of course, one can only estimate the percentage, but the basis for the
statement can stillbe valid.

This client attitude is common. I work very hard to educate clients about
these issues so I don't waste my time. I know, it's tough to tell people
what they don't want to hear! But it's worth the effort. (I"m not saying
you didn't try!)

I think it is going to vary a lot depending on the web site target
audience. If it is a general interest site, then it is going to draw a lot
of visitors with old browsers and low-power systems, and using java would
be a major mistake.
If it's a site that is going to attract a "geekier" audience of gear-heads
than you might consider it. But I can tell you that I've met many a geek
who turns java off because it drives them nuts.
I don't have any numbers, and I doubt anyone has good numbers. But it's
still an issue.
