Re: [ha-Safran] Book challenge policy and form

A book challenge is when someone asks to have a book removed from the shelves
of a library because they find the book objectionable.

[ha-Safran] Book challenge policy and form

2022-12-12 Thread Susan Kusel via Hasafran
Hi friends,
I am looking for a simple policy to have when a library is presented with a
book challenge. If you have a form to fill out, that would be helpful too.

I want something specifically for a synagogue library.

I just had my second challenge in ten years and want to be more prepared the
next time it happens. Thanks for sharing any policies you may have.

[ha-Safran] Book donations and antisemitism?

2022-11-10 Thread Susan Kusel via Hasafran
Hi friends,
A patron recently asked me about donating Jewish books to my library. I
didn't happen to need these particular books, so I suggested she donated them
to the used book sale at her public library. Here was her response.

--
We have been carting bags and boxes of other books to the local library for
many months, but I was treating items of Jewish content differently. Pardon my
paranoia, do I need to be concerned in these days of rising antisemitism about
Jewish books going to a public library?
--

Has anyone experienced any issues with this?
Thanks!

[ha-Safran] Looking for the title of a Holocaust book

2022-10-17 Thread Susan Kusel via Hasafran
I have a patron looking for a Holocaust book.

I asked if the performance was in a camp, and she said yes, which led me to
believe it might be Terezin.

Thanks for any help.

-Susan

I wonder if you could help me with the title of a book I read almost 30 years
ago.

The book is about a girl who goes from camp to camp during the holocaust. I
remember a few details:
Her mom had long legs and used to swim in their pool

She dyed her curtains yellow using onions

They would get settled and have to move and restart.

At one point she had a performance and her shoe fell off as she walked on stage.

[ha-Safran] Germany after the Holocaust

2022-06-05 Thread Susan Kusel via Hasafran
Hi friends,
I have a patron who made the following request. The books I am finding are
either personal memoirs, published many years ago and don't go up to the
present day, or are on one very specific aspect such as music. Do you know any
books that would fulfill this request? Many thanks!

"I’d like to read something about how the Germans responded to the
Holocaust—how they rehabilitated their image, changed their government,
education system, something along those lines."

Circulation in my synagogue library is definitely way down. COVID is absolutely
the reason.

A lot of things that draw patrons have been virtual such as Shabbat services,
religious school, adult education, social events like book clubs and mahjong...
even funerals, etc. And there are fewer people in the building in general,
including staff, who also check out books.

But I do feel like my circulation is just starting to revive. It's so nice to

Cynthia Ozick's play "The Shawl." It is a rewrite of her earlier play called
"Blue Light" and he can't find it. I haven't been able to either. He is not
sure if either of them have been published. He would appreciate any advice or
insight any of you may have.

He already has the published short story. He only wants the play.

Many thanks!
-Susan

Thank you, Heidi, for making this excellent list.

I just want to clarify that I don’t know Rabbi Cytron-Walker personally, but he
is good friends and was rabbinic classmates with my dear friend Rabbi Glenn

Sending all of you love and support.

Saturday's hostage situation at Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas
was obviously very upsetting. If you are feeling helpless, here is a list of
actions you can take to push back against antisemitism, from the Justice
section at The Book of Life blog.

Our AJL pal Susan Kusel is friend with Rabbi Charlies Cytron-Walker, and she
donated to the Rabbi's Discretionary fund in honor of Rabbi Charlie
Cytron-Walker's extraordinary calmness and bravery, but there are many other
funds as well such as the General Fund and Chai Hopes (which go right to the

Hoping that action can feel empowering, and praying for peace,

[ha-Safran] Grace Aguilar and the U.S. Jewish Sunday School movement

2021-12-08 Thread Susan Kusel via Hasafran
A professor friend of mine is doing research on the following topic and I was
wondering if any of you wonderful, knowledgeable folks might have some answers
for her. Many thanks!

Here's her question:

I'm working on a paper regarding Jewish Victorian writer Grace Aguilar's
connection with the U.S. Jewish Sunday School movement in the 19th century. I
know there are some references in the Women's Jewish Archive page, but wondered
if any of you are familiar with this area and could possibly give me some
leads. I want to make sure I don't inadvertently miss anything.

[ha-Safran] Bar mitzvah service in German and Serbian

2021-12-07 Thread Susan Kusel via Hasafran
Hi friends,

I have a patron who is looking for a translation of the Reform bar mitzvah
service in German, for relatives who will be streaming her son's service in
Germany.

She may also need Serbian too.

Readings for service
Bo (Exodus 11:1-3, 4-7, 8-10)
Jeremiah 46:27-28
Exodus 12:21-23, 24-28, 29-32
Jeremiah 46:13-16

If you have any leads, please let me know. If it doesn't already exist, I think
she may also be willing to engage a translator.

Many, many thanks.

Re: [ha-Safran] Books dealing with diversity of the Jewish experience

2021-06-11 Thread Susan Kusel via Hasafran
Hi Amy
My synagogue did this exact type of program with My Jewish Year by Abigail
Pogrebin and it was a perfect choice.

