[Dspace-tech] Email logging location
Hi! I have a DSpace 5.1 server set up. It is able to send mail to addresses within our organization's domain. However, it doesn't seem able to send email to addresses outside our domain. For example, when registering a user email address that doesn't end with our domain's address. I think that, ultimately, this is not a DSpace problem. However, in order to work with our email administrator, I'm trying to hunt down the error that DSpace is receiving from the email server. It's not clear where to find that in the logs. Thoughts? Thanks! [Dspace-tech] email errors
All, DSpace 4.3, RHEL6 VERY occasionally, I see warnings in the space log thrown by exceptions in notifyGroupOfTask() and notifyOfReject(). In these cases, the exception's getMessage() is null, so no explanation is available... Additionally, in every case, the addressees DO receive notifications 99.9% of the time. Any ideas? I'm thinking of adding a getStackTrace() to the exception clause here, maybe that will give me a clue. Hi Fernando, Are you talking about the notification emails the DSpace Administrator receives for submissions and registrations, or the ones that the end-user / submitter receives? You can change who receives the new-user-registration emails by setting: # Recipient for new user registration emails registration.notify = ${mail.registration.notify} Leaving that blank means that the admin doesn't get this email. Re: [Dspace-tech] Email notification to existing specified users only
Dear LifeH2O As helix mentioned, this is not possible in DSpace. To give you a hint on how you can implement it, you need to create a new type of input control for the submission form, which will make ajax requests upon completion to a new servlet that will be responsible to answer such requests with an XML or JSON, depending on the autocomplete control that you will be using. In this servlet you can search (and return) all metadata values of a specific field, or all epersons as you mentioned or whatever. In this servlet you can search (and return) all metadata values of a specific field, or all epersons as you mentioned or whatever. [Dspace-tech] Email notification to existing specified users only
We are making system for university. When a student submits his report with adviser and co-adviser names, only the adviser/co-adviser should be notified by email to accept/reject/edit submission. What we want is that while submitting advisor should be selected in drop down (or suggested while typing). So only the advisors who already exist in the system can be selected. When item submission completes only those selected advisors should be emailed. Not the whole group in workflow who can accept/reject. It looks like *choice authority plugin, *is made for this job, how should we configure it for this kind of use? -- View this message in context: http://dspace.2283337.n4.nabble.com/Email-notification-to-existing-specified-users-only-tp4664880.html Sent from the DSpace - Tech mailing list archive at Nabble.com. -- This SF.net email is sponsored by Windows: Build for Windows Store. http://p.sf.net/sfu/windows-dev2dev ___ DSpace-tech mailing list DSpace-tech@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/dspace-tech List Etiquette: https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/Mailing+List+Etiquette

Hi Lewatle, you're mixing 2 distinct notification features here: 1) There's RSS, which works best with a specialized application called RSS reader; this has nothing to do with email at all. 2) There are subscriptions, which are sent by email. As administrator, you have to have SMTP properly configured in DSpace. As the subscribing user, you should select a collection/community you wish to subscribe to. Re: [Dspace-tech] Email Setup Difficulties
I'm still having a problem with this. I've gone ahead and purchased and configured SSL to work on the server. I've made sure that the ssl certs are in the java key store. The ssl and mail server work perfectly with the rest of the applications (all of which run on the same server but under apache). Dspace runs on tomcat but uses the mod_jk connector to interact with apache. I've tried every configuration I can think of in my dspace.cfg mail section. The two main configurations that I think should work are also detailed below. My dspace version is 1.5.2 Despite all of this I continue to receive the error below. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've been dealing with this issue for a very long time and am under pressure to get it fixed. Re: [Dspace-tech] Email notifications for internal server errors in newer versions
No, it didn't go away. You should get an email when an internal error occurs. Have you checked your server to make sure your emails are being released? We had a situation recently where that happened. Also, have you checked the dspace.log file(s) for any error messages that may be occurring when your application attempts to send an email out? Re: [Dspace-tech] Email Setup Difficulties
Is it possible to set this up to not use SSL? What configuration settings do I need to change? When I changed the port of the mail configuration from 465 to 25 I continued to get the same SSL problem. I never really intended to connect to the mail server through SSL it seems to be attempting to do so on its own or through some configuration setting I'm not aware of. Thanks for your help. Re: [Dspace-tech] Email Setup Difficulties
