No sound in Wheezy; Pulse audio through Nvidia graphics card to HDMI

2015-03-23 Thread James Allsopp
Hi,
Just reinstalled debian and are having lots of problems getting the sound

watching the screen through the same HDMI so I presume hardware is good.

Eventually I want to use this system to run MPD.

Jessie bug: mounting password protected share with thunar. Also affects systemd, glib.

2015-03-23 Thread Janis Hamme
Hey all,

I've found a bug in Debian Jessie that is rather complex and I'm not
sure against what package it should be filed. Affected packages are
thunar, libglib2 and systemd.

I have some password protected shares in my /etc/fstab that are mounted
by unprivileged users, e. g.

 //192.168.1.2/Data /media/Data cifs
 vers=3.0,users,username=user,noauto,file_mode=0640,dir_mode=0750 0 0

When mounting the share with the 'mount' command a password is prompted
as intended. However, mounting the share with thunar fails:
Thunar shows unmounted but available volumes in its left sidebar. On the
first access thunar tries to mount the share and a graphical password
prompt *should* appear. Instead an error message is shown:

Failed to create password file: Permission denied

After some investigation I found out that the ask-password functionality
from systemd is used. Therefore a file has to be created in
/run/systemd/ask-password and password agents watching the directory
might prompt for the password. See [1] for reference.

Creating the password file fails, as /run/systemd/ask-password is only
writeable by root. As this functionality is intended to be used for
system-level passwords only, I guess it shouldn't be world writeable.

To mount the volume, thunar seems to rely on libglib2 (Thunar calls
g_volume_mount). See [2], [3] for the source code. I don't really
understand how that code works and why systemd ask-password is used - I
didn't manage to find the corresponding code.

In the end there are two approaches to resolving this bug:
  1) systemd ask-password is buggy and does not work as supposed
  2) systemd should not be used in this scenario and either thunar or
glib are to blame

Maybe someone with more knowledge of systemd and/or gtk programming
could look into this.

Janis

Cannot access SCSI device

2015-03-23 Thread Christian Schmidt

Hi all,

at the oment, I'm struggling with a server containing a SCSI card
(Adaptec ASC-29320ALP) which is connected to an easyRAID. On the
easyRAID, I've created a big RAID6 array which is divided into two
slices. Unformntunately, I didn't succeed in accessing those devices:

# gdisk /dev/sdb
GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.5

Problem opening /dev/sdb for reading! Error is 6.

# ls -l /dev/sdb
brw-rw---T 1 root disk 8, 16 Mar 19 10:36 /dev/sdb

Trying to access /dev/sdc gives the same result.

The server is running Wheezy:
# uname -a
Linux HOSTNAME 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.65-1+deb7u2 x86_64 GNU/Linux

dmesg | grep -i scsi delivers the followinng output.
(Yes, there is another 3ware SATA RAID controller which works qithout
any problem)

Conclusion :

terminal: )
~ # dd if=/chemin/vers/debian.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=1M // (si clef =
/dev/sdb, bs optionnel)

sda1 = NTFS
sda2 = NTFS
sda3 = NTFS (Windows 8)
sda4 = partition étendue
sda5 = NTFS (recovery)

sda6 = Wheezy (ext4)
sda7 = swap

mount -t proc proc /wheezy/proc/
mount -t sysfs sys /wheezy/sys/
mount -o bind /dev /wheezy/dev/

Conclusion :

Chais pas, trial and error, essaye!

directorios if-up.d, etc.

 distribuciones.

No, me refiero a cómo crear puentes usando ifupdown, o sea, escribiendo

no llegan a objetivos.

No
tienen las cualidades ni tampoco la formacion. Y estan ahi pues porque
 si.

Problem with accessing external USB HDD

2015-03-23 Thread Bret Busby
Hello.

I have an external USB HDD connected to a system running Debian 6 LTS.

I have tried to transfer data from the desktop intenal HDD, to the
external USB HDD.

The file manager shows as being Nautilus 2.30.1.

From time to time, as in this instance, I forget (until too late) that
Debian 6 can not cope with transferring data more than about 1GB at a
time; in this instance, I had tried to transfer about 3GB, to make
room in my /home partition.

