Re: [Flightgear-devel] Panel designers: feedback needed
I generally make 3d panels, but I find textranslate etc useful, indeed vital within these 3d instruments for example in HIS. I'm also using them for rain effects on canopies, so as far as I'm concerned the 2d panel stuff is still very much in use. (still trying to collect together all the feedback on this, so apologies if this is a bit confused, but:) Doesn't the animations system have a textranslate node as well? As far as I can see, the features the animation system is missing compared to the 2D panels is cropped textures (but maybe I've overlooked it?) and text, but there seems to be some other issues with the 2D text system, because, for example, Syd seems to use a sliding, cropped number texture for each digit in favour of an actual text +chunks node. (trying not to speak for Syd when he's away here) James OK holidaying is done ! 2 days driving on snow covered roads is enough for me :) As far as I knew the textranslate is a 3d feature , not a 2d panel feature. -- ___ Flightgear-devel mailing list Flightgear-devel@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/flightgear-devel
Re: [Flightgear-devel] Dots, degrees and magic '5's
So, it seems like at least Syd may have been assuming the deflection was in 'dots * 5' rather than 'degrees * 5' - I'd love Syd to confirm or deny that. The upshot of this is that the GS indicator in Primus is, **I think**, about 1/3rd as sensitive as it should be. However, I could easily be wrong about this, so I'll wait for Syd to offer his opinion. Comments on any of the above are welcome. Regards, James I think i assumed long ago that the GS deflection had a limit of -10 to 10 like the heading-needle-deflection , and so scaled the needle to the outermost dot accordingly. The manual states that in GS mode the vertical scale is in degrees , and captures at 0.5 degrees , and I'm assuming (again) , that each dot must represent 1 degree, since I havent come across exact numbers yet.In other words, my setup could be wrong, I'll have to research this more. -- ___ Flightgear-devel mailing list Flightgear-devel@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/flightgear-devel

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Dots, degrees and magic '5's
Further online searching turned up this This deflection corresponds to the direction the pilot must fly to intercept the glide path and is proportional to the angular displacement from the glide path angle. As with the localizer, the full scale deflection is 150 microamperes. Typically, the glide slope sensitivity is set so that the full-scale indications occur at approximately 2.3 and 3.7 degrees elevation. this is from http://www.ohio.edu/avionics/research/nav/ils/glideslope.cfm -- ___ Flightgear-devel mailing list Flightgear-devel@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/flightgear-devel
Re: [Flightgear-devel] Dots, degrees and magic '5's
Ok , Im getting closer...i think Another manual i have states min glideslope angle = 2.5 degrees , maximum = 3.25 degrees, so does that mean the needle animation range should be 0.25 at the upper second dot, and -0.5 for the bottom second dot ? Re: [Flightgear-devel] Dots, degrees and magic '5's
OK , so my needle animation is far too insensitive , but the needle deflection property shows 0 at dead center (3 degrees). What I was asking is what amount of deflection per dot the needle should move based on the existing property , so I'll go with 0.35 and try some approaches. Also, this has possibly been going on quite some time now (since I started reporting NaN bugs on my medium-haul flights), but in many cases, the METAR doesn't change the active wind and cloud settings unless I actually look at the METAR (Environment -- Weather Scenario). As soon as I close the dialog box, the clouds change, the KIAS moves suddenly, and the plane may rock side-to-side gently for a moment or two. *RARELY* I will notice the weather settings change on their own during flight, but it seems as if *USUALLY* it doesn't do so unless I look at the METAR. Second problem I ran into last night was starting at any airport with the DC-6 , everything was fine until I started the engines ... then the screen went black , dropped to 1 fps , and a steady stream of: CullVisitor::apply(Geode) detected NaN, depth=nan, center=(0.002885 0.0187575 -0.0095325), matrix={ nan nan nan nan nan nan nan nan nan nan nan nan nan nan nan nan } I kind of suspect with the second problem that it might be a badly configured yasim file... Here's what I think this needs, but perhaps I'm wrong: - the ability to populate a menu (of runways, in this case, but it could be anything) dynamically from a script / dialog-action - presumably from a Nasal array of strings, or a hash. - a way to run a dialog-action every time a text input field (for the airport ICAO code) receives a key-press, so I can keep trying to look up the airport and then populate the runways menu. I want this for the route-manager dialog, but I can imagine similar concepts being useful in the other places in the GUI - for example the 'position on ground' dialog could have the runway and parking position fields replaced with menus, avoiding having to guess the correct values. Hi , I decided to get brave and try terragear since my local airport in FG needs a lot of fixing. Are terragear and terragear-cs two separate programs ? Or which is under current development? Re: [Flightgear-devel] MP notes on breaking compatibility with previous versions of aircrafts....
