Granny,

Your friends are stored on Yahoo Servers, not on your computer, which is why
you can sign into YM on your computer, on a work computer or use Web
Messenger and all of your friends still show up.

As far as your message archives, they are stored on your computer at this
location:
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Profiles\YourYahooID\Archive and you will
see two folders, Conferences and Messages, which contain all of your
archived chat sessions. Make a copy of your entire profile folder or just
the archive folder. Then do your uninstall, cleanup and reinstall. See my
article for details:

When you click "sign in" does it give you the "try again" message
immediately, or is there a long delay?
An immediate response could be a mismatch of ID's, but if it's a long delay,
I'm having that same problem - I either get signed in immediately with no
problem, or it hangs for 1 minute and then I get the "try again" message.
It's been a regular problem in the 2 weeks since installing 9.0.0.2162. I'm
on XP.
I emailed Y customer support and they replied that it is a known issue that
they are working on. They suggested that if I continue to have the problem
that I instead use messenger on the web - but that is not what I want to do
since that online version lacks features I use.

I was going to uninstall 9 and reinstall version 8, which always worked
fine, but when I went to do it I got a message that I first have to
uninstall 9. I am reluctant to do that if it means I will lose all my
contacts and cached message history.
I've asked customer support several times if I would lose the contacts and
history with an uninstall, but they have ignored that question. Does anyone
know what will happen, and if it would wipe the contacts and history is
there any way I can save them before uninstalling 9?

Also, for what it's worth, sometimes when I can't sign in I will completely
exit the program and then reload it from my start menu and it sometimes
works ok - but that may just be a coincidence since the problem comes and
goes.

Thanks,
Granny

Subject: [Y!M] Trouble installing version 9 on an XP machine

Hi,

I just received a new XP machine here at work. It's not brand new, but was
wiped by our IT group and then setup for me.

I've downloaded the current version (9) from the yahoo web site and
installed. When attempting to login, I receive the error "Sign-in Problem"
Please click "Try Again" to re-enter your ID and Password. If you have
forgotten your ID or Password, click "Sign-In" problems?".

I have uninstalled IM and reinstalled. I can log into my.yahoo and groups
successfully with this ID and password. I checked the XP firewall settings
and Yahoo Messenger is enabled. I'm not sure what else to check.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Todd