The transfer had seized up, after transferring about 1.1GB of the
3.2GB that I had tried to ransfer, so, after a couple of days of it
apparently doing nothing, I stopped it, and, as the system monitor
showed a system load of around 43 (whatever that means - if it was as
a percentage of system capacity, it could be more meaningful, to me).
The system monitor currently shows a system load average of about 35.

As I could not then save any files, due to the interaction with the
external USB HDD, I tried to unmount the external USB HDD.

I then got a dialogue box, that is still displayed, which displays

Writing data to hp hard drive

To prevent data loss, wait until this has finished
befopre removing media or disconnecting the device.

That dialogue box has been present, with its little bar thing flying
backward and forward, for about thre or four days, now.

After about a day, the external USB HDD unmounted.

I have thence been able to save files to the system internal HDD, and,
to move files on the system internal HDD.

The external USB HDD does not show as being mounted, but, shows in the
file manager, when the Computer icon in the file manage toolbar is
selected.

While the external USB HDD is displayed on that screen, in trying to
mount the external USB HDD, to allow the write action to complete, I
get the error message

Unable to mount location

A job is pending on /dev/sdf1

If I try to select the option, from the non-dominant mouseclick menu,
Safely remove drive (as the external USB HDD is unmounted), I get
the error mesage

Unable to stop drive

One or more partitions are busy on /dev/sdf

so I can not mount the external USB HDD, to complete the write action,
to write whatever data is waiting to be written to it, and, I can not
safely remove the drive, as the data is waiting to be written to it.

Whilst it may be said that I could simply unplug the external USB HDD,
to terminate the connection, and, end the problem, from memory, in so
doing, in the past, external USB HDD's are thence rendered unusable -
written off, as is the data that has been written to them.

So, is a way available, to solve this, without writing off the
external USB HDD, and the data that has been written to it, and, the

Hello Sven and the other,

thanks for help.

I thought there is a simple and secure way to redirect to an 'This Site has
been blocked' Page for HTTP and HTTPS. But when I must destroy the safety from
HTTPS this isn't an option.

It is a nice to have feature in my project, so the user can see this site has
been blocked and there are no connection troubles (the browser error page).

Greetings,
Michael

  Michael I. wrote:

Is there really no way to redirect https request to an errorpage
  with squid3+squidguard?

Long answer: The only way is to setup a transparent proxy,
intercepting any outbound connection and terminating the encryption
on the proxy. You will need a fake CA certificate with which the
proxy is able to create fake server certificates so the client still
thinks it is connected to the real server.

And here it gets a) dangerous and b) expensive.

It is extremely bad, bad, bad, as well as dangerous. I haven't been
following the news in great detail but read all about Komodia's recent
news articles. Komodia's cracking tools are used in Superfish and
Lenovo was in trouble for pre-installing Superfish.

There are network policy/security appliances in the enterprise world,
which implement a scanning proxy for HTTPS. They come with a either a
wildcard certificate for * (signed by a valid CA!) or a fake CA
certificate, which you install onto your computers to enable the
 appliance to function.

This is of course very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing,
but sometimes there are no other options (for example HIPAA, SOX, PCI,
...) if you have to absolutley control the flow and content of data.

But then, if you are in the area where you need such
MitM-Filter-SSL-breaking-proxies, then you already know of how to do it
 and when to do it.

If you don't know how to do it and when to do it, chances are, you don't
 need it.

Guessing from Michaels TLD, he is German. This means there are several
other things to consider, based on the environment this is done in. If
this is for a company or govermental agency, the Betriebsrat (works
council) or the Personlrat and the local Datenschutzbeauftragter (data
security official) has to be involved.

 Grüße,
 Sven.

Re: Changing of ifDescr of SNMP of Debian Jessie

 Hi all!

A few days ago I decided to migrate my own servers to Debian GNU/Linux
Jessie. Having migrated my firewall, I started getting an error in the
Nagios Manubulon plugin check_snmp_int.pl since it does not find the
 interface eth1.