Yes , I'm one of the culprits , and it's not a lack of foresight ,I've done it for a reason. MP is not my biggest concern , I did these aircraft for my own purposes , not entirely with gamers in mind ... but Im glad some like them all the same. These aircraft use one fuselage model now , with gear and other aircraft specific options selected depending on type or name, with cockpit and internals separated to be selected within a certain distance. So there IS no dhc2floats or dhc2wheels. It can be set so the model is visible with older versions ,by adding another animation xml file with those names and adding the neccesary ac model bits ,but in my opinion adds more garbage to the folder. I,ve been updating the dhc-2 for more realistic behavior, (sorry gamers);), so it's nearly ready for another commit, and I can add the old versions , but there's also the option of adding these to the AI/Aircraft .Any idea on which option we should take from the rest of the modellers ? (My problem with that is you end up with two aircraft to maintain, and I tend to forget about the AI version). The specific culprits today are Syd Adams (dhc2, for sure and dhc6 also, I think) and Gerard Robin (PBY-Catalina). There might have been more cases today, and I think we have a few more a/c in cvs who exhibit those symptoms :) I'm sure it was all unintentional and a simple lack of foresight on the consequences such changes might have, but there we have it. I'll fix the dhc-6 , but have to go back through cvs file to remember what the original names were . Im not crazy about people putting different verions of my aircraft on the forum as it kind of makes my work pointless , but it's bound to happen. I think I prefer to do it in the aircraft model folder rather than AI , since it will be easier to remember to remove when no longer needed. No , I have no problem with MP , it's a nice break to go flying and chat ... my point was I dont build these to impress gamers or specifically for MP, there are usually aspects of that aircraft I'm interested in.I dont mind helping out to fix things if the demand is high , but at the same time , I don't think it's our job to babysit those cant be bothered with cvs, but want the latest and greatset , or have older computers , etc. My worry with fixed versions passed out somewhere else is the confusion of which version broke and who is maintaining it ... certainly not me ! I think I know what your looking for , dont know if I like the idea , but it shouldn't be too difficult. You can tint the view from the menu to darken it so the screen info displays clearer ... what about another step to blackout the background view completely? What comes to mind is a line from the tower center outward on the display that could be rotated , but centering it on a runway might be tougher. Another plan I had was to remove any true heading references , since airports deal in magnetic headings , and it just confuses issues. But there are several people tweaking it , so I thought I'd leave it alone. Im currently working on other things , but I'll see what I can do . Also, if you are able to add this feature, I would most preferably like to see it in both version 1 and version 2 (if that's not asking too much, of course). Today I was using version 2, and while it was nice to have a full-sreen view of the live action, it made details on the scope a little illegible. We (the group of users participating in my MP event today) are hoping to make our gathering a monthly thing, so next month I can try version 1 instead and see if it's any better/easier. Thanks for your consideration. I appreciate all of the effort you guys put into this project, and all of the novelties you think to include! :) Cheers, -R. (MD-Terp) Robert M. Re: [Flightgear-devel] Multiplayer ATC aircraft, feature request...
