[Elecraft] WAS: (With all the problems) ... New Elecraft Opportunities - Products ..

2012-11-15 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
A little Off Topic the way I've wrote this perhaps (apologies) ...

Wayne - N6KR Wrote ...Our goal is to improve existing products while
seeking input on new products and features..
Our motto, hands-on ham radio, our customers as well building Elecraft
gear.

I hope we all have a richer experience as a result...

=

Well MY VOTE in case I've missed it ?? would be for a:

Dedicated Elecraft Product (FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T\HAVEN'T BUILT ONE BEFORE)

Elecraft Styled Portable-in-Hand Step Attenuator

The kind that can be left in line during Rx\Tx and adjusted accordingly for
various Power Outputs from ones transceiver ... There was a nice design to
take ones transceiver into the Milliwatt AND Microwatt output power range
in the 1981 or 1983 ARRL Handbook from what I remember ..?

And I think Ten Tec did one in yester-year also but their like Hen's Teeth
to find now ...

For me this would be a tremendous addition to the shack, so perhaps for
others as well... And YES Wayne ! This WOULD make my operating experience a
LOT Richer ..

Again Apologies guy's if I've missed-the-train on this, not checked the
Elecraft website in quite a while...

[Elecraft] Elecraft KX-3 Serial Numbers To Date ...

2012-04-16 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
As of April 2012...

Anyone know where we might be with the Elecraft KX-3 Transceiver Serial
Numbers...

Re: Those folks who have been Field Testers Those That Have Their Radio
Shipped Already..

Maybe A STUPID QUESTION ! ?

For THAT I Unreservedly Apologise for bringing this up, but being a future
KX-3 Buyer, I'm kinda interested.

Just Wanted To Know sorta, get a ball-park figure of the very little
that like everyone else, I KNOW that has been played-with or shipped thus
far..

...The Reasoning Behind This... I have 2 x K2's... One being a Vintage
K2 in at least that the rig is STILL stock NOT upgraded in ANY way
firmware wise..

Serial Number : 01432

My 2nd K2 I can't recall at the moment it's Serial Number - But I guess
maybe in the 3000's - 4000's - 5000's Serial (Lisa@Elecraft will know
tho)...

So I Kinda was playin' around with Serial Numbers in my head and was
thinkin, of tryin to order a KX-3 when the time comes with the SAME Serial
Numbers as my K2's ... Or something more Special Agent Covert - akin to
Serial Number 007 or something..

Anyways whatever happens in the near future I KNOW - I WILL BE more than
pleased with whatever I get from the folks there in Aptos..
TIA

[Elecraft] Soon To Be KX-3 Owner Question ...

2012-03-30 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Guy's...

Can someone shed some light on wether the KX-3 has got audible (to the ear)
CW Sidetone from the internal speaker / Like we are mostly used to with
just about any other radio ?

Just watched the KX3 Activates Little Si For Summits On The Air - SOTA
video on Youtube ...way ta go fella's who did that ! But one thing that to
me
seems apparent in the video is the LACK of high volume on the internal
speaker for when a person is actually keying the radio themselves... As
apposed to the station coming back to them

Perhaps it was just the outdoors location that seemed to mute or make the
audio from the KX3's internal speaker sound a bit lower in volume the
sidetone oscillation audio on the video, I don't know..so thought I'd ask
for comments from folks with more experience..

TIA

[Elecraft] K2 K1 E-Numbers ..

2012-03-01 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Good Afternoon Folks From Bonnie Scotland...

Just wonderin' if some kind person here on the list could possible post up..

The E Numbers for the black knobs that cover the shafts on the Volume ...
RF-Gain Switches etc (and all others I've not included)...

On The ..

Elecraft K2 Transceiver

Elecraft K1 Transceiver

I think the knob SIZES (so therefore e-numbers) WILL be different in both
cases here ... From what I remember
the size of the knobs on the K1 are slightly SMALLER in diamater to the K2
- So perhaps the e-numbers for
stock purposes will be different..

I realise the E-Numbers for these will be in the subsequent build manuals
for each rig... Unfortunatley at
the moment, my manual is temporarily stored in an un-accessable place for me
here in the home..

Hope this doesn't cause too much fuss for folks .. Lookin' forward to what
ever folks can share THANKS for
all the help on this..

[Elecraft] Radio Electronics Line Drawing Software, URL's, Libraries...

2011-06-08 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Hello Good People (on the various lists included)

Just wanted to ask try to explain what I am looking for

Does anyone have any idea where to find, I guess the Artwork (as I would
call it - perhaps this is the wrong words to use on my account of ignorance
!) for when a person wants to design radio cabinets, panels, switches,
knobs etc etc.

We all have the various manufacturers manuals that come with our equipment
where we see the black white line drawings throughout the pages there,
outlining the various functions controls etc.

What I am tryin' to ascertain is - How Is This Done\Designed within the
various manufacturers BEFORE we actually go and buy a given piece of
equipment that comes with it's said manual ?

What\How do the various designers in a given company use on their respective
computers to put these pictures of equipment in line drawing form for us
to see ?

Is it done with some sort of C.A.D. software ? or maybe something else ?

Is\Will There Be a steep learning curve for this sort of thing for a general
ham op to play around with ?

Is there some kind of readily available software that someone on the list
already uses, that perhaps comes with its own Libraries for the designers
to use to put together the final Black White Line Drawings that we all
see in these given manuals etc etc ?

Or perhaps a URL that someone knows with software libraries included ?

I would like to try and build up here on my shack PC a Library of
different pictures if you like of various designs done in this way to
hopefully use in the future where I put an idea together - To help I guess
with the final look of something that comes to mind.

I've tried on many occasions (to many to remember !) to turn a internet
Photo - into - a line drawing with Adobe Photoshop to see if that would
be an easy answer, alas the results were disappointing to say the least.

Although I am NOT by any means an electronics wizard\guru, I DO however get
immense enjoyment out of trying to design the various parts\elements to the
ideas that sometimes come into my mind regarding this sort of thing.

With all the brilliant beautiful minds that fill the various lists here, I
am hoping that someone can give some good insight thoughts to what some of
the answers to this may be, NOT just for me but for future folks out there
that have perhaps as yet asked the same question - But have always wondered.

Thanks Goes Out To Each Everyone Of You Out There Across the Globes
Continents, the 4 Corners Of The Globe for at least taking the time to
possibly read this..

Much Obliged,

[Elecraft] KX3 External Iambic Key Post...

2011-05-22 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Guy's...

Yesterday I posted a plea for anyone with insider-information, particularly
wether the folks at Elecraft will be offering the key (seen in some of the
Video posts by others recently) as an individual item that one might
purchase - albeit at a later date when things at Elecraft are all sorted out
with the KX3 rig and ready for us all to make our respective orders..

I was in particular looking for someone who was at Dayton who may have asked
either Wayne Or Eric the very same question I posted here on the list
yesterday... A ball-park price would have been nice also..

So far, no direct information replies on this from the group or an
individual on the group..

But ! I HAVE to ask..WHY is the heading of my post from yesterday being used
for discussion on other matters ? Can we try PLEASE - to not hijack others
post headings on the list, mainly so that others who are looking for a
particular area of interest (i.e Me ..in this case), and such like,.. for
any info on the KX3 External Paddle can do NOT have to wade through many,
many posts in anticipation that there might be something of interest in what
one is looking for\asking..

Only to be faced with subjects that are not directly - or sometimes
otherwise related to the original post Heading ..

Sorry to be a Curmudgeon on this guy's, but for those of us who can't make
Dayton now or at any time in their life, this information if sought found
ahead of an official release can be valuable - and may be also to others..

I personally are waiting patiently to find out info on availability
pricing on this particular item...

Carry On Folks..

[Elecraft] K3 External Key ...

2011-05-21 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Guy's..

