They found that anything they did to the employee directory, for example,
updated every page necessary on the site since it is template/database
driven. They could also print off internal directories, residence
directories, post HR info, all sorts of stuff they were entering in each
WordPerfect document...over and over and over...you get the idea.
It was primarily an expense and admin time issue. They also realized that
by updating things like Personnel Manuals on the intranet saved $$$$$$$ in
printing and distribution costs to 150 employees. If someone needs
soemthing, they either look it up, or download a printable version
themselves.
Mind you it was a long process to convince them of the utility....
And for several non-profit sites I work on, we do exactly the same thing,
just as you eluded to with the Paul salesguy example.

And...it's an easy task to extend the usage from the intranet to the
internet. Pete in sales can pull stuff up on his laptop when he's on the
road in Timbuktu. Would you mind detailing the reasons that accounting and
HR saw fit to abandon the old methods? I could put forth a guess, but I'm
curious of what you saw happen.
