Subject: POP3 Problem
A neighbor's Dell computer with XP Home exhibits very strange behavior
with both Outlook Express and the latest Thunderbird. She cannot connect
to the POP3 server at Verizon. "Socket error 10060"
I found that this error occurs when you are using an SMTP server that
your ISP blocks. However, she's using outgoing.verizon.net.
I ran VZ's "PC Check" program and it reported that OE was using port 995
instead of 110.
I checked that in OE and in TB and found that both were configured for
110, no SSL or other secure protocols.
She's using Windows firewall and I reset it to the default settings.
I set up her account on my computer and it works fine.
What could be causing the problem?
Socket error 10060 literally means the connection attempt timed out.
Generally it is received when attempting to connect to an outside SMTP
server to send mail and your ISP blocks any SMTP connections other than
their own. You state that she's using outgoing.verizon.net but you don't
say that Verizon is her ISP, is it? If it is, is the correct SMTP server
to use for Verizon DSL is outgoing.verizon.net. (Check the spelling to
make sure it's correct.) Also, on the Servers tab for the account the
Outgoing Mail Server option "My server requires authentication" should be
checked.
The port 995 has nothing to do with SMTP nor the socket error 10060. Port
995 is the SSL port used for POP3 connections for downloading mail. Can
she download mail? If not, what is the pop server set to? (Verizon DSL
states it should be incoming.verizon.net). You said that you checked OE
and it was using port 110. I assume you checked this on the Advanced tab
in the properties for the account? The pop server should be set to use
port 110 and the smtp server should be using port 25.

Another thing to check, Pete, is whether she is properly setup on the ISP's
site. They may require that their email accounts are set up there as well as
on the PC. Those kind of errors could easily result. Comcast works that way
and it is a pain.
