I had a relative of a client who had a beautiful graphics page!
(Actually, several gorgeous pages to form a mini-site made by his nephew,
I think it was.) But he wasn't getting many hits. In fact, his domain name
was not showing up on searches for his domain name! (We found a few
dealers of his, but not him.) Each page was one .gif file, hardly
anything in terms of meta tags, and despite paying for one of those
submissions services, none were indexed under any of the terms. I forget
if it was five or seven minutes of downloading the main page before I gave
up.
His uncle wanted me to review the site and see if we could do
anything to improve it. Finally got his pages from his uncle on a floppy;
because the nephew changed sites due to the lack of hits, and, um... the
old site went down before the new one became available. (I forget if that
was one of those we extracted from his browser cache, or if it was some
earlier site the fellow had.)
We gave his uncle a better set of pages that said more, got more
relevant hits, etc. for the same product. Didn't look nearly as nice,
though... But it DID look a lot more functional, and the pages were in
the search engines for a lot of relevant keywords.
