How about putting up a couple of basic page layouts with
backgrounds and colours and stuff and then getting them to look at
it using different browsers, different window sizes, different
monitors, different res and colour setups etc.

We do a lot of work for online publications, and getting it through to
managerial staff that they don't have pixel by point by pica control
over what the page looks like is a major part of any briefing.
(Doesn't help having clients halfway around the world from us who
use Netscape 2.0... :-)

It might not necessarily be appropriate for whatever line of business
your guys are in, but at least it will give them an appreciation of
how fluid this medium is in even the most basic things...and of the
amount of time (and money) that can be taken up getting the "look"
right or making those apparently vital tweaks ("can you just make
those boxes a bit bluer and line them up..." aaarrgghhh!)

Good luck, though I still reckon you should tell them that this is the
equivalent of teaching them how to write "this is a pen" in
shorthand...

Cheers,
Vicki Hyde