Anyone got any inside information on wether we will be able to buy the small
Iambic Key we have seen on the recent K3 videos - Seperatley from the
radio itself when the launch is finally underway ?

Not sure if that particular key would work with other rigs etc, but if it
could be adapted, I for one would be interested in a purchase..

So anyone out there got solid answers to the above questions ?

[Elecraft] New Japanese - JA QRP Book...

2011-03-06 Thread Andy - GM0NWI

Good Morning Good People..

Just came across this a few moments ago..

Mr.Imai JF1RNR

http://qrpjapan.blogspot.com/2010/03/japanese-qrp-books-6.html

New to me, perhaps to others also... Since this is the most likely best
place to post such
Info as there will more than likely be some JA Stations who lurk around
these parts... AND..
(my way of thinking anyway) perhaps there may be some Japanes Americans
reading this also..

Can someone please look into this publication - Either by finding out more
about if one can actually read Japanese from the website it's displayed on
here..

OR..

Perhaps someone might know how to contact the QRP Group there, or perhaps
the original author -
Mr.Imai JF1RNR and enquire if indeed there is an English Version of the book
available..

Will there be an English Version available at anytime ?

Perhaps some of the folks here who actually run a QRP outlet might have the
contacts to
Convert the Japanese language to English and then perhaps arrange for it to
be printed elsewhere
For a wider English speaking market..

IF NOT THEN How do Radio Hams outside of Japan actually go about ordering
this book ? - Even tho they may NOT be able to personally read Japanese..
There seems to be some discussion that the illustrations are easy to follow
... with great pencil drawn clear illustration and markings so I guess that
this still might be a great book for some of us who are interested to add to
our QRP Library..

I for one are real interested in this so I thought others might be also ..
Just wanted to share
What I found with the group..

Let's hope this gets some real good discussion from the list members in the
coming days...

But I'm sure that there are others out there that a lot of us either have

[Elecraft] Any ZL Stations QRV On The List ..?

2008-07-23 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Folks..

Wonderin' if any ZL-Stations are QRV on the list..? I've got an uncle in
Taradale - Hawkes Bay, ..who TOOK the exam for ZL Licencee about 10 years
ago and sadly failed...close tho so am told...

We are in daily chat on MSN from GM-Land to ZL... and he has expressed a
desire to learn again, with a view of eventually takin the exam in the hope
of
Earning his FULL HF licence ...

If there is an ZL stations on the list who know, what has to be done (I've
already given him the NZART website and he's currently looking ..but unsure
as to what he needs to download) and WHO to contact as respect to the
possibility of a tutor in his area... Could someone from that area or
generally
a ZL Station near him get intouch with me, and I can share some details and
give pointers on his current situation..??

I see from my search on the NZART website, that there are some book packs
that one can order to aid with studying for the ZL exam, available direct
From NZART... This might be a start for him, but again I DON'T want to
instruct him to go buy these, if he does'nt have some form of local tutor,
Or class to attend in his local area.. some advice on this either to myself
or direct would be better I feel..

He HAS already began lookin' at some kind of Syllabus - But I think from
what he has said that it's the AMERICAN LICENCING SYLLABUS from the ARRL
Website.!! (Horror) So don't want him to go down a track that will lead to
confusion and possible failure..

I'd appreciate this tremendously ... I have been in contact with him over
the last 15 years or so, and the subject of him gettin' licenced comes up
WEEKLY.. I was under the impression that the New Zealand licencing structure
was the same as here in the UK (i.e Novice - Intermediate - FULL) but I
received an e-mail from my uncle just this morning, and he seems to think
(dunno if he's looked into this in the last few days) that this is NOT the
case..?? Not wanting to cause him anymore confusion, I've took the initive
to firstly see if anyone down there local to him, might be able to telephone
Or even personally pay him a visit to help him on his way..

Here's Hopein...

Lookin' Forward To Any Replies...

Until then.. Kia-Ora And Thankyou..

[Elecraft] SMT Work In The Ham Radio Shack WHAT TOOLS Are Required..?

2008-06-24 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Hello Good People..!

The title of this post say's it all really..

If one were going to succumb to the inevitable of the future... and include
SMT WORK in the Shack in the same way we have undertaken general work with
thru-hole technology...

What Tools WOULD be required..? (In The Shack)

To do a wide varying range of jobs that we see both NOW and possibly in the
future..?

I'm sure that everyone here would be VERY interested in folk's out there
ideas ...know-how's
...PICTURES (hint hint !) and website links for sure...

Apologies if this has been discussed previously to this depth... Just
thought it an interesting Thread for everyone involved newbie's And

[Elecraft] Elecraft Paint Color And Product Order No.

2008-02-16 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Guy's...

Perhaps I've missed this over the months\years...

Can someone shed any light, on what paint color the Elecraft equipment is
sprayed before
We buy from the boys..?

Is there a Part No. Etc that one should know...?

Does someone on the list know of another spray paint product name part no.
That might
Come close to the finished color we are so used to..?

Finally where could this be possibly be purchased..?

Aplogies for openin this one up again, but I fear I may have missed it first
time around,
That is IF it's been discussed previously..

[Elecraft] Future Personal\Club\Dealer Poject ..Possibly..?

2008-01-25 Thread Andy - GM0NWI

Guy's..

Whilst sittin' here lookin' out the warm n cozy shack window, at the
absolutely atrocious weather we are having here in Stirling,
Bonnie Scotland...

I came across a recent present, sort of... an empty Cadburys biscuit tin
that a relative had left me to do anything with over
The festive season...you know that kind I'm sure.. The big square tin boxes
that hold multi-compartments with a range of ones favourite
Assorted biscuits and confectionaries... This one is a nice deep dark
purple color with hardly any markings cept for the 4 sides
Where the makers emblem is painted... No raised ridges etc with embossed
lettering or anything of that ilk...

Well.. it kinda got me thinkin... I for one for more years than I care to
remember have yearned after skill and possibly someones
Guidance\Companionship to construct either an authentic or revised
up-to-date Paraset WWII radio - as used by our very own S.O.E
Men and woman in the field of conflict during the hostilities...

There are so many people on this list, of varying vintages shall we say
(not wanting to offend anyone you see of course)..with
Varying degrees of knowledge, enthusiasm, experience... ALL with the SAME
degree of enthusiasm, some of us just need to be guided,
Prodded, pushed, shoved in the right direction..!

Is'nt that what Ham Radio AND QRP is all about..??

Wouldn't this tinif someone had the know how, be a great donor for such
a project..!? I am and probably will be for the rest of
My ham career feeling my way as regards the giant footsteps of Homebrew,
but no-doubt there are others out there who could
Envisage this.. I've looked for many a year at the various sites on the net,
that describe the folks who have courageously delved right
In to undertake such projects - For me tho, I think this could be a long way
off..

Would any of the well known and respected small kit-suppliers amongst us,
ever consider updating (if possible) the circuit of these
Historic, nostalgic radio's..? I personally don't know where to start !
but if someone had the know-how or could possibly get together
With some like minded people putting their combined knowledge together, I'm
sure with the past years releases in the QRP Fraternity that we have seen
from folks around these parts ...That a revised edition just might be
possible..

Then folks like me, would have an REAL good excuse to have something to
build into that leftover Christmas biscuit tin.. sittin there
Just cryin' out to be cannablised.. or is it vandalised..!! Oh ! Heck..you
know what I mean...

Please take it away guy's, give the list your thoughts, desires, loves needs
on this...and anything else you care to SHARE with us ...
Remember Knowledge Is Power...just because we choose not to use a lot of
it (think about it..!) ..does'nt mean we don't have it..!

Just a thought..

[Elecraft] No Elecraft List

2007-12-19 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Guy's...

This post will either get through then hopefully someone can shed some light
on a situation for
Me, ...or this post might not get through, then it will have been a
fruitless exercise..

I seem to be having problems (for the first time since joining the reflector
many years back)
With my NOT receiving ANY posts from the group since the 7th of December
2007..!?