 # ./check_snmp_int.pl -H 10.1.0.10 -l Us3r -x passw0rd0 \

  -k -B --label -M -B --label -n eth1
 ERROR : Unknown interface eth1

This was running smoothly prior to migration, although it now seems to
 have changed the description:

 # ./check_snmp_netint.pl -H 10.1.0.10 -l Us3r -x passw0rd0 \
  -X passwOrd1 -L md5,des -n -v

Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8100/8101L/8139 PCI Fast Ethernet

So I checked the equivalence between ifDescr and ifName:

 # snmpwalk -v 3 -u Us3r -l authPriv -a MD5 -A passw0rd0 \
  -x DES -X passwOrd1 10.1.0.10 ifDescr
 IF-MIB::ifDescr.1 = STRING: lo

 IF-MIB::ifDescr.3 = STRING: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II]
 IF-MIB::ifDescr.4 = STRING: tun0

 # snmpwalk -v 3 -u Us3r -l authPriv -a MD5 -A passw0rd0 \
  -x DES -X passwOrd1 10.1.0.10 ifName
 IF-MIB::ifName.1 = STRING: lo
 IF-MIB::ifName.2 = STRING: eth1
 IF-MIB::ifName.3 = STRING: eth0
 IF-MIB::ifName.4 = STRING: tun0

So it looks like the script is trying to find eth1 in the description
of the interface, rather than the name. Possibly they were identical on
the system the author wrote the script on. I would suggest altering the
script to look for the name of the interface in an ifName.

I could use something like this, but the output is extremely long:

 # ./check_snmp_netint.pl -H 10.1.0.10 -l Us3r -x passw0rd0 \
  -X passwOrd1 -L md5,des -w 1500,295 -c 2500,400 -k -B --label -k \
  -B --label -n Realtek.*
Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8100/8101L/8139 PCI Fast Ethernet
 Adapter:UP (in=93.0Kbps/out=13.1Kbps):(1 UP): OK |

It's a pity If it can not solve because quite a while I was using the
check_snmp_int.pl plugin and was very happy with their results. But now
in Debian Jessie I'm having this problem. It seems that something has
changed in the SNMP service included in the new version of Debian since
before (on Debian Wheezy) the description matched the ifName:

 # ./check_snmp_netint.pl -H srv01.freesoftware -C public -w 1500,295 -c
 2500,400 -n -v
 Alarm at 10 + 5
 SNMP v1 login
 Filter :
 OID : 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.2.2, Desc : eth0
 OID : 1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.2.1, Desc : lo
 Name : eth0, Index : 2
 eth0:UP:(1 UP): OK |

I think it is easier to identify interfaces such as eth0, eth1, etc,
 rather than by its manufacturer/model.

Any suggestions to return to the original behavior?

 Thanks in advance.

 Best regards,
 Daniel

I have been able to install Debian on the laptop successfully...however I

You will probably need to give us more information (what steps you've
tried etc), but here are some obvious first steps.

- No Sound

Have you unmuted the sound? (In order to avoid damage, Linux installs
sound cards muted. Open a mixer program and turn up some volumes)

Is the sound card recognised? (Have a look and 'lspci' and/or 'lsusb' to
find something that looks like an Audio or Multimedia controller)

- Can't control screen brightness

Presumably, as this is a laptop, you're using FN+Something? You might
need to configure your Desktop Environment manually. Go into the Hotkeys
configuration and set the keys there.

- No Wifi..i have already followed the steps on
([1]https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi) and tried several drivers but it still
does not detect any wifi connection.

What Wifi device does the laptop have? Hopefully you didn't just pick
drivers at random?

If you run iw list, can the card see your access point at all?

Please help..I really want to use Debian on my laptop..
Thank You

2015-03-23 Thread Michael I.

Hello again,

I tested around a bit with squid3+squidguard and I found out that the
redirect works with the Internet Explorer (IE 11).

Then I tested some other browser (firefox, chrome, ..) and with all the
other browser the redirect didn't work.

Is there a bug in the Internet Explorer or is this because the IE handle
https on an other way?

You could simply customise the Squid error page instead. It's just a

Which still won't work with HTTPS.

 Here's my setup as described by aplay;
 james@Hawaiian:~$ aplay -L

The fact that aplay -L never mentions NVidia in the CARD= sections
should tell you that you have a problem.

Does your kernel see an audio device associated with your card? It
should look something like this in lspci:

eddie% lspci | grep -i nvidia
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107 [GeForce
GT 640] (rev a1)
01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GK107 HDMI Audio Controller (rev a1)

Whatever you have for your PCI IDs for your graphics card, there
should be a .1 device for the Audio Controller portion.

If you don't see that, you may have an older card that doesn't support
directing audio to HDMI with software. The older cards typically
require a wire to connect the SPDIF output from the motherboard (or
other) sound card to an SPDIF input on the graphics card. If you have
that kind of card, check your cabling.

