The Masonic Temple would be nice, but let's not forget that there is still an effort to save the old Middle School Auditorium and convert it into a community arts space. This effort was in limbo for a while, while the County Court occupied the Old Middle School and Metro Plaines had to delay construction. Now that Metro Plaines has started up on construction, they have began working with the "Friends of the Old Middle School" again to try and make that vision a reality. Having been involved with the startup of this effort, I can say that it is a vision that resonates with many in the community. Many people in the community attended the old middle school and have strong cultural and historical ties to it. There is also a good (and diverse) core group of people involved in the effort. Anyone interested in helping may want to contact Vicki Wicka at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also, the vision for the Grand Excursion includes a possible floating stage on the Mississippi where audiences could watch shows from the levy -- including Winona's new annual Shakespeare festival starting next summer. That would be a great (and unique) venue for many things if it becomes permanent. The Shakespeare festival could also provide a good foundation to build a broader tourism effort around. Finally, Winona already does have an "arts coop" of sorts. It is the pottery studios on west 5th st. I'm not sure exactly how it is structured, but several artists work and display their art there.
