Apparently, if your site visitors have Real Audio Player 3.0, you can offer
Real Audio files on a site even if the web host is not running the Real
Audio Server BUT only a few people will be able to stream a particular file
at one time. Here is what the hosting service I normally use told me:
------------------------------------
Although we do not have the Real Audio server software, we currently
support the .ra and .ram MIME extensions. RealAudio 3.0 supports what is
called HTTP Pseudo-streaming. Those who need entry-level streaming of small
audio files or limited concurrent listening will be able to post RealAudio
files to any HTTP Server for real-time playback. This feature is included
as an option with the RealAudio 3.0 Encoder, available from the RealAudio
Website.
--------------------------------------
Now, the site my prospective client wants is very unlikely to attract a lot
of traffic initially. And we plan to offer about 30 different audio clips
to listen to. So it is unlikely that more than a few people would want to
listen to the same clip at the same time. In this situation, it seems that
I could offer .ra files without the Real Audio server. Of course, I will
have to inform site visitors that they must have Real Audio Player 3.0. But
I do not think that is too much to ask, and as Suzanne mentioned many web
audio enthusiasts are likely to have the latest free Real Audio Player in
any case.
Plus, I will offer either .wav or .mp audio files as an alternative. What
would be a low cost software application for a Mac that would let me create
.mp files?
