Speaking for my own UG, one reason to that is that it's not as fun to maintain. Currently, the interface to OS.o is clunky, and not always very responsive (it's far away). And people in UG are smart enough to get their own server running. > Another thing that worries if both exist is they will be perceived in > contrast to each other possibly causing a chronic misconception > problem. Whether that feeling would be right or wrong, it would exist, regardless there is a contrast to the .com website. IMO, the .COM extension has been strongly associated in the public's mind as standing for "commercial", as in "making money out of stuff" (and those who were putting dots in .coms everywhere are partly responsible for that perception ;-) I would myself feel uneasy about switching to a .com website. And (I'm stretching things a bit here, I know) my employer, which is a competitor to Sun, might question it as well. It wouldn't sound "non-profit" anymore, like .org does. > This wouldn't happen -- IMO -- if an opensolaris.com site existed > without an opensolaris.org site standing in contrast to it. I agree that confusion is possible, but then, what about solaris.com? Aren't people going to be confused between that and opensolaris.com, too? I'd love to see a serious redesign of the website, also to ease the maintenance of the localized portals, before switching to a new TLD.
