Many thanks to all of you who so quickly answered my request for
suggestions on setting up our 486. Please keep those great replies coming!

I should have mentioned that I've used Homesite on a client's PC for a week
or so and really liked it, and since I'm also interested in learning about
ColdFusion, it makes sense to go with the Allaire products. And yes, I do
currently do my HTML in BBEdit on a Mac. But I've noticed subtle
differences in things like spacing on PCs and would like to be able to make
my adjustments right on the PC instead of looking at it on the PC, then
fixing it on the Mac, then carrying it back over to the PC to see if it
worked right.

I also already have an extra monitor set up on my Mac with 256 colors, PC
gamma and 640x480 resolution. I'm able to fairly closely match PC gamma
already. Part of my reason for wanting the PC is psychological: my
husband/partner Dave doesn't really take me seriously when I tell him how
much difference there is, or when I show him the difference with my
GammaToggle setup. Since he often does a lot of the Photoshop work for our
web designs, I have to waste a lot of time tweaking gamma on his files and
trying to guess at what he was aiming at on the Mac so that I can duplicate
it with PC gamma. With a PC on hand to prove my point, it should be easier
to get him to start adjusting for PC gamma as he creates his files.

Also, since Dave wants to get more into 3D work it makes sense for him to
eventually have a smokin' 3D workstation since most commercial 3D work is
done with PC-only programs. The 486 loaner will enable us to save enough
money to buy a really hot PC instead of buying something less capable to
just to meet our immediate needs. We will continue to use our Macs for
print work, but 3D and Web design work is forcing us to somewhat
unwillingly expand our capabilities beyond the Mac platform.
