The Dalai Lama had been invited to a Chinese event on March 11, 1959. He was
told to come alone. He knew full well he was being set up but he planned to
go to avoid trouble. The people of Llasa surrounded the palace and would
not let him attend. In order to protect his people, he decided to leave.

I think he has done more for Tibet by working outside the system then symply
making a martyre of himself. Now the world knows of Tibet's problems and
they didn't before.

Tibet was an independent nation not a province of China and Tibetans have
died by the thousands and the rest have been scattered across China in an
attempt to destroy the Tibetan culture. They can't practice Buddhism any
more thanks to the Chinese taking everything from them.