There are absolutely NO e-mail\posts coming through here from the group
whatsoever..

I wonder if anyone else is having this problem..? And if someone at
Elecraft can please
Verify for me in person to my e-mail address if they are aware of a problem
with my
Subscription or details

Thanks..

[Elecraft] Just Wonderin'...

2007-10-20 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Guy's...

Santa came REAL early this year.. today I took delivery of the ARRL Handbook
2008 and the new version of the
Low Power Communications book by Rich Arnald.. It's gonna be a good one..!

Flickin' through the new Handbook I came across the article again for the
3CX1500D7 RF Linear Amplifer... the
Very same one that was featured on the front cover of last years handbook
with the write up inside also..

It got me thinkin...

Exactly HOW MUCH, would the tube or tubes for one of these beauties cost in
todays money..?? Also the base for the
Tube, HOW MUCH would that be..??

WHERE would one purchase such things.. (don't see any reference in the
article to places that may stock these)..

Indeed if the parts are expensive at todays prices ... is there an older
alternative that one could use in such
A homebrew project..??

Enquiring Minds Are REALLY INTERESTED in learnin..'

[Elecraft] W1FB Tuna Tin Circuit

2007-10-18 Thread Andy - GM0NWI

Guy's...

This might sound REALLY out of this world.. BUT..

In all my QRP Library publications,..AND most places I've looked, I just
can't find the original schematic circuit diagram for our very own Doug
DeMaw's ORIGINAL Tuna Tin Tx'er..

Yep.! There's plenty pics of folks creations from the design and also the
new pictures and design circuits of the offerings
From Rex W1??? Who does those type of things for us nowadays..

I kinda thought - wrongly maybe that there would be reproduced circuit
diagrams, or actual hand drawing scribbling of the
Original design by Doug - perhaps not..

Anyone give out any pointers or ideas here please.. I'm NOT currently an
ARRL member so can't access anything they might have
In their archives..

[QRP-L] W1FB Tuna Tin Circuit FOUND

2007-10-18 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Golly..!

You guy's are just amazin'.. WHAT A RESPONSE ..just like bein' in a
pile-up... ! Took about 5 minutes then the QRM started..!

Glad to say that many of you came thru on this for me.. and I now have the
information I was looking for.. Infact I HAD the original
QST issue with the article by Doug all along here in the shack, just did'nt
realise..

Many, Many Thanks to each and everyone of you who responded ..there most
likely will be others in the coming days.. But thankyou
One an all for the efforts, It was such a mystery to me, that with all the
QRP Publications (as someone said, even the ones by
Doug himself) did'nt have the original 70's circuit in there..! Go
Figure..

Anyway, gonna be studyin' this for the next few days, I'm thinkin' about
putting on my santa note, to see if I could either get
The original parts from the 70's (that'll keep the elfs busy..) or maybe one
of the updated versions there in my Christmas stocking (
Note - They are ONLY for Christmas)..!

Thanks Folks Much Obliged..

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Seven Years Old

2007-10-09 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Snip [...It is hard to believe, but 7 years ago today, I finished my K2 S/N
1422 and had the first QSO on it...]

Well.. THAT DOES give me hope Steve..! I must have purchased my beloved K2
S/n 01432 soon afterwards... AND SHE'S STILL NOT COMPLETE..!!
They say Life Takes You On A Journey.. It certainly has here..!, what with
health problems that I am plagued with daily (I suffer from Spina
Bifida and are confined 24/7 to a wheelchair for mobility), an just when I
started out on this journey my landlord in their wisdom decided to
Update all 74 houses here on the sheltered housing complex I stay in here in
Stirling, Scotland..

As The Eagles would say.. ..it's a long, long road.. with many a winding
turn..!! Boy am I sure lookin' forward to it's end..

Snip [...The rig has worked great since it was completed..]

Well, I came to join the Elecraft Brother And Sisterhood, kinda late in
the proceedings, I had heard about the rig, and all the wonderful things
It was supposed to be capable of doing then join the family here on the
reflector.. Been here ever since, what a Wonderful family to be part of
For sure, never in the history of my Ham Career have I been so privileged
to be part of such a wonderful bunch of folks, ..can't ever ... see me
Leavin'..

Snip ...I have incorporated the various mods (new crystals, latest firmware
etc)and accessories KSB2, KAT2, KIO2, KNB2, KAF2, K160RX. The rig and the
KPA100 and KAT100.. have served me well and should for years.

Yip..! Got All That Still To Come..! I really hope that when the day comes
and she's all complete and ready to go that I too am fortunate enough to
Have that experience,.. for me building the K2 WAS..Building The Dream.. a
boyhood dream from the tender age of 11 years, all I wanted to do was
build one of those radio's like the radio ham's do and have my own
shack, ...talk to AMERICA nothing else mattered (and still doesn't),
here we are 17 lightening fast years down the line, and I have managed to
fulfil that dream in so many ways..

1: Became A Ham in February 1990, same day I moved independently into my
first home of which I am still living in at present ..

2: Speak/Spoke to AMERICA nearly every day since including during the
sunspot decline and minimum on the HF bands, made literally thousands (or
could it be millions..!) of friends around the world, not only in AMERICA
but from All 4 Corners Of The World..278 Countries To Date to be exact..

3: BUILT One Of Those Radio's Like The Radio Ham's Do.! Then duly bought
another one from Wayne Eric (still to be built)..!

4: Here we are 17 years later and Still learning and enjoying this wonderful
hobby we are all so blessed to be part of..

5: Only Thing left to do .. is Get Them Finished..! (which I'm working
on.!)

Life couldn't be sweeter..! (Unless of course I lived in AMERICA or Alaska
with Multi-Band 100 Foot Towers.. 1 or 2KW (at my disposal..!)
AND if only I had learned electronics and Ohms law ..much MUCH..earlier in
my life, and was better at construction that I am today..

Thanks for sharing your little insight into your Journey Steve with the
Elecraft K2, you have given me and probably countless others around the
World tonight the inspiration to go on and get the job done..

To all those folks that have been and are waiting patiently on the day when
they finally receive their K3's be patiend..

..Our Day Will Come..

Hope to work you along with each and everyone of our fellow Elecrafter
brothers n sisters someday soon, when my health and schedule permit me to
Melt More Solder I know there are folks out there just waiting in
anticipation on that day..

To Wayne, Eric, our very own Mr Elecraft Don Wilhelm W3FPR, Tom Hammond
N0SS...all the Crew at San Aptos..each and everyone that has helped
Me along the way...

Y'all Listen Out For ...ME.. Ya Hear..

[Elecraft] Elecraft EC Blank Enclosures (KX1..?)

2007-08-25 Thread Andy - GM0NWI

Guy's.. or Wayne\Eric even...

Does anyone know if there is an above subject line enclosure available from
the bhoys at Elecraft for
The KX1 ..?? Or is this gonna happen in the future..?

Seems to me that with having matching project enclosures for the K1 and K2
already (and K3 blank enclosures
Hopefully coming in the near future ...or here already), that it would be
nice to have something available in the size of the KX1 also...

Enquiring Minds need to know...from Beautiful Minds..out there..

[Elecraft] Project Knobs

2007-07-30 Thread Andy - GM0NWI

Hello to everyone in the group from Bonnie Scotland..

I am currently tryin' to source some 2 inch - 2 1/4 inch diameter knobs for
a project that will be gettin' undertaken in
The near future..

I am in need of 3 sets of 3 (9 knobs in total) I think.. although this may
not be case as I progress
But better I think to plan ahead..

Can anyone on the list give any details of a supplier, ..or possibly some
ideas from a what type of older
Radio's in the past might have had this sort of diameter of knobs
included..?

Think VFO -Tuning Dial sort of diameter.. and you'de near a ball-part
figure/size..

Has anyone in the past home-brewed this size and diameter of knob for a past
project..? If so, care to share how you
Did it..?