I've spent some time working with my server hosting company. We've determined that all server related mail functions are working fine. This means it must be dspace but I can't discover the problem. It continues to give me the error message that states: Caused by: sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find valid certification path to requested target at sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilder.engineBuild(SunCertPathBuilder.java:174) at java.security.cert.CertPathBuilder.build(CertPathBuilder.java:238) at sun.security.validator.PKIXValidator.doBuild(PKIXValidator.java:280) I've ensured that the certificate and private key have been properly added to the java key store. So perhaps it has something to do with the way dspace is accessing the key store, and maybe java does not know where the key store is. Are either of these possibilities? or any other suggestions? -Bryce On Fri, Apr 30, 2010 at 11:58 PM, bryce ray bryceray1...@gmail.com wrote: That is all actually commented out. I don't know anything about DSpace 1.6 mail server, so I might be completely offbase and stupid. But I was just going through your dspace.cfg and see that the SSL part is uncommented: # Pass extra settings to the Java mail library. Comma separated, equals sign between # the key and the value. # mail.extraproperties = mail.smtp.socketFactory.port=465, \ # mail.smtp.socketFactory.class=javax.net.ssl.SSLSocketFactory, \ # mail.smtp.socketFactory.fallback=false Wouldn't this mean that you are configuring DSpace mailserver to use SSL? I understand from your postings that you don't want DSpace to use SSL. Could this be the culprit? -Debashree I believe I fixed that error but It was probably irrelevant to the email problem. I'm now getting this error message in my log file when trying to send an email. It appears as if dspace is trying to connect to my mail server using SSL. However, my mail server does not use SSL. I've set my port to 25 for the mail server which should indicate a regular connection (as opposed to 465 which is typically SSL). That is all actually commented out. It just looks uncommented because of the formatting of the email. My main distribution is actually 1.5.2 if that helps. I tried upgrading to 1.6 because I couldn't get email to work in 1.5.2 but that didn't help. The error above is actually from 1.5.2 and it would be great if I could find a solution to that version. [Dspace-tech] Email Problem - SSL
Current Dspace Version: 1.5.2 A while back someone who worked here added a component /dspace/modules/jspui/src/main/java/org/dspace/core/Email.java I believe the purpose of this was to allow us to connect to gmail via smtp using TLS. This was setup and working fine. However, now I need to change our email settings so that they use our internal smtp server. The problem is that our internal email server is not ssl or tls. I've verified that the email settings (host, uname, pass, port) are correct on a different installation of dspace (without the Email.java component). To me, it seems that the problem has to be that dspace is trying to connect to our internal system using the ssl or tls protocols. Is there someone way I can fix this short of removing the Email.java file and repackaging? Thanks for your help. -- Download Intel#174; Parallel Studio Eval Try the new software tools for yourself. Re: [Dspace-tech] Email Parameter Customization
Hello Caryn, yes this is possible. You got to change the email template and the source which generates the email and uses the email template. In your example this would be [dspace-src]/dspace/config/emails/change_password and [dspace-src]/dspace-api/src/main/java/org/dspace/eperson/Accountmanager.java Then you got to run (assuming you are using 1.5.x) mvn package and ant update and redeploy the application. Re: [Dspace-tech] Email subscriptions in 1.5
... I don't think that server jobs, like sub-daily, uses the parameters from the /webapps/jspui/WEB-INF tree, but rather those that are kept in the dspace-api source tree (/dspace-api/src/main/resources ... Wow, what a great piece of trivia! Never would have guessed that one. But you're right, and it works. Thank you very much. So anyone using 1.5 needs to keep the TWO (yes, TWO) source Messages.properties files in sync (at least for email subscriptions to work). As Urban and Marie-Hélène pointed out, the two files are at: $DSPACE_SOURCE/dspace/modules/jspui/src/main/resources/Messages.properties AND $DSPACE_SOURCE/dspace-api/src/main/resources/Messages.properties I believe this discrepancy (if I may call it that?) has been resolved with the 1.5.1 release. Excellent, thanks Mark. Actually, the Messages.properties file did cause me a lot of headaches upgrading from 1.4 to 1.5 since we'd added a reasonable amount of stuff to it over the years in a not very formal way. Re: [Dspace-tech] Email subscriptions in 1.5
Hmm. Something strange in the state of DSpace... I tried a quick fix just to get it working, namely putting that line: org.dspace.eperson.Subscribe.authors = Authors: In Messages.properties and then redeploying. The line is definitely in [dspace-install-dir]/webapps/jspui/WEB-INF/classes/Messages.properties and I even restarted tomcat just for good measure, but I still get the same fatal error. Guess I'll try syncing the whole Messages.properties file but I'll need to be a little more careful about that. Re: [Dspace-tech] Email subscriptions in 1.5
Also you might want to make sure that the Messages.properties content used by ResourceBundle do not contain any un-commented reserved characters. For instance, I have just realised that putting html characters - such as ouml; - in those strings can cause the same error. There might also be an issue with which Messages file is updated and where. I don't think that server jobs, like sub-daily, uses the parameters from the /webapps/jspui/WEB-INF tree, but rather those that are kept in the dspace-api source tree (/dspace-api/src/main/resources), and that goes into the dspace-api-1.5.0.jar. But someone who knows the new structure better than me could probably clarify (or correct) this. / Urban Andersson Gary Browne wrote: Hmm. Something strange in the state of DSpace... Hi all In our 1.5 installation, emails were not being sent for subscribers (nightly cron job). I tried installing the 1.5.1 version of org.dspace.eperson.Subscribe.java but still no emails. When I run /dspace/bin/sub-daily, nothing happens. The steps I followed to install the new Subscribe.java class were as follows: cp Subscribe.java $DSPACE_SRC/dspace-api/src/main/java/org/dspace/eperson/ cd $DSPACE_SRC/dspace mvn clean package ant update I then restarted tomcat and ran sub-daily. Any assistance would be much appreciated. [Dspace-tech] [EMAIL PROTECTED] upgrades to DSpace 1.5.x
