Re: [Flightgear-devel] Panel designers: feedback needed

2009-01-01 Thread syd adams

I generally make 3d panels, but I find textranslate etc useful,
  indeed vital
within these 3d instruments for example in HIS.

I'm also using them for rain effects on canopies, so as far as I'm
  concerned
the 2d panel stuff is still very much in use.

(still trying to collect together all the feedback on this, so
apologies if this is a bit confused, but:)

Doesn't the animations system have a textranslate node as well?

As far as I can see, the features the animation system is missing
compared to the 2D panels is cropped textures (but maybe I've
overlooked it?) and text, but there seems to be some other issues with
the 2D text system, because, for example, Syd seems to use a sliding,
cropped number texture for each digit in favour of an actual text
 +chunks node.

(trying not to speak for Syd when he's away here)

 James

OK holidaying is done ! 2 days driving on snow covered roads is enough for
me :)
As far as I knew the textranslate is a 3d feature , not a 2d panel feature.

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Dots, degrees and magic '5's

2009-01-01 Thread syd adams

So, it seems like at least Syd may have been assuming the deflection
was in 'dots * 5' rather than 'degrees * 5' - I'd love Syd to confirm
or deny that. The upshot of this is that the GS indicator in Primus
is, **I think**, about 1/3rd as sensitive as it should be. However, I
could easily be wrong about this, so I'll wait for Syd to offer his
 opinion.

Comments on any of the above are welcome.

 Regards,
 James

I think i assumed long ago that the GS deflection had a limit of -10 to 10
like the heading-needle-deflection , and so scaled the needle to the
outermost dot accordingly.
The manual states that in GS mode the vertical scale is in degrees , and
captures at 0.5 degrees , and I'm assuming (again) , that each dot must
represent 1 degree, since I havent come across exact numbers yet.In other
words, my setup could be wrong, I'll have to research this more.

Which are you going to believe:
  -- the manual, or
-- the trees coming through the windshield?

The _center_ of the glideslope is only 3 degrees above horizontal
(sometimes less) and there are trees and things that stick up
above the horizontal plane. If each dot is 1.5 degrees, I'd
hate to be two dots low on the approach.

I see your point , but not being a pilot , I tend to believe the manual...
I'm still searching for cold hard facts, though.

Further online searching turned up this

This deflection corresponds to the direction the pilot must fly to intercept
the glide path and is proportional to the angular displacement from the
glide path angle. As with the localizer, the full scale deflection is 150
microamperes. Typically, the glide slope sensitivity is set so that the
full-scale indications occur at approximately 2.3 and 3.7 degrees elevation.

Ok , Im getting closer...i think
Another manual i have states min glideslope angle = 2.5 degrees , maximum =
3.25 degrees,
so does that mean the needle animation range should be 0.25 at the upper
second dot, and -0.5 for the bottom second dot ?
That approach illustration is really confusing me now :)

OK , so my needle animation is far too insensitive , but the needle
deflection property shows 0 at dead center (3 degrees). What I was asking is
what amount of deflection per dot the needle should move based on the
existing property , so I'll go with 0.35 and try some approaches.
Thanks everyone for pointing out this error...

Lately I have noticed that the glideslopes seem to be uniformly wrong or
inoperable somehow. This changed within the last couple of builds.
Previously, when on final, the visual glideslope indicators would
essentially match up with what the ILS was telling me. However, now it
seems as if the ILS is pegged high (indicating I am too low) while the
visual indicators are all white (indicating I am too high).

Also, this has possibly been going on quite some time now (since I started
reporting NaN bugs on my medium-haul flights), but in many cases, the METAR
doesn't change the active wind and cloud settings unless I actually look at
the METAR (Environment -- Weather Scenario). As soon as I close the dialog
box, the clouds change, the KIAS moves suddenly, and the plane may rock
side-to-side gently for a moment or two. *RARELY* I will notice the weather
settings change on their own during flight, but it seems as if *USUALLY* it
doesn't do so unless I look at the METAR.

This might be partly my fault , I changed the neelde animation because it
was pointed out that it was too insensitive , but now it has a very narrow
window to operate in , and the ealier discussions and the manual don't jive
so I'll look into it some more . The changes I made were about a week
or so ago.
I haven't looked at the instrumentation/nav/gs-needle-deflection while
flying to see if the behaviour has changed there yet...

For the aircraft models, there are 3 not-very-attractive choices:

  * Don't say the aircraft are GPL'ed. Models are under any random
 license;
  seller beware. Yuck.
  * Rip out the non-GPLed models.
  * Create GPL'ed and other aircraft repositories.

I am tired of the negative attitudes of some.

CVS is a place of study, research, development. It is not there to the
 users. Please.

The stable official FG contains a minimum of aircraft representing a wide
diversity. That's enough. And there is no place to get lost.

Those who choose to recover the aircrafts CVS do so knowingly. There is
therefore no criticism to make on this subject. Except, of course, want to
criticize for the sake of criticism and damage the work of others.