I've looked around the internet are lots of places, and there just does'nt
seem to be anyone out there who stocks
This sort of thing, both here in the UK and the US and further afield..

Really would appreciate help or ideas on this one folks..

TIA..

[Elecraft] Elecraft K1, KX1, K2, K2/100 AND K3

2007-07-27 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Hello Good People..!

I just HAD to add my 2p/2c worth to this one..

Speaking primarily as a guy who has been involved in radio as a Window To
The Outside World..and a disabled operator
In a wheelchair, where radio IS his life.. for communication, pleasure and
the HIM the umpteenth Wonder Of The World..!

I don't given a rat's ***..! What the ANY of the Elecraft stuff does or
does'nt do..!

PERIOD..!

For me the description on Wayne Eric's equipment when we all firstly came
across this outstanding achievement both
Personally (for them as radio hams, engineers, enthusiasts .. and people who
had a goal..!) it say's it ALL for me..

For a boy who uses his radio as a medium which for the most part far out
seeds the normal guy on the block, and who
Since the first day of his birth has had to fight to stay alive, .. and had
a Boyhood Dream since the age of 11
..to build a radio.. like those radio ham guy's have ...and talk to the
world..

AND I DID IT..! TWICE.. (Elecraft K2 S/n 01432 Elecraft K2 S/n 05469).. so
for me, they have fulfilled EVERY DREAM
I have ever had to be as good as the next guy, be noticed in the crowd..
That.! to me is worth more than all the
Money in the world - more than words can ever say..

NO Mean Feat Of Achievement I can assure you, with all the physical and
neurological problems that I have had since
Birth.. and that's NOT taking away ANYTHING from each and everyone of us
here on the list, who undertook and ACHIEVED
The very same thing...

These guy's (may) (may not) be the best in their fields, ..that is NOT for
us to Discuss, Ponder, or be Judge 'n Jury
On..

They have played with Something Old (Ham Radio), Something Borrowed
(possibly some of their idea's).. and Something
New (the drive for those of use who have lost it - to GET BACK INTO Ham
Radio - and that can ONLY be a good thing..they've
re-kindled old spirit - in EACH and EVERYONE of us..! They've even brought
the product(s) to our attention at a time where
we are pushing the boundaries of electronics WORLDWIDE, with many changes
going on around us, that we have no control over
and incorporated some of this technology into their products..

.FOR EACH AND EVERYONE.. OF..US..!

They've even possibly played with Something Blue too.. (think teeth).. Who
know's what lies ahead in the coming months -
Years from The Bhoys In San Aptos, they've certainly made their mark, made
themselves known with a BIG Bang..! NO ONE
Can doubt that..

Everyone's talkin' about Elecraft.. It's more talked about even, than the OJ
Trial..!

They kept their secret weapon a secret..! We had no idea, so gentlemen,
what can we expect ? Yes, they listened-in on
Us here on the reflector for all that time, but NON OF US..knew.. Knew what
was going on behind the scenes ..we still don't
(think Linears).. But one thing's for sure, ..they came thru and they came
thru BIG TIME.. And as you all are aware too I'm
Sure.. THEY'LL DO IT AGAIN.!

So, why don't we all just sit back wait and see what the delivery date(s)
bring us, and BE THANKFUL for what we have in such
A professional, dedicated, hard-working, generous, LISTENING team in ALL
those at Elecraft..! There will be plenty time for
us to wish for more, Bigger, better, more personalised things to come..

Don't let things, get into a how-deep-are-your-pockets
can-YOU-afford-this-I-CAN scenario..!

For the meantime, ..Enjoy..! What has been done here, ..for EACH and
EVERYONE of US, and for those who have yet To See The
Light and join our illustrious family..

All Things Come To Those Who Wait..

Wayne, Eric.. Everyone down there, ..THANKYOU for all you have given us..

[Elecraft] K3 Bits n Pieces (Builders Corner)

2007-06-05 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Guy's..

Sorry to be a Pain-In-The-***..

But just wondering, that now that the K3 has been officially launched...
When would it be appropriate
For the builders-constructors amongst our fraternity, to be able to contact
Elecraft and equire about
parts I guess you would call them...???/

You know.. Blank K3 Cabinets, Feet, Bail-Stands and the like.. Infact just
about anything K3 related
That you guy's will hopefully make available to us, which we can use to
construct our own kits etc,
Or add to an existing project to finish it off..

Again, sorry if this question has been already asked recently, I just
returned today from a stay
In our local hospital so are a bit behind on the proceedings...

Perhaps Wayne or Eric could answer this one for both myself and others on
the list..???

[Elecraft] Elecraft K3 HF Transceiver .. And.. Spare Parts .??

2007-04-28 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Wayne, Eric And The Crew...

You guy's just ROCK My World..! I know..I speak for everyone here on the
list when I say that also... I was fortunate enough to see
The original post from you this morning Wayne (doing some late night
web-ferreting)..

Won't keep you long..just wanted to ask primarily as a constructor, will you
guy's be also making available to us things like
Blank matching K3 enclosures, knobs, buttons, carry-handles (nice feature)
etc etc... In the same way as you currently do with most
Of the previous Elecraft kits..??

Also.. Does the K3 have a tilt-Stand feature..? I personally enquired
about the possibility of these becoming available as parts
To Lisa a few weeks back, and can now understand why that question went
un-answered..! No Worries there, Enquiring-Minds just would
Like to know..

Infact, will there be spares available for just about anything to do with
the K3..?? and possibly the Amps when they become
Available..?? Thats the basic question here..??

Anyway, what an outstanding job you have all done for us here in the world
of ham radio, and also the QRP Fraternity for sure Wayne..
Sit back and let the Kudos flood in my friend, then after take a well earned
rest from the onslaught.. You and the crews achievements are well
Appreciated and well deserved you have all worked diligently hard on
Building The Dream and making it a reality..!

Well Done, .. Thankyou for taking Ham Radio to another level..

P.S. When can we expect to see info on the website, and when will any future
Rev.A manuals be available for general download..??

[Elecraft] 1966 Year Of QST Volumes

2007-04-26 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Guy's...

Recently saw a post from someone on one of the lists selling a bound volume
of I think QST's...

Just wondering, as we are all a bit nostalgic with one thing or another, I
was born in ZL on
May 1st 1966 and would like to try and find out where one would actually
find the complete
Year of 1966 QST magazines as a collection together..

Is there a CD\DVD available somewhere that would give this... or is it just
merley down to folks having
the volumes complete from that era...??

What about price of these things..how does that go ...

Any info would be appreciated...

[Elecraft] Nominating Don Wilmelm for QRPer of Year?

2007-03-20 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Doc et al...

Ya Got My Vote On That For Sure..! All The Way From Bonnie Scotland

Over the years, there have been many people of differing distinguished and
not so distinguished levels... that we As the admirers put in high places
in society and the world over...

President Lincoln
Nelson Mandela
Dr. Martin Luther King
Elvis The King Presley
Bob Dylan
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Neil Armstrong

To name but a few... I'm sure folks will join us here and add their own
names to the list.. All these folks in their Respective individual
callings have brought to us enjoyment, Wisdom, Love, Peace And Harmony..
and above all Understanding of things that they seem to have a natural
ability for and we struggle to comprehend...
the chosen ones, who seem to have been Put here amongst us on Earth for a
purpose...

I can truly say, that although YES, there is no argument, those before who
have been indicted into The Hall Of Fame
For their outstanding achievements and contributions to this wonderful hobby
that we are SO blessed and humbled to be Part of, deserve each and every one
of their achilades,...

Don Wilhelm is by far in my mind the sole person, who I would\will vote for
if ever there comes a way of us mere Subjects doing so, to entry into the
Hall Of Fame,...

You summed it up exactly for us ALL Doc when you said . probably most
of us have benefitted from Don's selfless and likely unselfconscious
donations to our hobby through the years, both online and directly...

