Output of that command is -

quite a lot of stuff - I could do a screenie if it will help.
Basically lists fd0, hda,hdc loop0 to 7, md0 and several ram entries, 0 to 15.

I am going to pre-partition the virtual drive with another distro now - that 
should allow me to install Yoper with no problem, based on my earlier install 
with Y2.91.  Why exactly the installer cannot work with clean drives I am not 
sure - but I know others have reported this with real hard drives as well as 
the virtual variety.