 Bests regards. Emmanuel

P.S. Free software is also freedom of choice. And more there will be
planes, more users will have the freedom to choose.

I have always used gdb and strace for debugging FlightGear. gdb -args
fgfs arguments will bring you into the gdb interface, run will start
it, bt is for backtrace, etc. Reading the man page for gdb would be best.

The only time I recall this happening to me was because I was completely
out of memory (I had 376 MBs at the time) and had to deal with it by
increasing swap size and dealing with the extra lag from using swap.

I would help test with this but my computer used for FlightGear died so
I am stuck with an onboard intel graphics chip that isn't worth a lick.

No this aircraft does NOT have an autopilot , thought you can trigger the

Just tried to compile simgear and got this error :

Got it to finish compiling by configuring like this:

I've started something similar, (I think) , with help from others, with the
ATC2.
I use the nasal airportinfo(id) to get airport and runway info. The ATC2
uses 2d panel text , but should be able to do the same in a dialog .
A listener would be able to run a routine whenever the ICAO code changed ...
... Im on lunch break , so dont have time for more details :)

(getting back into some route-manager / GPS hacking, after a busy few

Can anyone (with more experience of the GUI code and Nasal) suggest how
close I can get to a GUI like the one I've mocked-up below:

the idea being you enter an ICAO code, and when a valid code is entered,
the runways menu gets populated (defaulting to the active runway for the
airport, that's the one marked with an asterix) and we also update the
airport text field to show full name.

Here's what I think this needs, but perhaps I'm wrong:

- the ability to populate a menu (of runways, in this case, but it
could be anything) dynamically from a script / dialog-action - presumably
from a Nasal array of strings, or a hash.
- a way to run a dialog-action every time a text input field (for
the airport ICAO code) receives a key-press, so I can keep trying to look up
the airport and then populate the runways menu.

I want this for the route-manager dialog, but I can imagine similar
concepts being useful in the other places in the GUI - for example the
'position on ground' dialog could have the runway and parking position
fields replaced with menus, avoiding having to guess the correct values.

 James

Currently, to test any animated models which use /sim/time/utc/second, I

In view of the way things are being changed as FG progresses, it would be

Yes , I'm one of the culprits , and it's not a lack of foresight ,I've done
it for a reason. MP is not my biggest concern , I did these aircraft for my
own purposes , not entirely with gamers in mind ... but Im glad some like
them all the same.
These aircraft use one fuselage model now , with gear and other aircraft
specific options selected depending on type or name, with cockpit and
internals separated to be selected within a certain distance. So there IS no
dhc2floats or dhc2wheels.
It can be set so the model is visible with older versions ,by adding another
animation xml file with those names and adding the neccesary ac model bits
,but in my opinion adds more garbage to the folder.

I,ve been updating the dhc-2 for more realistic behavior, (sorry gamers);),
so it's nearly ready for another commit, and I can add the old versions ,
but there's also the option of adding these to the AI/Aircraft .Any idea on
which option we should take from the rest of the modellers ?

(My problem with that is you end up with two aircraft to maintain, and I
tend to forget about the AI version).

The specific culprits today are Syd Adams (dhc2, for sure and dhc6 also, I
think) and Gerard Robin (PBY-Catalina). There might have been more cases
today, and I think we have a few more a/c in cvs who exhibit those symptoms
 :)

I'm sure it was all unintentional and a simple lack of foresight on the
consequences such changes might have, but there we have it.

No , I have no problem with MP , it's a nice break to go flying and chat ...
my point was I dont build these to impress gamers or specifically for MP,
there are usually aspects of that aircraft I'm interested in.I dont mind
helping out to fix things if the demand is high , but at the same time , I
don't think it's our job to babysit those cant be bothered with cvs, but
want the latest and greatset , or have older computers , etc.
My worry with fixed versions passed out somewhere else is the confusion of
which version broke and who is maintaining it ... certainly not me !
And Martin is right that I think it's a temporary hack , but it should work
itself out down the road.
Dont mean to sound harsh , just stating my point of view .

As I understand Syd he decided that adding a hack to FlightGear's CVS
Base Package is nothing more than just the lesser evil compared to
having people distribute deprecated versions of his aircraft. I don't
think he's enthusiastic about this hack.

Just an example for many points in which I disagree with your
 conclusions,

A couple other things I noticed. In the dhc2-sound.xml, mp-inhg should
be replaced with mp-osi so engine sound will work in replays. The
other thing was ground handling, the turn radius seemed very large for
a tail dragger/bush plane. I had often had troubles getting it turned

better to me, I can actually swing it around now. On the other hand, I
have no real idea what a beaver handles like on the ground...so just

I think I know what your looking for , dont know if I like the idea , but it
shouldn't be too difficult. You can tint the view from the menu to darken
it so the screen info displays clearer ... what about another step to
blackout the background view completely?
What comes to mind is a line from the tower center outward on the display
that could be rotated , but centering it on a runway might be tougher.
Another plan I had was to remove any true heading references , since
airports deal in magnetic headings , and it just confuses issues.
But there are several people tweaking it , so I thought I'd leave it alone.
Im currently working on other things , but I'll see what I can do .

