"We are simply giving people grants that they can use to do *whatever
they want* with the only stipulation being that it is Wesnoth-related."

This is still hiring people. I called it contract work and you call it grant. I will use the word grant from now on. You're saying that you need the grant receiver to set the goals and milestones for their work because you don't want guide them. That's a fine thing to do. Any grant receiver that you hire should ideally be able to work independently because you don't want to create MORE work for yourself by hiring someone.

Your trying to get a paid developer to work in an open source fashion. *THIS IS GREAT.* The grant receiver is being paid, they will have plenty of time to make milestones for themselves and organize and create the work how they think best. However, this does not mean you have to exclude people in the process. In fact, what this says is that one of the duties you should encourage from a grant receiver is to mentor other programmers.

Greg, you have clearly *NOT* understood Dave's intention. Yes, he talks about a
grant for proven members. This is intentional.

The "attract women into the project" part is *DIFFERENT* from this.

Cheers,
Nils Kneuper aka Ivanovic

I beg to differ. Including women in the project is not different from how you hire and grant developers. Rather excluding women is exactly what you will do if you don't tell people your hiring developers and select candidates from those already on this list. If you want to grant talented developers to do productive work on the project, you should hire openly, fairly, and with equal opportunity. You also have a great opportunity to create change here. You have a chance to break down the traditional barriers to open-source programming to bring in involvement from people who aren't normally able to participate.

This is a great opportunity for Wesnoth to be a leader in open source. How you go about hiring people and dealing with profit will say a lot about how open source works.
