Depends on what you mean by lifeline? If you are doing a controlled decend (repel) you should be using 1/2" Kernmantle at a minimum. We use 5/8". In addition you are required to have a 5/8" rope grab line (usually polyester/polypropelene mix) as a "just in case"
When buying Kernmantle look for rope that is a name brand, made in the USA and preferably meets NFPA standards. Do not buy any rope made in China for life safety.