I am TOTALLY ashamed to admit nearly over 5 years I have had K2 S/n 01432
now, ... and she's STILL not finished,..like most Of us, life has taken me
in a different direction lately, the road has been very... rocky... but I
know that soon, when I Get back to the soldering iron, that Don and his ever
helpful self will be there, just waiting in the wings, for those fallen
Comrades in help of a friendly face and hand.. (Hope your listenin Mr
Wilhelm... there may be trouble ahead..!)

Just my 2 cents\ pennies worth... Hope someone can get this underway. The
numbers add up both here on the list and out there In the ether.. Without
his and folks like Tom Hammonds help, the QRP Fraternity would'nt be the
same...

Elecrafts products ARE 2nd-To-Non... THEY have set the standard... the
others to take suite and try to follow...
Don and the boys contributions and friendship just make the experience even
more enjoyable and worthwhile for us all..

God Bless You Don and ALL The Un-sung Hero's Out There... We Need You

[Elecraft] Norcal Sierra - Wilderness Radio Sierra - Dans Small Parts

2007-03-10 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
Guys'..

Let's see if we can sort the mess in my head ...

Thinkin of building the Sierra (from that famous QRP'er and constructor we
all know and love..) later on in the year..

I have (if I can find it) a manual for ..a Sierra.. transceiver, I think
it's the Norcal version... but not sure..

What I need to get straight in my tiny mind is-:

1.. Are the Norcal Sierra and the Wilderness Radio Sierra the SAME BEAST
in ALL WAYS or SOME WAYS..?

2.. Are they a totally different beast...?

3.. Should I order the boards from Dans Small Parts and source the
parts..?

4.. if I were to order the parts from Dans, would I eventually end up with
virtually the same radio as the Norcal
Sierra version of the radio or are there differences...?

5.. Could I use the manual for constructing a Dans version of the radio,
that I need to still find here...?

The Wilderness Sierra is usually the way I would go on things like this,
but like most of us, there are a LOT of projects
getting done here in the shack at the moment, so money is an issue for the
initial outlay.. Sourceing the parts (if the boards
from Dan's would make me end up with virtually the same radio as the
Wilderness Sierra version) would DEFINATLEY be the way I
would go this time... After all sourcing parts is half the fun ..right..!?

In the end if I needed for some reason, technically, or from the point of
a constructor, to order the complete kit from
Wilderness Radio instead, this would be a big financial outlay for me at
this point so would have to wait..

I hear y'all say there is always the ARRL version with templates.. Dare I
ask... is this yet a 3rd version of a different
Beast... ?? All of the above questions I suppose will bring many varied
answers, but I would appreciate someone who can
explain this to me like a kid in diapers..

Can you guys please help me resolve this problem that I've admittedly had
for some time now.. You guys have an uncanny way
of solving most problems I have had over the years so I have every faith in
y'all..

Hope I've explained my predicament properly..

Here Goes..
GO..!

[QRP-L] Re: [Elecraft] Norcal Sierra - Wilderness Radio Sierra - Dans Small Parts

2007-03-10 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
.. not such an Important Thing within the
proceedings is it..!!! I am told that the manual
For both the Norcal version of the radio AND the manual (of
sorts here..) from Far Circuits both could be a little
More clearer on things, and as yet as folks are aware NOT been
updated or re-written yet...

SO..! with ALL of the above points in mind... I think that the plan will be,
as it had been a few years back, milling around in my
tiny little head, that the purchase of either the basic Wilderness
Sierra version of the radio will be for me at the least and time
Being.. the way to go.. Complete kit (if I want it), parts ready available,
better quality circuit boards, components, a better written
More precise and clear manual, AND a Guarantee ... Things kinda swings in
its favour for me with these points alone..

NOT ! To say, that I won't venture sometime through my ham career and try my
hand at a sierra from some other source, either parts only with my doing
the rest of the work, or perhaps even buying the Norcal Sierra version..
But for the time being, when I have
Finally saved up all my pennies\cents I think the way to go for me will be
the purchase of some sort of Wilderness Radio Sierra
Kit..

I would just like to say, a resounding THANKS GUYS to one and all who took
the time to read my plea and respond respectively...each
And every one of your comments, both for and against have been duly noted...
Again it just goes to show, that the QRP Fraternity, is
Alive n Kickin with all its mite... and that within amateur radio as a hobby
worldwide on a whole.. we have some of best and most
Knowledgable people who can share their knowledge and experience in a
helpful, unbiased, experienced manner...

With that, I thank you again.. I will no doubt post again as an when I
actually purchase the Sierra kit and keep you all informed of its
Progress, I've admired that little radio from the first day I saw it all
those many years ago, with the help and experience that you
Guys have shared with me and everyone here on the list over the last few
days, I can say that I am much more wiser and confident of the
way ahead...

[Elecraft] WTB: Heathkit SB-300 SB-301 SB-303 SB- 401 Parts - More Info

2007-03-05 Thread Andy GM0NWI
Guy's...

Hello Again Folks From Bonnie Scotland...

Re: My post to the list yesterday regarding my need for some parts from Old
Heathkit equipment..

Just incase there is any confusion...

I am looking for ONLY the Case\Enclosure and the inside Chassis of one Of
the above pieces of equipment... I am not currently looking to purchase
A fully loaded example of these radio's...

I am currently undertaking a new project.. which still has a ways to go
before completion, so a case\enclosure and chassis would help no-end with
the final Accomplishment...

Let me say a HUGE Thankyou to everyone that has taken the time so far... to
post Both the list and personally to me with things that they have found
while surfin The net..

I however have still to find an example either of the parts that I need and
still need to purchase these items...

I have looked previously at some other older models of Heathkit equipment on
the
Well known auction site we all know and love... However I feel and have
decided
That the enclosure\case(s) from the above model(s) are more suited to the
project
I am about undertake therefore don't feel that any other type\kind of
Heathkit
Enclosure would suite my needs...

So again let me remind you all .. if there is anyone out there that has or
knows of anyone who may have these above pieces lying around.. surplus to
requirements, and wants to sell.. please contact me OFF list directly at the
e-mail address below.. then perhaps we can do a deal...

 Hi Keith,
One of the neatest tools I have, which I don't think was
mentioned is a little gizmo that my daughter gave me as a
gift a good number of years. I'm not sure what its called or
if it still sold, maybe some of the guys on this list can
steer you as to where to get one. My daughter got it at
Radio Shack and paid about $10.00 back then

Anyway it's a little plastic thing that an IC can fit into.
You know how the pins are aren't straight down on an IC and
you sort of have to press them against a table top to get
them all lined up? Well with this 'thing'
you just put the IC into the groove and squeeze the sides of
he contraption and presto! ...straight pins that can be
placed into the PC board of your K2 (Don't use sockets, BTW)

It has two sides which can be used and accommodates both
'regular' size IC's and the larger ones.

If any out THERE knows what I'm talking about and can steer
 Keith in the right.

At any rate, enjoy your K2 and savor every minute of building it

 Hey folks,

I have some tools but will need more for the K2. I have a
 Weller WTCPT
(or whatever it is) soldering station with two tips. Both
 have a 7 on
the bottom (700 degree?). One is the original and one is a very thin
 pointy tip.

I have a static mat, a clear bench and a workable light.

I'm thinking I need the following and wonder if there is a preferred
place to get them at a fair price?
   - Solder
   - Small side cutters
   - Small needle nose pliers
   - Other tips for the weller
   - Helping hands parts holder
   - Solder braid (for desoldering)

I have access to a vacuum desolder station so if things get
 bad I can go
 that route.

Where should I get these things? What else do I need?

[Elecraft] Nickel Plateing

2006-01-04 Thread Andy GM0NWI

Guy's..

Just wanted to ask,...

Does anyone on the list, know of a company in the the US, where I could
enquire about having an item here in the shack (UK), re-nickel plated..?

