It is just unbelievable that 1) someone would consider hosting their website
where they do not have telnet access, 2) that a hosting company still operates
this way.
Websites are on computers. Computers are more than just houses for
commercial software programs.
I know the webmaster at an ISP where I worked wrote a nice C email program
that used a config file to set values. Trying to explain that to people turned into
too much trouble so he just took away any options. But he had the script
available for anyone to use.
I started on the web at concentric.net. I paid US$10 a month for 10 meg of
space. My website is still there; they never took it down (it has been there for
about 2-3 years now). They had an excellent webmaster there. He must have
been sysadmn at a university. He had all sorts of cgi scripts we could use
(even to create a bulletin board) and he wrote rather extensive instruction
pages. I can still remember wondering how he did it all. But even then I spent
at least 3-4 hours tyring to understand what he was saying in his instruction
pages.
Jack, that cc in the email is just plain jain sent via email. The customer then
does with it what he wants. I have seen many instances where people use SSI
but then store the credit card on the server in either database or flat file. That
is just as bad if not worse than just sending it via email. But neither situation is
best.
