Something to consider, when evaluating PHP, is that it has it's own syntax,
based on Perl, C and Java. It will not allow you to use all the groovy Perl
modules out there. For those reasons I stopped using it around a year and a
half ago and switched to straight Perl w/modules.
There are other "embedded Perl" parsers out there that work similar to PHP,
but allow you to use the Perl syntax that you may know already (if you
don't, you may want to spend the time learning Perl instead of PHP because
the knowledge will apply more often down the road). One that I've read up
on, but have not used is ePerl:

it's free, it's GNU. It uses the Perl interpreter that you have installed
already, so if you're using Perl 5.004 (or whatever version) it'll work with
that.
