Use the kernel image  (uImage) in the zip file.  Put it in the .kobo/upgrade 
directory along to Max's KoboRoot.tgz and then reboot.  You should end up with 
a USB host enabled device.

Be aware that this kernel doesn't support device mode!  (It also may not 
support WiFi, though I haven't tested that)

It does however allow a PL2303 serial adapter to be connected to the Kobo.  
I've done plenty of flying with it connected to a Volkslogger and a 12to5V 
converter to power both the serial converter and the Kobo.  The same cabling 
that works with the Nook will work with the Kobo.

The startup scripts that went along with it mounted any SD card/USB key and 
copied profile info etc off it onto the kobo.  I wouldn't expect that to be the 
case with the official KoboRoot.tgz.  (I'm way out of date due to too much 
work)  The new software is FAR superior to the old rough draft!
