I ran into the same problem when I upgraded to XP, which did not support the
Diamond FirePort 40 SCSI-2 Adapter. They had gotten "out of the business"
and left it an orphan. I was running a CDRW and CDROM off the SCSI adapter
and found it cheaper to just upgrade to the cheaper IDE versions.

I easily meet the minimum requirement, but we all know MS is a bit
conservative on their "minimums."

There is always some faster and better, isn't there. I am a little luckier
than you as I purchased my socket 939 with PCI-e (not SLI) and SATA2. I
always feel bad with partial upgrades because it leave me with unused
components.

I only support myself. More important for me is file compatibility with my
customers. One customer just began upgrading their employees to Office 2003
(and they just upgraded from Windows 2000 to XP about 2 years ago), so I
have lots of time in that respect to implement Vista and the new office
suite on my own system.

As you stated, Windows XP/SP2 does everything I need at this time. I am sure
I will upgrade, but the software incompatibilities alone have me thinking
twice. That can vastly increase the cost to switch to the new operating
system. I am also waiting for software that makes better use of the dual
core capabilities of the hardware.

Besides, if I wait to upgrade my hardware, something newer, faster and
better is sure to come along. It always does!
