no.. i would not.
more specifically, i refuse to use any form of navigation on a page
which is not also accessible through text links on the same page.
navigation is a usability feature, not a design feature. i do not
accept any solution in which usability is compromised for the sake of
looks or flash.
when i was living in CorporateLand last year, one of my
responsibilities was to interview candidates for technical positions.
one of my favorite tricks was to swing my monitor around and ask the
candidates for webmaster to take me to their demo site. me being a
geek-luddite, my standard browser settings are no Java, no Javascript,
and no automatic image loading.
since i'm also a rank bastard, i never bothered to mention that fact.
i saw countless pages which were completely blank except for a few
ALT-free image icons; i saw more than one page where all the spiffy Java
rollover links showed up as nothing but empty grey boxes. usually,
there was no other way to get from page to page.
i also saw a whole bunch of blank expressions, which told me that the
person in question had never stopped to think about the page being
viewed under any conditions but the ones on their machine at home.
my personal suggestion would be to shut off Java in your web browser,
and ask the client to take you to the page which has the spiffy wotsit
they like so much. from what you've described, i'd imagine the
experience of seeing the magic fail to work would have more impact
than a list of facts and figures.
