Although it will be changing shortly, Canada has had localized domain names
for some time. A local company would get 'company.city.prov.ca' as a domain
name. The problem with that is that your company now looks like a small fish
in a big pond and people end up getting .com domains or go through hoops to
get company.ca to get around it.
I think that local search engines are the best way to get around the problem
of finding a local supplier. We run one such engine, and there are many
others out there. If you want to find Bob's Garage you shouldn't be using
the Yahoos or Altavistas but local directories.