Dear DSpace Community, Earlier this week we completed the upgrade of [EMAIL PROTECTED] from DSpace 1.4.1 (JSPUI) to the latest DSpace 1.5.x revision. Likewise, we switched over completely to use the Texas AM Manakin based XMLUI during this upgrade process. The service can now be explored at original [EMAIL PROTECTED] host. http://dspace.mit.edu For MIT Libraries, this upgrade represents the culmination of more than a years worth of effort done in collaboration with other individuals and organizations within the DSpace community, beginning with the reorganization of the DSpace 1.4.2 code-base, the establishment of the Maven based build process, and culminating in the in the release of DSpace 1.5.0, the addition of maintenance fixes and the upgrade of our systems. We at MIT feel that the DSpace 1.5.X branch, which now contains a significant load of bug fixes, is now prepared for a maintenance release. As release coordinator on the 1.5.1 release, I expect to now begin testing the release of a 1.5.1 beta update in the coming week. I would like to thank all the developers and community members who contributed to the DSpace 1.5.X codebase in the past year. We could have not have accomplished our own production goals without your efforts within the community. Cheers, Mark Diggory ~ Mark R. [Dspace-tech] Email encoding error
Hi, We are having some issues with our Dspace instance regarding email encoding (config/email templates). The templates have characters such as ê, ç and ~, and when they are sent, it's all messed up. In the email body the characters are replaced by ? but some weird char sequence is added in the beginning, where I recognize words such as ANSI. I've taken a look around Dspace and even manakin options but haven't found anything about it, so I ask it here, because the issue happens just with emails, and not the website. I configured my dspace with a smtp server that dont use SSL. It works fine. But at my institute, the email server use SSL and dspace dont send email. What can I do? I cant see how this makes any trouble. As I understand it, smtp servers dont communicate over TLS between each other but provide this method only for sending from the MUA to protect your credentials in case you have to authenticate to the server. Two MTAs certainly *can* use either SSMTP or STARTTLS to communicate via an encrypted channel. Whether there is any pair of MTAs configured so that they *do* is another question. Any SMTP that I set up, MTA or MUA, will offer or attempt STARTTLS, but I know it isn't universal practice. If the MTA that Mr. Ramiro must use is configured to demand SSL then he must supply SSL. To do this, one must either configure JavaMail to offer SSL, or do what I do: install an MTA under one's own control on Tomcat's host and set it up to offer SSL when forwarding to the institutional email hub. There doesn't seem to be a way to tell JavaMail to request SSL using dspace.cfg parameters. It would be necessary to set mail.smtp.starttls.enable = true in the Properties passed to Session.getInstance() or Session.getDefaultInstance(), but we'd need support from DSpace to do that. So it appears that this method is not usable with DSpace 1.4.1, which is the latest I have running. It would be good for someone to file a feature-request for this, or even a patch. Then one would need to set up a certificate store for the account used to run the servlet container, so that JavaMail can validate the MTA's certificate. On the other hand, setting up an MTA without creating problems such as an open SMTP relay requires great care and much reading. If you don't already know how to set up an MTA then I would suggest getting help with the specific MTA you choose. Further problems you may encounter: o It is possible that the institutional MTA requires a client certificate to prove that it is talking with a known partner. I've never seen this done, but it could be done. If so, you will need to work with that MTA's administrators to provide what it is expecting. o One reason to require SSL is that the MTA also requires AUTH PLAIN or AUTH LOGIN authentication. These methods send the credentials in plaintext, meaning that valuable passwords are exposed on the network. Encryption by SSL protects the passwords. So you may find that you have a functioning SSL connection but now you need to supply credentials. Again you may need to negotiate this with the MTA's admin.s. Some MTAs will refuse plaintext AUTH mechanisms over an unencrypted connection but will accept other AUTH mechanisms without encryption. JavaMail can do AUTH DIGEST-MD5, so if that is acceptable to the institutional MTA without encryption, and you don't have any other requirement for encryption, then this may be sufficient. Finally, you might be able to negotiate the use of unencrypted SMTP from your specific host as an exception to the general rule. -- Mark H. If emails dont come through, you have to finde out where they stop: Do they get filtered as spam on your receiving server? Do they really get sent. e.g. if you log in with a different user that has an address from a freemail provider - you can create an account and read and send by webmail for testing purposes. Or you can check the logs of the smtp server dspace uses to find out what kind of problem it registers while sending or take a look into the queues to see if the mail is still there. Re: [Dspace-tech] Email
Hello, are you sure you can use gmail for this? I suggest you read the docs again. IIRC you have to use either localhost or a smarthost. I dont know whether the java class can talk SMTP itself with all the different authentication options and the like. But I might be wrong. Then, remove the mailto: from both, feedback recipient and sender line and actually everything except the address. The notation might be ac- ceptable and useful if you want to pass in your clear text name but it just doesnt make sense this way and is definitely calling for problems.
