If you're not talking a very large number of subscribers, you may find that
Pegasus will do the job for you.
It has a number of mailing-list-like features built in. Notably, its fairly
sophisticated filtering capabilities mean that you can issue auto-replies to
letters sent to a given address, and/or which contain specified strings in
the header or body. You can also add the senders of such letters to a
specified "distribution list" automatically. You can thereafter send bulk
mailings to all members of a given list.
Thus if you had a specific address for subscribing, you could set up rules
saying "If the TO: field equals '[EMAIL PROTECTED]', and the subject reads
'subscribe', then send such-and-such a confirmation letter, and add the
user to the 'Blah Subscribers' list."
A similar process would be used for unsubscribes.
E-mail me if you want more information.
