"Designed and engineered?" You mean that there's structure in the
network protocols or namespace database that makes it necessary or
desirable that there be a one-to-one correspondence between domain
names and corporate identity? So General Motors gets one domain and
my one-person company also gets one?

How do you define "organization" such that they are discrete? Is a
wholly-owned subsidiary under the domain of its owner, or does it
get its own? What if it's owned jointly and equally by two
companies? Should UCLA, UCSD, UC Berkeley, etc all come under the
University of California domain? Should it in turn be under the
CA State Government domain? Is the Navy Research Lab nrl.gov,
nrl.navy.gov, nrl.dod.gov, nrl.navy.dod.ExecutiveBranch.gov?
Who's going to tell the Marines?

What, we're going to run out of namespace? Let's see, how many
different 20-character strings are there? Having the naming be
"wide and flat" rather than "deep" doesn't make storage space
or search time worse; you can always divide the long names into
substrings and pretend there are periods between them.

Be they flat or deep, I don't think that domain names are going
to stay visible to most net users for long; they just aren't very
usable. Multi-criteria searching will make it as unnecessary for
us to see a domain name as it is to see numeric net addresses.
