Hello,
I know that many of you are programmers, so I'm asking your advice.
The oddest thing happened to me. I was sitting here teaching myself to
program in Visual Basic via a couple of ZDU courses, minding my own
business. Suddenly the phone rang and a business owner with whom I have
contracted many times for web work, and who therefore knows my work ethic,
offered me a full-time job as a programmer. Well! I was shocked, as you
can imagine. I, a former mental health administrator turned web developer
turned VB student, am offered a job before I've even mastered
multi-dimensional arrays.
The job offered is not in VB programming, but rather in a proprietary
language which I would have to learn and then fly half-way across the
country to certify in.
Naturally, I'm interested but. . . .
Do any of you in-the-know have any recommendations to make with regard to
whether it's ever smart to learn a new language that isn't widely used? I
already know it would depend on the company, but putting all my eggs in one
basket makes me nervous. I would want to continue to learn VB.
Also, I've searched the engines and can't find a decent site to tell me what
salary I should request. I know there are salary surveys posted everywhere,
but none of the ones I've found directly address entry-level programmers. I
live an hour outside St. Paul, MN, on the WI side. If anyone has any URLs
to point me to, I'd appreciate it. I assume this latter question is not in
violation of list rules; if it is, please disregard it.
TIA,
Linda Wishman
