Get your "tag number" and ask Dell Award Winning Technical Support
how to proceed... I "think" that is part of what you paid for...
A re-install of the CD's they gave you WITH THE UNIT, or programs
you purchased DIRECTLY FROM them should be "covered" by them
for what you want to do...
If you (first), use ANY OTHER tools not supplied by them, (destroying
theirs in the process, they will likely wash their hands of you, and with
"good cause"...
They have "some" way to do this... Is this covered in any manual they
might have given you? (Did you look?)
That is the "good news" and "bad news" of all this... You do it their way,
or you strike out "on your own"...
Unless you have brought up systems from "bare metal", I would be cautious...
Even more so if I could not "see" (or know) where my OS would be
"coming back" from... (A CD?, or a hidden partition?)
I would NOT just (zap) or format the drive unless you looked at it with
some good partitioning software and knew EXACTLY what was on it...
Some of these (large) OEMS have different "options" and way they,
(or you), can do this... Some are not all that obvious...
On another list recently, I tried to post a screen shot of a year old+ Dell
FACTORY partitioning scheme, (and it was not a pretty sight)...
(It was also "un-postable", just like here... Plus, I can't find that now.)
Let the list know how well DELL treats you.
As always, be sure you get out any and ALL data you want.
This is rarely covered (and or saved/protected) when they "fix" your
machine by making it (like) brand new, and "clean as a whistle"...
(Read that as -- they clean out ALL the garbage, including anything of yours...)

When I opened the message, I found that Carl Houseman had written:

I have come to that conclusion.
However, since most of the programs were already on my laptop when it
came from Dell, it isn't exactly clear which CDs are for what.
"One says Drivers, Utilities and Applications"
"For Reinstalling Dell (tm) Inspiron(tm) 1100 and 5100 System
Software"
"The software is already installed on your conputer. Us this CD to
reinstall the software".
Now, my question is: If I format the HD, the software won't "already"
be on my system <smile>.
It doesn't say anything about the OS.
How should I proceed?
