Jim, OK, just understand that I did my best to tell you the worst.
I think one must, should, and CAN weigh the total good done, against any harm. Overall, the avoidance of starvation and disease in 6 or 7 offspring kittens can count more on the cosmic brownie-point-scale than fright given to the potential parent, and a sore pubis for 3 days or so. No one can convince you of that, and not everyone is capable of putting in the effort to borrow the "Hav-a-Heart" trap from the spay-clinic free of charge, nor in baiting it to capture the cat in question. It does take some directed effort! I don't say I've ever gotten good at it, but I have been doing it close to 50 years. I'll say frankly though, to emphasize: I think it is immoral to feed the starving females without having them neutered, first. Feeding them makes them fertile if they are not first spayed. In this matter, though, you will of course be the Judge, Your Honor. I think to get the cat's consent, just consult your conscience, and recall that we are all in this together.
