I would be very much interested to hear if anyone has come up with reasonable
alternatives to them that provide similar features.

I have tried this one and it always times out getting tiles.  Are you sure it
works?

Does mapquest terms of service allow use in Xastir?  If you'll check that out
and verify that it is so, then please provide the .geo and I can add it to the
code base.  But if it's against the terms of service, we can't do it.
