Jeff:

Note that there was no software development kit for WhatsUp Gold, but there
were APIs. It was not easy to create plug-ins or to easily extend the system,
but people did anyway. Cemtek's SMS support, Denika from Somix and Netbots
are great examples. Also go check out the new PDA View product from Hurd/IT,
it's way cool.

WhatsUp Professional focuses on Scalability, Extensibility and Usability. The
database, IIS and the SDK are all extensibility items and will enable for
growth of the system by third parties and power users. Maybe I'll toss
together a quick CLI plug-in and drop it on the forum sometime after we
release, just to get the ball rolling...

We will be adding support to the SDK over time as well, including that for
VB.Net and C# which will open the product to a broader range of developers.

Cheers!

Well I have been asking for this on the mailing list for a year now. I know I
have not been the only one asking for it. I would think that if it was so
easy to create one of these plug-ins that someone would of done it already.
However every time it comes up on the list no body can work with C++ to get
any type of plug-in to work.

That's a great idea for a plug-in Jeff, a little too late to get it in for the
9th though.

The intention of the SDK is for ISV's et al to improve and extend the product
by writing add-ons. The hope is that the tool and the new open architecture
will help establish a community that will build and share [or sell] support
for things that Ipswitch as a company either cannot do or doesn't have the
time or resource to do.

I like the idea of the CLI monitor and can imagine that someone out there
would be able to generate an appropriate plug-in pretty quickly. There are
nearly 100,000 of you out there, all fine and loyal WhatsUp folks. I'm sure
that a few are programmers and would be willing to build a monitor--there's a
pretty compelling shareware business case for it and the SDK is certainly an
enabler for that.

Cheers!

I think the scripting Andr was talking about is the option to use a batch
file to poll a device.

Most of us have been asking for that for years now. You made reference to
being able to do it is the new version. Now it looks like we need to purchase
the SDK for $2500 and still need to be able to write C++ code. If we knew how
to do that we would have done it long ago. So to me it looks like you have
made no changes to this feature except add a large fee to use something that
we mostly can't use.

A lot of us have programs that we can run to test items. These programs allow
us to run them with command line options. It would be very nice to have WUP
give us the ability to run a windows command/batch file and test the return of
it like we do with the TCP monitor.

I know that writing in C++ is better, but you need to be a programmer. None
of the users of WUG are programmers! We are system/network admins. We know
how to write batch files and other scripting languages, because that is what
helps us get our work done.

I love the fact WUP will use a database and a real web server with all of the
scripting languages supported by IIS. You did give us a lot. However it
would be very very nice to be able to have a monitor use the output for a
command line as it's test. If you don't want to allow for an expect statement
like the tcp monitor, then just give a value we have to return at the command
line for a good test. So for example, if the command returns anything but
WhatsUpIsGood, then call the monitor down.

I have one simple question for the users of Whatsup Gold. Are there any
programmers out there that know how to write C++? I could be wrong, but I
think that question will prove the point that the users can't write their own
monitors like you keep suggesting.

Hi there,

Perhaps this will help. WhatsUp Professional will ship with an IIS compatible
web server and enables the scripting languages normally available there. You
can leverage that system to do all kinds of stuff including integrations etc.

The SDK is more focused on lower level things such as writing actions for new
hardware devices, manipulating other things at a low level in response to
alerts, or talking to/monitoring devices that are outside of the normal type
that WhatsUp understands--mesh networks or MRI systems for example.

Cheers!

Honestly, I'm a little bit disappointed about the SDK. Because one of the
point that I was hoping to have in WUP was to be able to create script and
stuff like that to integrate into WUP, but we'll have to pay 2 500 USD to have
that option. I don't know who can pay that price to be able to customize but
we couldn't for sure.

That was my point, thank you.

***SPAM*** RE: [WhatsUp Forum] WhatsUp Professional Pricing

Hi Everyone,

The pricing and upgrade paths are as I listed it below in the message below.

WhatsUp Professional is our next generation network management platform and is
the replacement for the venerable WhatsUp Gold. It's extremely scalable and
extensible and you can expect to see lots of activity surrounding it. The
base WhatsUp Professional will always be available, but you can expect to see
lots of activity in the add-on and bundle space as we and third parties extend
the system into new areas.

Lots of you are interested in the new features that WhatsUp Professional
brings to bear so I thought I'd roll out a quick list to whet your appetites:

Central Device List - System management is based on a list of devices rather
than a map containing devices as was the case with WhatsUp Gold. This
improves performance and efficiency by removing redundant polls and allows the
system to scale linearly.

Visualization - Device list management is done using an Explorer like
interface which allows the use of folders. Each folder may be a subnet or
contain any arbitrary device collection you may need. Maps are graphical
views of folders and you may lay out devices on maps in any way you desire.
Reports too are views onto folders allowing you to quickly view key data for
specific device collections.

Effective Reports - HTML is the vehicle for delivering all reports and the
reports themselves are focused on key areas including health, availability and
performance. They are bold, colorful and meaningful and are meant to address
the key needs of the busy administrator.

Configuration Wizards - Device configuration is managed through simple and
effective wizards that reduce the time and effort needed for the task. In a
single, linear flow devices can be configured for monitors, actions, policies,
intervals etc, without the need to leave the wizard.

SSL and LDAP Support - Web authentication is managed either through the
systems internal user management system or against an LDAP or Active Directory
server. Connections are protected using 128bit SSL as well.

SQL Server - All Data including device, configuration, statistics and logs are
stored in a SQL database. The database is open and may be used for reporting
activities by third party tools or leveraged in other ways depending on need.
The system ships with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Edition (MSDE) and may
be configured to run against Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise as well. We
will be adding support for additional databases in time.

There will also be a C++ software developers kit available for Visual Studio
2003 that includes everything you need to construct custom monitors and
actions, launch discovery, leverage the database and otherwise extend the
system. The target users of the SDK are manufacturers and ISV's that want to
add support for their devices/systems, and technical IT folks that need to
customize alerts, user interfaces or integrate the system with other
management tools. The pricing for the SDK is $2495.00 and includes a WhatsUp
Professional license. Service agreement renewals will be available for
$595.00 annually.

Cheers!

Pete is this product going to get rolled into a product that will cost a
fortune like you guys are doing with the Imail product. If so I will not be
upgrading and wasting my money. What good is an SA that will not cover a new
release? Is there any chance of WhatsUp getting canned in the next year, to be
replaced by a new wider range product? Please reply Thanks Allen

Importance: High

Hi Gang,

I realize there are some questions regarding WhatsUp Professional pricing and
upgrade path. Here are the details:

Retail Price:............................................ $1495.00 Service
Agreement Renewal................................ $395.00 Gold to Professional
Upgrade/SA Holders:................. $0.00 Gold to Professional Upgrade/Non-SA
Holders:............. $995.00

For those of you who do not have a current service agreement, the WhatsUp Gold
service agreement may be purchased for $395.00 any time prior to the release
of WhatsUp Professional, which is currently scheduled for 9-Nov-2004. It's a
great way to save a couple of bucks.

Cheers!

Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] Concern over WhatsUP Pro

After the recent release of Ipswitch Collaboration Suite and how they messed
up the way it is marketed (You must buy things in a package not as individual
pieces and having a software contract means nothing you must repurchase) I am
concerned they may try to do the same thing with WhatsUp Pro. Can any one
reassure me that this is not the case, that we will be granted the upgrade to
Pro if we have a service contract?

I don't think I can stomach another $6000 surprise like I had with Imail.

Tim