The item is, a 1924 Vibroplex Code Martin Junior morse key, bought by
myself on that site that can't be mentioned..

I've spent the best part of a year of my life, restoring this key, back to
just about fully working order, although not a patch on the restorations (I
dont think so anyway) of our very own Chuck Adams K7QO, I'm very pleased
with my results for a first time tryin'
my hand at a resoration project.

There are some who would say, leave it as is, and others who say yep,
that'll be nice when shineing againbelieve me, I have been tossing with
both ideas for about a year now...after all you guys saying such things..!
I wondered in the beginning if the key COULD
indeed be restored, but with a little bit of patience, and a LOT of time,
it is once again nearly fully functional as it was intended
for back in 1924, all parts that were stuck fast are now free, and working
as they should be, ...the only thing is cosmetics really,..

I feel that parts of the key could do, with some restoration on the
nickel-plating side, as it wont be going anywhere in a hurry, and will stay
in my possession, so I think its worth spending the money to have it done.

I have looked over the net, but don't have any idea from the names seen, as
to who might be interested in the job, mainly as the job will probably be
seen as small lot..

SO..! if there is anyone out there on the list who knows of such a company
that might be interested in a small lot job, or indeed someone who has in
the past gotten this done to one of their own keys, say a ham out there
willing to help me (i.e an address to send the key and some payment to where
upon the subsequent ham could get the job done, and then send the key back
to me in the post (paid by myself of course) , or indeed a ham who can
help themselves with the key through experience, please can you let me know.

[Elecraft] WTD: Hi-Mound BK-100 Manual

2005-05-09 Thread Andy GM0NWI

Guy's

Was at a rally this weekend in the town of Irvine (Scotland). Picked up
one of the above keys, in good shape, for the fantastic sum of ?10.00
(British Pounds) at the bring n buy/junk sale seems to be all in
working order, the key came with a supplied length of power lead and
jack.also came with the plastic top clear see-through cover, although
this seems in need of a little attention (looks like someone has tried to
clean the cover in the past with some sort of scourer...leaving the
plastic a little frosted looking).

Was wondering if anyone has a manual for this little babe...?I'm new to
bug type keys of any kind, and not sure on how to set her up for operation
properley would also like to check out that there are no defective, or
missing parts

All costs will be reinburst

Re: [Elecraft] K1 3-digital display specs

2005-04-28 Thread Andy GM0NWI

Tom ..et al...

DOES.. from what I think I understand from the recent postings... mean
that in theory,...
one could purchase the digital display unit, on its own...from Elecraft, or
the other company
that was specified... and then proceed to homebrew a digi display for
use in other rig

projects..??

Of course,...there would need to be some sort of Driver board I suppose,
and perhaps a

few other boards to boot...!

Wonder if anyone on the list, has actually put together somedriver and
other boards that would allow a digital display to be made for use in
homebrew radios and equipment using this unit...?

VERY Interesting...! Indeed if I have this all correct in my head...
(I'm new at this..)

By The Way Tom... The cd you so kindly sent me, arrived about a week or so
after you posted it.. can't remember if I e-mailed you or not... apologies
if I did'nt... It came in very handy for my

and the 3rd... The Birth Of My Elecraft K2 S/n 01432..!

Oh..! Yes...! . as the man himself Mr Elvis Aron Presley ...sang
about many, many a time in my room at home... I Got My Mojo Working...
 And BOY IT FEELS GOOD..!!
Now I KNOW...what all the talk has been about on the reflector, HF Bands,
magazinesetc for the last 5 years of my life...

What a truly Monumentous occassion happened here today...! Some of you
guy's will remember earlier in the week, where I posted to the reflector...
that there had indeed been a hiccup in the construction of my Baby...
... with the Alignment Test Past II section of the manual, and I was
admittedly strugglin' with the way of the manual, shall we say, ..not
knowing wether I was actually doing the correct proceedure for alignment on
the 40M Band...(in and around Page 50)...

Well... Once Again... my dear friend, mentor...and...close friend John
Ross GM1BSG...has again (...keep readin' John..!) Saved The Day... From
the outset of the beginning of the construction of K2 S/n 01432
(...yeah..I know..its layen in a cupboard t... long..!)... John has been
an absolutley monumentally oustanding rock for me throughout all of
this... the man is a pure genius...a fantastic friend, shoulder to cry
on the whole shootin' match... When others all around me, constantly
said, ..you'll never do that Andy...your not good enough... John...
helped me rise above it all...with his kind words, determination, and
sheer bloody-mindedness,... telling me that he Knew...! that I could do
it.. ...I thought he was lying or just sayin that to help me along,...but
today, it all fell into place..and now I beleive him...Without HIM...I CAN
say, that I would still be scratching my head on this one, with the only
thing to do backtrack through the manual...which we did to a certain
extent, but nothing like I would have needed to do on my own if he were'nt
here..

Today, we connected up some Serious test equipment, I'll leave John to
explain the finer points of that and quickly found the problem...

What Was I Hear Y'all Say...?? In a word

ME...

Dumb-%^*...! here had forgotten in my wisdom, to include a couple of
very important componants during the last few pages before puttin her
together for the Big Smoke Test...! R39 and another componant...on the
back left-hand-side of the RF Board...which of course, allowed me to
tune the various filters, even for 40m...but was stopping the rig from
receiving ...ANYTHING !! on 40m...
a quick read of the schematic (by John..!) and a scan of the board, brought
this to our attentionWhere I ..hastily made a quick retreat to the
kitchen...! ...and I'm NOT joking...!! How small once again did I feel
for the 2nd time this week.?? Another small problem that I seemed to have
had, was with some switching of the 40m filter, this turned out to be
Toroid T5 or T6 which I had orientated in the wrong direction..!
making it act, kinda like a choke or attenuator (or so john
explained..!) this was b.a.d. ... as you can imagine, attenuating, so to
speak the signals on 40m...

Must have been one of those moments of madness, ...where I had visited other
rooms in the house for a moment and forgotten on returning where I was
at...or perhaps what I was partaking in at the time...

I've learned my lesson for sure...

But it did raise a few eyebrows. and ...temperatures..! I can tell
you, when John found out what had happened infact,..he has made sure
that I NEVER apply for a job at his satellite business, where they undertake
the fabrication of satalite receivers, LMB's etc etc...EVER..!! (...aye
John..?)

A quick change around of the toroid, a solder of the 2 componants that I had
ommited to install... BANG..! There they weresignals 5-5, 5-7, 5-9
...all on 40m CW..!!

Fanfare Plays In The Background...! Oh..! Joyess Moment...! ...and nearly
tears of happiness all around

SO..! Glad to say that K2 S/n 01432 is now receiving stations on 40m
CW...Boy Its Good..!.. Still got a couple of problems to sort out,... Like
WHY..the S-Meter is still sitting at S3 of constant... when there is nothing
to be heard on the band...or any stations on a particular frequency
Suppose I'll come across why later in the manual... perhaps a tweak still
to be done...?? Also not sure..why I can't resolve LSB on 40m too good...

[Elecraft] Elecraft K2 S/n 01432 ...Alignment Question 40M Onwards...

2005-04-19 Thread Andy GM0NWI

Guys...

For the last few days, on an off..I have been attempting my first time
...ever...with the alignment of my (at the moment) basic CW K2...

I have tried as far as I can see, to do the 40m Aligment proceedure from
Page 57 onwards in my manual... I followed the linerization proceedure as
per the manual for 40 meters... here's my FIRST question

Question 1 ... ...Does the constructor ...have to do the linerization
step that is carried out for 40M only (or so the manual states at that
stage) ...for the rest of the bands installed..?

In other words, do I need to do the linerization step for EACH of the
bands.. Particularly when setting up the BFO and FILTER(s) on CW and
CW/Reversed...?

I did NOT do the linerization step for ANY of the other bands, only once
per the manual for 40m ...where I did receive all the correct information on
the rig's digital display...

