Hi Paul and others,
Thanks for asking about the Great River Shakespeare Festival. I serve
on the board of directors, and yes, we have had many discussions about other
successful communities like Stratford, Ontario, Cedar City, Utah and
Ashland, Oregon that host summer Shakespeare events. Some of us have even
discussed a trip to those locales to study their venues, marketing
strategies, community involvement, and more.
We are well on the way to building a Shakespeare event of national
distinction, and this is an exceptionally exciting time for Winona! An
excellent producing director named Mark Hauck has been hired to spearhead
the festival process with us. As a professional actor, arts administrator
and set designer, Mark brings a vast network of national theater contacts
and knowledge. Shakespeare lovers in the Winona environs will be pleased to
know that auditions are going on now for the finest actors and staff crew in
NY and LA.
Besides the tremendous infusion of arts, literature, theater workshops,
local school apprenticeships and cultural/educational opportunities for
Winona area people, we expect a tremendous economic boom from the Festival.
Using the most conservative studies of the economics of cultural tourism, it
is reasonable to predict that the Great River Shakespeare Festival will
exceed $9 million annually within the next ten years. As the Festival
grows, new entrepreneurial businesses will be attracted along with the
workforce needed to fill new positions in the motel/hotel industry,
restaurants, entertainment, healthcare, retail, and so on.
If you are interested in helping with Festival educational programs,
theater volunteers, fundraising, marketing or collateral special events, let
me know!