That might be best . I know very little about what information a real scope displays , and intercepting a radial is the pilots job , so I dont know if I can bring myself to add that line ;). I know , Im sure you mean this as a training tool, and I'll play around with ideas , but I'd be interested in what you come with also. Cheers I'm still way below the level where I can code these things on my own, but I might be at a point now where I can compare ATC1 and ATC2 and snip out the best bits into a cobbled-together version I like. Re: [Flightgear-devel] Multiplayer ATC aircraft, feature request...
Sounds like you guys know far more about the subject than I do . I'll see what I can do . The simplest idea I had was to overlay another transparent texture with a single line that could be rotated to the runway heading , but I dont know if that's suitable. Maybe a property enabled line could be added to the groundradar code extending from each runway , but that's more Jester's department :) Cheers -- Let Crystal Reports handle the reporting - Free Crystal Reports 2008 30-Day trial. Which texture animation ? textranslate ? texrotate ? I dont see anything broken in that regard here , and all I ever use is cvs ... You pointed to the illumination article , so I'm guessing you mean material animation ? Which has been working fine for me for quite a long time , so this post is a bit puzzling . The only thing that comes to mind is that the global no longer works , you have to name each object to be affected. That is , IF your talking about material and not texture animation . A good lesson in how different people use different interfaces to the same functionality, and see different things :) This patch does not affect view movement *with the mouse* at all - it works just as before. What it does (indirectly) is enable view movement with the joystick hat (coolie hat) when paused - which previously did not work. It so happens that I find moving the view with the mouse very unintuitive, and always use the joystick hat ... but clearly this is an area where people differ. [Flightgear-devel] pilot list error
As I mentioned before , I've been looking for the missing player in the pilot list and model view. If I comment out the 2 lines below foreach , in multiplayer.nas at line 374 ... foreach (var n; props.globals.getNode(ai/models, 1).getChildren(multiplayer)) { #if (!n.getNode(valid, 1).getValue()) # continue; ... I then get the correct num-players in /ai/models, and I can now step through ALL the players in model view , and they all appear in the pilot list. I don't consider this a fix since I dont know why the above lines would cause a problem, but it's a start. Cheers Looks like this is a chicken-egg problem: The chicken: The model class in multiplayer.nas listens on the property /ai/models/model-added and checks for all models the property valid to be true. The egg: When AIManager attaches a model, it first loads the model by calling model-init(); FGAIBase::init() calls FGAIBase::load3DModel() which calls FGAIBase::initModel() which sets property /ai/models/model-added. (This triggers the chicken, but valid is not yet set to true) _AFTER_ model-init() in AIManager::atach() is finished, the property valid in the /ai/models/multiplayer[n] is set to true. This causes new latest addition to the multiplayer list to be ignored. I think the behaviour of FGAIBase and AIManager is correct to set the valid property to true after the initialization is complete. I also think that the check for valid in the model class in multiplayer.nas is required to stay there. I have just commited a patch for multiplayer.nas that ignores the valid flag for the latest pilot that has joined. Please check if this solves the problem. But I don't know of any NDB receiver (which is also known as ADF) that automatically tunes the DME frequency. Most modern receiver for VOR do this, like the KX165, but that is due to a link between the DME-receiver and the NAV-receiver. As far as i know, you have to tune the DME part of your NDB-DME manually and the cited line of nav.dat is unusable for the DME part, because the DME channel is missing. There's also this entry: 13 -42.72933900 170.95621900146 11750 1000.0 HK HOKITIKA NDB-DME which is the DME part of the NDB-DME. As Torsten notes, none of the receivers in FG at present do pairing of NDB-DME frequencies, and I have no idea if any real world equipment can do this - or if there's even a defined pairing scheme. You can happily tune your ADF to 310KHz, and a DME receiver to 117.5MHz, and either/both should work, but there's no link between the two other than their geographical co-location.