Re: (FUERA DE TEMA) Lo del admin despedido

2015-03-23 Thread Altair Linux
Buenas,

no llegan a objetivos.

No
tienen las cualidades ni tampoco la formacion. Y estan ahi pues porque
si.

Setting up MTS MBlaze Ultra in debian squeeze 6.0.10

Hello,
This is Tapas Das. I am a debian user since 3 years. Recently I collected
MTS MBlaze Ultra (Model-AC2792) Modem. This is supposed to run in debian-6
according to the system specification given at
http://www.indiamart.com/company/9316197/data-card.html

The user manual supplied with the device says the requirement of gcc
kernel-devel (or, corresponding kernel development package of the
distribution) to be installed.

In my system gcc is already installed and I was unable to identify the
kernel development package. usb-modeswitch is already installed.

As I plug in my device, it is recognized as a storage device...not as a
modem.

Please help me in this regard.

Maybe so, but finding that in the prefs tree is at its best, difficult.

find something that looks like an Audio or Multimedia controller)

I had a LOT of problems on and off until a fellow list member once

that IS what it does

*it works!* Listening to music right now thanks to whomever did
suggest it recently.

PulseAudio Volume Control is what it comes up as under the

that info will help with searching this list's archives, too, for
other leads if needed...

You can't telnet to an ssl port.
Use:
openssl s_client -connect [IP]:smtps

I'm sorry if I muddied the waters by suggesting using telnet.
I find it a useful tool to quickly test whether I can reach a port,
whether anything is listening, and whether the response is the
same as

I got last time/when things were working, even if that response is
to connect for a few seconds and then disconnect (like 80 does).
And I can get the results from ten differnet ports in one screenful
of text.

A slight mistake; but now the OP is back on the right track all he
should have to do is issue the helo, mail from:, rcpt to: and data
commands to test whether sending mail is possible. If it is he can
then take a closer look at his exim setup.

OK, following the doc at http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/mail.htm, I
could enter:
HELO my domain

I always use EHLO but have no idea if it makes a difference.

MAIL FROM account@mydomain

but things get interesting when I enter the rcpt to:

RCPT TO: g...@extremeground.com

Shouldn't that be in according to rfc2821?
I just tried it with EHLO and using RCPT TO: g...@extremeground.com
and got the same result.

The problem seems to have been the location of the protocol = smtps
line. I had it originally in
/etc/exim4/conf.d/transport/30_exim4-config_remote_smtp_smarthost.
Moving it to /etc/exim4/exim4.conf.template seems to have done the trick.

Disk quota exceeded ... but no quota are defined.

2015-03-23 Thread Bruno Costacurta
Hello to All,

my debian server is freezed with quota exceeded but there is no quota
installed on it.

Debian version is :
uname -a
Linux vps622 2.6.32-042stab103.6 #1 SMP Wed Jan 21 13:07:39 MSK 2015 i686
GNU/Linux

No quota are setup and disk is not full as only 3% of usage are reported :

sudo df -h

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/simfs 160G 3.8G 157G 3% /
tmpfs 205M 72K 205M 1% /run
tmpfs 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock
tmpfs 410M 0 410M 0% /run/shm

mount does not indicate quota setup :

/vz/private/622 on / type simfs (rw,relatime)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,nosuid, nodev, noexec, relatime)
tmpfs on /run type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,noexec,relatime,size=209716k,mode=755)
tmpfs on /run/lock type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,size=5120k)
tmpfs on /run/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,size=419420k)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts
(rw,nosuid,noexec,relatime,gid=5,mode=620,ptmxmode=000)

sudo du -ch /run
72K/run
72Ktotal

But all services are freezed with quota exeeded errors.
when I log :
zsh: locking failed for /home/bruno/.histfile: disk quota exceeded: reading
anyway

Or in postfix logs :
Mar 24 04:44:52 vps622 postfix/cleanup[2727]: warning: mail_queue_enter:
create file incoming/181079.2727: Disk quota exceeded
..etc..

Also MySQL also cannot be started.
Once rebooted the server is fine only few minutes before facing quota
exceeded.

I cannot find any quota setup.
And indeed there is no quota packages installed neither.

dpkg -l | grep quota
--- nothing.

How to check this quota problem ?
Thanks for any help or clue.

Bye
Bruno