As for the BFO and FILTER Alignment, in the steps of the manual
afterwards... I followed the instructions, pressing the relevent buttons
when asked... and all that I did really there, was just make sure that the
digital frequency display ...showed exactly what was in the manual at that
stage...I did that for ALL the bands, ..adjusting only the VFO knob...to
make sure my display read for each BFO and FILTER reading per
band...what was in the manual...

Question 2... ... WAS this the correct proceedure to do for the above part
in the manual...did I get the steps correct... Yeah I KNOW it says so in
the manual...but Hey Guy's this is the first time ever in my life, that I
have done this sort of thing so as well as being unsure what to do, and
unsure wether I have followed things correctly,..obviously I was airing on
the side of caution as not to do any damage at this point in particular,
that would need to be un-done by my elmer John Ross GM1BSG

After doing all that I have mentioned I moved onto around Page 61 and
proceeded to do the next part of the alignment stage, as far as I could
anyway... I followed the proceedure regarding turning L34 with the tuning
tool providedsetting the digital frequency display up as mentioned in
my manual...

I DID hear the generated tone at the bottom of 40m...

SO..proceeded to do what the manual asked... and peak for MAXIMUM
SIGNAL...and MINIMUM NOISE...on 40M ONLY... which I seemed to have
achieved... At this point I have to point out that I was NOT hearing any
stations on 40m while or during this aligment only the test tone

The final part of my plea to y'all is this...

Near the end of Page 61... the manual asks the constructor to peak or
turn.L1 and L2 for peak signal strength... and use the K2's S-meter
for this purpose to see when things are at their maximum peak...

Question 3... In this step I have to report that I DID NOT..see much of a
signal peak here at all... and also...that during ALL of the above story
... I WAS NOT..hearing ANY stations AT ALL on 40m..only noise...and
the generated test tone...

Question 4... IS THIS NORMAL..?? Or do I have a problem..??

My thoughts were that I should be hearing stations on 40m by now...
atleast..?? Perhaps not...

One last thing to mention...is that back in the manual... Just before
putting the componants on the RF Board near the back left hand side of the
board... I WAS getting my digital display to light up... After doing that
part of the manual...and continuing to my present position... carrying on
with the alignment section.. I can now report that for some reason I
don't seem to be getting a light on the digital display anymore...

Could this be mearly due to the wire jumpers that were installed a few
pages back, by-passing the parts of the circuit to allow the display to
light..?? Hopefully all of this stuff...is nothing to worry about ...

We'll just have to wait n see.. Your thoughts are duely welcomed guy's...
Thanks For The Bandwith...

[Elecraft] OT:The NJQRP Manhattan Homebrewing Starter Kit

2005-04-13 Thread Andy GM0NWI

Guy's... Apologies for the Off Topic request...

I was just surfin' around...on the net a few moments ago and found
myself on the American QRP Club website ...lookin' at all the past and
present kits they have/had available...

After the hopefully not so far away,..completion of my K2..I am hopein
(...late as it always is in my case) to have a goat the Manhatten Style
Construction thing.. I unfortunatley missed the
run of the kits that were done to get folks startedon this way of
construction dunno what I'll do there for parts etc ...will need to
cross that bridge when I come to it...

In the meantime...I was wondering if anyone on the list ..possibly has a
copy either in electronic format...or one that theywould'nt mind scanning
for me of the Manhatten-Style Homebrewing Guide

that is talked about at the link below...??

http://www.njqrp.org/starterkit/index.html

It seems to be quite comprehensive (says its 20 pages or so of info)...so as
a starter point for myself ...I would'nt mind having a look at this... and
perhaps later will re-post for any of the starter kits that folks may have
lying around that they would like to part with..or cant see themselves
gettin around to actually using in the near future...

For the meantime...has anyone got any way of letting me have a copy of the
guide (Manual thingy..!) on the website linke above..?

Thanks guys...what a great bunch of boys...

P.S. Hope I get some of this K2 Mojo when Im finished my kit that
everyone is talking about..!

[Elecraft] Elecraft K2 S/n 01432...The Saga Continues...

2005-04-12 Thread Andy GM0NWI

Guy's...

Here we are again...hours after my last post to the group...! Well.. would
just like to say a BIG Thankyou to all of
you who replied to my previous e-mail...regarding the screws n things, that
seemed to be fitted in the wrong orientation,..

on my Baby K2 here...

I took the advice on-board ...changed the screws around (..think it would be
180 degrees..!) and things in that department
turned out fine...I managed to mate ALL 3 boards together, to continue
with the alignment process from Page 57 onwards in the manual...

Here's the story so far...!

Have done all of the above...and was just about to go ahead and try the rest
of the alignment, when I thought..wait a minute...the rig should turn
on now..as before ..and if I don't hear anything... well...it SHOULD turn
on though.. ..RIGHT..??

Well...unfortunatley for me... I can't seem to get her to turn on (...he
says...smilin to himself...with a cough..!)...I've put all the relevant side
panels, front panel etc onto the rig,..plugged the rig into my 30 AMP shack
PSU as before...

Pressed the ON Switch...waited for the EEPROM to do it's thing...
NOTHIN..!!!

No Display...
No Rig Noise...
No Frequency Display ...

I CAN hear the relays click as I press the ON switchthere does'nt seem
to be any burning smell or smoke emmitting from the rig at this time
tried this several times ..with the same results... NOTHING..!

On power up ...I've noticed heat emmitting from the rig...as if shes
tryin'...and Q22 on the RF Board DOES..heat up..dunno if this is meant to
happen...but could feel the heat coming off it from inside the rig...

Any ideas anyone...

[Elecraft] Elecraft K2 S/n 01432 Construction Update..

2005-04-12 Thread Andy GM0NWI

Guy's..

Just to let everyone who WILL see my e-mail on the reflector soon from this
morning...

To IGNORE...the plea for help...! Time has passed today, since posting
that e-mail to the reflector...
the day is nearing closure... ONCE AGAIN..! My well respected
.Elecraft K2 Elmer ...John Ross GM1BSG..

saved the day...!

On inspection of the rig (...a little closer than I had actually done while
constructing her early this morning...) it was
noticed, ...found... corrected... that I had INDEED...not mated the
connector pins from one of the boards to the

connector on the RF Board quite correctly...!!

sigh..! blinks in disbelief..! Yes..! indeed...the whole episode of
panic..was for no reason whatsoever... and
this was the reason as to my baby not turning on and lighting up this
morning..!!

I can now say WITH convictions...! that I feel rather stupid...and small
for overseasing this foresight..! With a fresh
pair of eyes and a much better logical mind... John...actually noticed that
this was indeed the problem... Without ALL
3 boards,...being mated together properly of course things will NOT
function as they should..!!

Here is one happy Elecrafter for sure... All that remains now is to go
ahead and fine tune the section for letting her

sing on 40m...!

Thanks to everyone who has and who probably will still...see the earlier
e-mail to the reflector... your comments are still welcome as they may help
others...but I for one are well on the road to the final success and so far,
barring this oversight
on my partALL stages have went very smoothly and much better than first
anticipated...

Thanks for the help guysand the bandwidth... Watch this Space...!

[Elecraft] Elecraft K2 S/n 01432 Alignment And Test Part II Question...

2005-04-11 Thread Andy GM0NWI

Guy's..

I've just completed the above part on my K2 All tests seemed to
go according to plan.

Keepin' my fingers crossed...! SO..! Should Y'all for me ...!!

My Question...

On completing the test(s) up to an around Page 50 something in the
manual... I proceeded to put my
baby back together again in preperation for the next part in the manual...
Only to find...that when I tried to
mate the Front Panel board, with the Control Board...things, don't
want to go back together as planned...!

