OK. First, lets check which version of YM 9 that you have. On the YM
window, click Help Menu, then About YM and let us know which version. Also,
double check that you are entering the correct Yahoo ID and Password.
Delete what might be showing up when you open YM and manually type in the
working ID and password. If this doesn't work, proceed...

Next, I'm going to presume that you used the so-called "official" download
website from Yahoo in order to download YM... correct? That could be part
of your problem. Over the years, the majority of the problems that I've
seen with YM installs that do not want to work right are due to folks using
the Yahoo Installer version rather than a FULL version download of YM. I
wrote an article about "How I ALWAYS Do A Clean Install Of Yahoo Messenger"
on my blog which gives more info and instructions. If all else fails,
follow those instructions... but try the next couple of steps first.

yahoo.html

Next, while it's NEVER a good idea to run a computer without a firewall, for
testing purposes, close all other programs/applications that might want to
connect to the internet and then turn off the Windows Firewall and try
signing in on YM, just to make sure it's not a Windows Firewall issue. I'll
be honest and say I know almost nothing about configuring the Windows
Firewall since it's not any good anyhow so I've never used it. I've used
almost all of the other FREE and MUCH BETTER firewalls out there and
presently, I am using and encouraging the Comodo Internet Security Suite
which is FREE and includes the award winning Comodo Pro Firewall, as well as
their anti-virus and Proactive Defense (anti-malware) features, all in one
interface... and it's FREE. There are several other FREE 3rd party firewalls
that are also MUCH BETTER than the Windows Firewall.

OK.. back to your issue. Once you've turned off the Windows Firewall, try
signing in. Did it work? If not, go to the main Messenger Menu, then
Connection Preferences and let us know what that says. That usually isn't a
problem as YM will work even if the Connection Preferences are not what they
should be but sometimes, making a change will fix a connection problem.

Next, go to your computer's Security Center (Start Menu>Control
Panel>Security Center) and lets make sure you do not have two firewalls
running. Maybe IT installed a better firewall and didn't turn off the
Windows Firewall.

If not that, then you may want to go back to my article and follow those
steps to do a GOOD and FULL install instead of the Yahoo Installer Version.
Over the years, the majority of the problems that I've seen with non-working
or problematic installs of YM were done via the Yahoo Installer Version and
once a FULL Version install was done, the problems were fixed.

Subject: [Y!M] Trouble installing version 9 on an XP machine

Hi,

I just received a new XP machine here at work. It's not brand new, but was
wiped by our IT group and then setup for me.

I've downloaded the current version (9) from the yahoo web site and
installed. When attempting to login, I receive the error "Sign-in Problem"
Please click "Try Again" to re-enter your ID and Password. If you have
forgotten your ID or Password, click "Sign-In" problems?".

I have uninstalled IM and reinstalled. I can log into my.yahoo and groups
successfully with this ID and password. I checked the XP firewall settings
and Yahoo Messenger is enabled. I'm not sure what else to check.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Todd
