All of these very good observations. You are right,
Doug -- a raft is big and bulky and easy to discard,
without thinking twice. But what if it is some
seemingly non-intrusive device (even an implant, if we
want to push it to the nano-technology level)?

What I'm trying to establish here is that once you
break through to the other side, the devices that used
to serve you well while back in the previous world,
all of a sudden become a nuisance and a burden. But
I'm kind of having difficult time finding a suitable
analogy right now. Yes, a raft is a clunky one, so
we'll quite easily leave it behind.

Actually, not only must that device prove to be a
nuisance, it must prove to be an impossibility!
Because, as we know, we can learn to live with a
nuisance, almost any nuisance. All kinds of deviations
are quite possible. So what we need is a bullet-proof
impossibility.

Unfortunately, my brain is failing me right now. I
can't come up with a convincing simile. Something from
the everyday life, that would illustrate how, once we
get to a certain point, some things that we used to
find useful turn into an impossibility. Hmmmm...
(scratches his chin)

Can anyone help? I'm stuck here, and I'm hurtin'!

Alex
