So we should only demand change when there is no risk involved? No recourse for nonviolent civil disobedience? Heaven forfend I actually risk a fine or a night in jail in order to stand up for something I believe in. Freedom ain't cheap. > I think this would make students think they can shut down > any school for any reason if they get enough students to agree with > it. I didn't say any reason. They are protesting who was selected as head of the college, not something frivolous like making the cafeteria entirely vegan. I'd be in agreement with you if the students were shutting down a school via protest if what was being protested was frivolous. > Also I do think it is affecting their reputation and parents > might not send their children there next year if there is this much > unrest on campus. UMD saw enrollment increase after the tradition of rioting after games started. Also, it's not the student's responsibility to care about the "reputation" of the school. If anything, I'd say the protests might improve the school's image depending on how this is all resolved. > Again I think it is a means justifying the ends > thing. Welcome to the real world. Ommelettes get made all the time. > Also I think the protesters need to be on the same page so it > doesn't look like everyone is protesting something different and they > don't have a unified agenda. Yeah, good luck with that. I agree with you in theory, but not in practice. By that standard, no mass protests of any kind will be possible. I was on the Mall during the anti-war protests right before the Iraq war started and the groups that were handed the mike to address the throngs often strayed off-topic. I was half expecting to hear from the Paraplegic Albino Lesbian Plumbers and how the way the Bush administration was handling the situation was analagous to how they get shafted by "The Man" everyday. insert fatuous quote here __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
