After careful consideration, Gary Smith wrote:
Does anyone wonder why he gave such a testimony of the First Vision and of
Joseph Smith during General Conference? It was to assure the members that
he knows these things occurred.

I must say that I was thrilled when I heard that talk. I know that
President Hinckley understands the doctrine, and I know that those
doctrines haven't changed. But it is one thing to get along with our
neighbors, and it is another thing for the saints to forget who they
are. I cannot express how deeply grateful I was for the talk by President
Hinckley that you reference.
