Hi Declan, Our best wishes for the holidays!
I think we need the collaborative development of deletion guidelines for administrators under our Policy for Community Workgroups (see: http://wikieducator.org/Workgroup:WikiEducator_Workgroups/Guidelines) where we collectively define the policy for deleting pages. It's a difficult balance -- while the majority of page deletion requests for pages created by a single author are requested by another editor, I think we should also acknowledge a healthy dose of good faith. For example, where it is clear that the page is abandoned (eg no edits over a period of time) or that the page was a mistake (e.g typo in the page name) it's easy enough to delete without infringing on the freedoms of the original creator. Afterall -- a page with no or little content, can easily be created again and/or administrators can easily reinstate a deleted page in the wiki. I think the notion of a sub-template is more of a fix for the symptom than the cause ;-). Anil, one of our Community Council members launched an impressive project to develop guidelines for administrators in late in 2009. See: http://wikieducator.org/Workgroup:WikiEducator_Administrators. To be fair, this was a large task and community participation in completing this task was disappointing --- perhaps suggesting that the need was premature or that workgroup members did not have the time to donate to this workgroup. Bottom line -- we need a few dedicated WikiEducators to spend quality time on getting this right. We have advantage of your innovations to trial the template during the experimental period. I see a few gaps of opportunities for improvement: - Improving the template to make it easier to specify the reasons for the request for deletion, and perhaps automating and/or improving usability of page deletion requests for newbies. - Providing clear guidelines for admins when carrying out requests for page deletions - Incorporating how to delete pages in our training materials - Providing training support (and resources) for admins in monitoring and executing page deletion requests. Perhaps this is something we should add onto our new year resolution list? Other ideas and suggestions?
