Subject: Re: Infrequent and Irregular Windows Lockups

I find that if a system gets blown out every 6 to 12 mo then the fans generally last 2 to 3 yrs but what I hate is when the clients let the machines get so hot that you could fry an egg on the case before they

I sell a simple fifty dollar AGP 128 MB video card for my low end computers and a simple eighty dollar PCI-e 128 MB video card for my Pentium 4 computers. Currently neither have fans, just heatsinks. Due to the difficulty in servicing the warranty, I have my customers who want high end video cards purchase them locally and bring them to me.

I report my findings and often my reports are taken out of context. I feel that cigarette smoke has stalled the few video card fans I have found messed up. I find that only about 10% of smokers smoke so regularly or so close to their computer that it ruins the computer. For the other 90% of computers where there is evidence of cigarette smoke, there is no obvious damage done. Simply put, the whole insides are not gunked up and a coating of nicotine on the outside.

Since there is such an always changing variety of video card fans, I make no attempts to stock them. I still have a stockpile of CPU fans from the days Pentium II CPU's were in slots, not sockets. I guess if a high end video card needed to be sent back while under warranty I could loan my customer a video card to get by until it came back to them. The video cards I recommended that the customers throw away appeared to be at least 2 years old and low end cards and gunked up with smoke residue.

I got impatient and went ahead and installed all new memory in my computer, all from the same batch. I hope it solves my Windows lockup problems. If not, at least I know it is not the memory. If it continues or gets worse, I will eventually replace my motherboard.

Thanks for all the advice,

Chuck