The problem I think ...is that now the RF Board is more populated with
componants, and there is a tuning can
in componant placement L34 on the RF BoardWHEN ..! I try to mate
the Control Board onto the given
connectors, the screws that hold the 2 transistors in position(s) U5
and U4 respectivley..protrude out too far
from their nuts..thus inhating the placement of the Control Board onto the
connectors on the RF Board...

I (am) ...sorta sure that I got this part correct ..way back in the
manual... and used the correct screws to hold the
transistors on the Control Board as was statedbut for some reason I
can't help but think that the screws used are
either 1... Too Long (i.e not the correct ones to use)2... Orientated
with their threads instead of their heads on the

Control Board

Can someone please point me in the correct direction of where I might have
gone wrong... I've asked advice on this
previously and understand what I was told... that was just to turn the
screws around so that the heads lay on the transistors,
from the componant side and protruded out the solder side of the Control
Board... if this is the case, will I need to do any

reverse stuff with the washers for each transistor...??

Thanks guys for the bandwidth.

How...is this done on the website in the View Cart ...Check Out

WITHOUT ACTUALLY ORDERING AT THE MOMENT..??

I.E . making a dummy run to try an assertain what the eventual cost
would be..?

On the Elecraft website, (from as far as I can see)...when a user tries to
do a dummy run...I think that you may end upactually placing an
order...and I dont

want to do that just yet...

[Elecraft] OT Apologies:WTD: TRIO/KENWOOD TS930S Service Manual

2005-02-28 Thread Andy GM0NWI

Guy's..! Apologies again for this OT enquiry

Wondering if anyone can help with this one... A local ham friend...has just
bought one of the afore mentioned radio's privatley
there seems to be a problem with the rig on one of the HF bands (15m I
think..although not certain..), where the rig exibits a problem with some
sort of
audio feedback problem when transmitting... Reports from other ham's
...say.the rig sounds as if there is either feedback of sorts...
or a scratchy sound distorting the transmitted audio the local ham
tells me that these reports seem only to be occuring on 15m...

with all other bands being as is...

Wondering..does anyone have a copy of the Service Manual for this radio,
..that they would like arrange something with me..to allow

my friend to be able to maybe track down the problem...

All enquires ...please to the e-mail address below...

[Elecraft] K2 S/n 01432 Power Connector ??

2005-02-10 Thread Andy GM0NWI

Guy's...

Just a quickie to make sure that I have this correct (or not as the case
maybe..!)

I am currently at the first stage of Power Up with my K2...
page 41 in the manual...

I have found what I think is the power connector...and also some
black and red lead wire from my junk box...

What I have done...is

Connect the RED wire to the SMALL pin on the connector (as this seems to
be the one going to the CENTRE pin)... and then the BLACK wire to the LONG
pin on the connector that I have here...

Is this the correct wiring for the Power Connector for the K2..??

[Elecraft] K2 S/n 01432 ..Side Panel Question..?

2005-02-08 Thread Andy GM0NWI

Guy's...

I'm currenly stuck fast...on a problem deciphering exactly what the K2
Manual means as regard the orientation of the 2-D fastners to the side
panels on page 37 ..

I have removed (as far as I can see..!) all the green masking tape from
the areas where it was stuck down to on the side panels (..on BOTH my side
panels..this is 2 areas rectangular in shape..on the bottom (horizonatal
plane) of each of the side panels)... there appears to be no other parts
that are masked .

On the drawing in the K2 Manual on page 37, the picture appears to show
3 areas of masking on each side panel... they are mirrored images of
each other, with masking in the top left on the horizontal plane of one
side paneland then on the top right on the horizontal plane of the
other panel... Also there is indication that the side panels have also
masking on the right hand side vertical plane...and also left hand
side vertical plane...

Thats if I am reading the drawing in the manual correctly..??

However MY panels do NOT have these areas masked at all..!! I only seem
to have 2 areas on each side panel masked ...and BOTH are on the
horizontal plane when mirrored against each other...

This is where the problem I am having comes in... I cant seem to get my
head around, which way to orientate the 2D fasteners onto the areas that I
have which were previously masked as they dont match up with the
drawings in my manual, as far as I can tell...

At the moment I have 1 2D fastener on EACH unmasked area on EACH
panel, the 2D fasteners are orientated vertically as apposed to the
side panels being horizontal... I feel that this may be the wrong way
to go...

Can someone please advise me as to the correct proceedure for mounting these
2D fasteners to their respective side panels, so I may carry on with the
next part in the manual...??

Thanks again guys.much appreciated

[Elecraft] RF Board Relays ..Help..!

2005-02-01 Thread Andy GM0NWI

Guy's...

Getting on with the K2 RF Board here .going together much better
than I antisipated...although I have workmen in the house here at the
moment...fitting a new bathroom suite and layout... SO..! at times its

hard to concentrate with all the noise...

Just wanted to enquire...

I am at the stage of the RF Board where one installs the relays onto the
RF Board,I have located the 2 PACKETS of relays I got with my K2...
What I would like to clarify is

On one of the tubes of relays there is a white label with the words KAT2
Relaysand other the other tube there is NO label...

As far as I can see...from the markings the relays are exactly the same in
nature all ways...(perhaps not..!)... Does it matter which ones I use for
the part in the RF Board that I am currently putting together..??

As for those wishing to follow my progress, slow as it has been over the
last year, with one thing and another... I will post some photographs on my
website as soon as the board is done...along with my thoughts on the
processAll comments would be greatly welcome...

Thanks again for the support throught this endeavour that I have
undertaken Without you guy's the process would be MUCH more dawnting...

[Elecraft] K2 S/n 01432 Back In Production..

2005-01-26 Thread Andy GM0NWI

Guy's...

Andy...GM0NWI...here in Stirling...Bonnie Scotland Firstly let me say
Happy New Year For 2005 to everyone on the list...I hope that the festive
season was as you expected...! And lets hope
that 2005 will be a much better year for everyone worldwide than the
previous one...

Just to let you all know...that if you HAD been following the GM0NWI K2 A
Man On A Mission series over the months last year...following my journey
in the construction of my Fully Loaded K2...you'll know already that I had
to stop constrcution for a while due to major House Refurbishment

Glad to say that ..2005 Brings Another Year.. and that the house
refurbishement...long as it was (way over due in completion)has finally
came to an end at the end of last year...! I had however to attend to the
finer points of it myself...and as you may or may not know...I require
some help in doin this due to my physical disability and bein confined to my
wheelchair..

I am however...postin' this note to y'all to let you know that as of today
(26/01/05)...I endeavour to start construction again of the rigand
therefore will hopefully be able to post regular updates to my progress
as we go along

IF anyone is interested in following the progress...same drill as before,
...I'll post to the list what I have done ...hopefully with some follow-up
pictures of my work

Looking forward to catchin' up with all you guys..! Feedback/Comments on
the K2 Mission.greatly appreciated

[Elecraft] G4ZPY Keys And The Man Himself

2004-06-14 Thread Andy GM0NWI
Guy's

Gonna' hopefully be purchasingyet another baby for my use an
collection

Always, ever since owning my first one, wanted another G4ZPY Keybut
never in all my years managed to quite get the funds together..!

A fellow Ham enquired the other day, about the existing model that I
have...and asked Is The Fellow Still About..? as my friend had never seen
any reference to Gordon or his magnificent CW Keys...! I must admit, I was
at a bit of a lose to answer

SO..! Was wonderingCAN anyone on the list please tell me if they know
(within the last 3 months or so) if Gordon is indeed trading... also,
because I can't seem to find his website, with the old link that I
have I've over the years, had MANY, MANY, chats with him about the
purchase of a key, and my requirements, but the last I heard he was not in
too good health

Would love to hear from anyone who knows the latest and PARTICULARLY from
anyone who has PURCHASED a key from Gordon in the last few months, with
their respective thoughts Don't think that my exisiting model is one of
the VHS models, but it sure is a fine instrument and manages to give my
Vibroplex Deluxe Iambic a run for it's money

Thanks..
