Your machine is kind of light weight for intensive publishing. I'd
definitely try to boost the RAM.
Also, you don't say if the files are all local or on a LAN/server
somewhere, which will create another bottleneck if they have to be opened
locally, which probably involves some virus checking.
May be worth downloading a new version build to see if the 64 bit version
gives you any speed.
