Michael,
Please take my name off your e-mail list i.e. [email protected]
I am not a subscribed member of your group and my name
was mysteriously placed into it so that I am receiving unsolicited e- mails
from its members. I have contacted Diane Ross about this to no avail.

Please do not include me in your e-mail correspondence.

Hello.

I am still having problems with getting Entourage for Mac 2008 working. The
message I get when trying to open is:

You do not have write access to the Entourage application folder. To run Entourage you must have the administrative user remove the Identities folder from the application folder. For more information, see the Entourage Read Me
File.

At suggestions on this list I have tried a few things:

* I tried to move the Microsoft User Data folder to the desktop. Rather than just moving it copied all 4 gigabytes. I did a repair of permissions via disk utilities program. This did not move the folder, however, just copied it. So
the suggestion to let the program create a new folder didn’t happen.
* Suggestion was made below to ‘fix permissions’. I am not sure what this means. I did check permissions as suggested and made sure that ‘read and write’ to my name as administrator was applied. However, it is true when I tried to make some change (I can’t remember what), I got the message that I
did not have sufficient privileges. I don’t know how to fix that.
* I did log into the program under a test user name. It seems to work fine there. At the suggestion below I did put the Office 2008 identities folder in shared and then tried to pull that, in the original user, into Microsoft User
Data Folder. However, the program is not letting me do that.

So I am not sure at this point what to do. Note that the program did NOT
create an Office 2008 Main Identities folder in Microsoft User Data.

I am able to use Word, Powerpoint, and Excel. However, each time I reopen one of these programs it tells me I have a problem with the database and that certain functions may not work. It tells me to go to Microsoft Database Utility, open this, and use it to rebuild the database. I found this. However,
when I click on the program nothing happens.

I hope someone can help me with this mess.

Thanks.

Michael

Michael, I received the following on the error message.

This message is in response to Erage having gotten an afpAccessDenied error (-5000) when trying to startup. Apple describes this as “Insufficient
access
privileges for operation.”

My assumption from looking at the code is that this message wording is in response to a specific and common miss-configuration problem probably from
a
some previous release. I doubt this user has that specific problem so the
wording doesn’t apply.

The user should make certain that he or she has read and write permissions
to
everything in the Microsoft User Data folder.

Try this first. Move the Microsoft User Data folder to the desktop. Let Entourage create a new one. Then check the permissions on the blank Main Identity folder that was created. Compare them to the Main Identity in the Microsoft User Data folder on the desktop. Fix permissions, then drag just
the fixed Main Identity back to the new folder.

You can bring over your scripts, but do not bring over the old Entourage X
and Entourage 2001 Identities. They are no longer needed.

If this doesn't work, create a new User in System Preferences and test Entourage in a new Identity. You can drag your Main Identity to Shared so
you can access it in the new User.

Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test Entourage in
the new User.
