Does this in any way suggest that it is bad to:
scp otherhost:/etc/zones/somezone.xml /etc/zones/template-somezone.xml
zonecfg -z newzone
create -t template-somezone
The source and destination servers may be at different patch levels,
and eventually different OS releases. Is a safer mechanism to zonecfg
-z export?
Yes, the only supported method at this time is to use the "export"
subcommand. We're looking at mechanisms to provide better use of
templates but at the moment, there really isn't a way to use them other
than to clone the *configuration* of an existing zone on the same
system.
