If a practitioner in our tradition cares to be sure that they are not deluding
THEMSELVES, and have truly awoken to Tathagata Zen, a teacher is needed to do
the testing.
I don't know about your "essential" (I use that word differently), but I'd say
necessary.
To do that latter step.
That testing.