How easy/difficult would it be to add a small detail to the radar scope

trying to eyeball the extended lines, especially when zoomed out past the
range where the runways were clearly visible.

Also, if you are able to add this feature, I would most preferably like to
see it in both version 1 and version 2 (if that's not asking too much, of
course). Today I was using version 2, and while it was nice to have a
full-sreen view of the live action, it made details on the scope a little
illegible. We (the group of users participating in my MP event today) are

A good lesson in how different people use different interfaces to the
same functionality, and see different things :)

This patch does not affect view movement *with the mouse* at all - it
 works just as before.

What it does (indirectly) is enable view movement with the joystick
hat (coolie hat) when paused - which previously did not work. It so
happens that I find moving the view with the mouse very unintuitive,
and always use the joystick hat ... but clearly this is an area where
 people differ.

[Flightgear-devel] pilot list error

foreach (var n; props.globals.getNode(ai/models,

... I then get the correct num-players in /ai/models, and I can now step

Looks like this is a chicken-egg problem:

 The chicken:
The model class in multiplayer.nas listens on the
property /ai/models/model-added and checks for all models the
 property valid to be true.

 The egg:
When AIManager attaches a model, it first loads the model by calling
 model-init();
 FGAIBase::init() calls FGAIBase::load3DModel() which calls
FGAIBase::initModel() which sets property /ai/models/model-added. (This
triggers the chicken, but valid is not yet set to true)
_AFTER_ model-init() in AIManager::atach() is finished, the property
 valid
in the /ai/models/multiplayer[n] is set to true.

This causes new latest addition to the multiplayer list to be ignored.

I think the behaviour of FGAIBase and AIManager is correct to set the
 valid
property to true after the initialization is complete.
I also think that the check for valid in the model class in
 multiplayer.nas
 is required to stay there.

I have just commited a patch for multiplayer.nas that ignores the valid
 flag
for the latest pilot that has joined.

Please check if this solves the problem.

 Torsten

[Flightgear-devel] navradio

2009-09-05 Thread syd adams
Hello.
Unless Im doing something wrong , I'm now getting these errors trying to
compile FG...

navradio.cxx: In member function ‘virtual void FGNavRadio::update(double)’:
navradio.cxx:362: error: ‘struct SGVec3d’ has no member named ‘sg’
navradio.cxx:362: error: ‘struct SGVec3d’ has no member named ‘sg’
navradio.cxx:363: error: ‘struct SGVec3d’ has no member named ‘sg’
make[3]: *** [navradio.o] Error 1

Ive tried compiling SG and FG starting from ./autogen.sh onward , but no
luck.
I'll try deleting the source for both and do a fresh checkout , but thought
I'd mention the problem just in case.
cheers

Re: [Flightgear-devel] pilot list error

After the first test I'm getting ...

Nasal runtime error: nil used in numeric context
  at /home/syd/FGFS/data/Nasal/multiplayer.nas, line 275

which of coarse causes the pilot list to not appear. Will
continue testing .

Changing line 275 in multiplayer.nas to

distance-to-km: distance / 1000.0 or 0,

appears to get things running again.

Re: [Flightgear-devel] pilot list error

2009-09-06 Thread syd adams
Last test shows correct amount of players , pilot list good , model view
good , but now apparently when someone leaves and valid becomes false , they
remain on the pilot list / model view for a short time , though no 3d model
is visible in the model view.
But I need sleep , have to look at it tomorrow.
Cheers

After many tries , deleting navradio , doing make clean , make distclean,I
finally had to delete the FG and SG source and do a new checkout . Now
everything compiles fine .
Another reason I'd love to see CVS gone :)

I know , it's wikipedia , but it gives a short explanation of the VOR -DME

  http://wikimapia.org/9701833/Hokitika-NDB-DME
No doubt about this. But I don't know of any NDB receiver (which is
  also known
as ADF) that automatically tunes the DME frequency.
Most modern receiver for VOR do this, like the KX165, but that is
  due to a
link between the DME-receiver and the NAV-receiver.

As far as i know, you have to tune the DME part of your NDB-DME
  manually and
the cited line of nav.dat is unusable for the DME part, because the
  DME
  channel is missing.

 There's also this entry:

13 -42.72933900 170.95621900146 11750 1000.0 HK HOKITIKA
 NDB-DME

which is the DME part of the NDB-DME.

As Torsten notes, none of the receivers in FG at present do pairing of
NDB-DME frequencies, and I have no idea if any real world equipment
can do this - or if there's even a defined pairing scheme. You can
happily tune your ADF to 310KHz, and a DME receiver to 117.5MHz, and
either/both should work, but there's no link between the two other
 than their geographical co-location.

Again, if anyone with more knowledge of such facilities wants to
 comment, please do.

 James

I think the pairing of a DME with a VOR is unchallenged. People
(including me) are doubtful about the pairing of a DME with an NDB,

Martin.