There is enormous diversity of Jewish experience in the book. Also, we were
able to have holiday events connected to the book throughout the book.

Wishing you the best of luck.

Collective wisdom,

Our synagogue is looking to do a "one synagogue, one book" type of event. They
are looking at a theme of diversity of Jewish experience. Does anyone have any
suggestions? Could be fiction or non-fiction, but preferably something light
enough for summer reading (yes it is June already!). I am interpreting
"diversity" broadly. Marra Gad's Color of Love and Sue Eisenfeld's Wandering
Dixie were both suggested and seem like decent possibilities.

Thank you for any ideas.

Even the most avid students of Jewish genealogy find that the thousands of
databases, books, and websites devoted to the subject can make their quest for
information a daunting one. What you really need is a knowledgeable guide and
some practical tips and strategies.

Karen S. Franklin is ready to provide them as she outlines the process to
successfully explore general family history websites such as
Ancestry.com, as well as online sites exclusive to Jewish genealogy such as
JewishGen.org, and, of course, local archives and libraries. Franklin will feature a
Richmond Jewish family as she demonstrates how to use these tools. Contact

[ha-Safran] Seeking an intern

2020-02-06 Thread Susan Kusel via Hasafran
Searching for: an intern for a few hours a week or every other week for a
synagogue library in the Washington DC area. All prospective librarians
welcome; interest in working with Judaica books or becoming a Judaica librarian
a plus. Duties include assisting with basic cataloging, reference, purchasing,
and donations for adult and/or children's services... all of which will be
taught if they are new skills to the intern. The intern should indicate what
their main interests are, so the internship can incorporate those aspects of
librarianship. The internship will be set up as a mentor/mentee relationship.
The librarian is happy to work with library schools or other institutions if
credit hours are needed. If interested, please send an email to

I second the suggestion of OPALS. It’s also reasonably priced and the tech help

We have been using OPALs, if it is within your

I've volunteered to help get my synagogue's library in order. There are two
parts to the collections. The adult reference materials are held in the chapel
and will be checked out on an honor system; the children's library is in a room
that is being converted into an official library. Of course my synagogue will
be joining AJL.

Another shul member who already works in a public school will be in charge of
children's collection. She wanted to know what program works best for a
collection of about 1,000 title. We want to be able to check out books using a
scanner, so I'd also appreciate a suggestion as to what scanner you'd recommend.

[ha-Safran] Request for a specific Holocaust book

2019-03-26 Thread Susan Kusel via Hasafran
Hello friends,
I have a request for a specific Holocaust book based on the following
description. Thanks for any help.
-Susan

"I have a question... I'm trying to find a book that I once read and no amount
of Google searches are bringing it up. Wondering if you might be able to help.

It was a book about a young girl (and her mother). I believe the dad and
brother were never seen again, are sent to a concentration camp, I think in
Germany. Something about this book really stuck with me. I read it in 1992
where I picked it up from the library at the Stanford in Berlin campus. it
wasn't a long book as I recall. I am going to Auschwitz in May and I wanted to
re-read this book. The details that I can remember is that it was a detailed
account of her day to day life in the camp and how she survived. She did this
by putting multiple women in a bunk and sleeping very close together for
warmth, mixing their urine with breakfast mush to try to make it palatable, and
in her case, she was a "member" of two different cabins that were on two
schedules. She was starving and then figured out that when her cabin was going
out to the fields to work, she could somehow get her name on the roster of
another cabin that was just coming in to sleep. Thus she was in two cabins that
were resting and none that were working. Her mother was possibly a nurse
assistant that worked with the doctors there (and saw very horrible things).
One of them also worked sorting out the discarded clothes of people who went to
the showers so they somehow got a coat. I also remember parts about how some
of the people were "rats" for the Nazis and would turn fellow Jews in. And
that the "leader" of her cabin somehow figured out how to meet up with her
boyfriend. For the life of me I can't remember how it ends. If you have any
thoughts on this or any ideas on how to figure out what book it was, I'd love
to re-read it."

[ha-Safran] Opening on the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee

2019-01-04 Thread Susan Kusel via Hasafran
Hi everyone,
Below, please find information about how to apply for one currently vacant
position on the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee. Please note that the term
of service has been changed from 4 years to 2 years.
Shabbat Shalom,
-Susan

Dear Colleagues,

There is one position available on the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee.

Applicants should be members of AJL, familiar with the scope of Judaic
children’s literature, experienced in writing critical reviews, willing and
able to read and review over 150 books during the course of a year, and able to
meet deadlines.

Committee members are expected to attend the annual conference and to
participate in committee-sponsored events, including speaking at the
Committee’s annual presentation. The term of membership on the Committee is
two years. Each committee member typically receives more than $1,500 in books
for review, which may be kept for personal use or added to the member’s library.

Membership on the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee is both fun and
intellectually challenging. It also requires a substantial commitment in terms
of time and energy.

Members must be able to submit reviews electronically and correspond with the
committee members through regular e-mail. Familiarity with Google Docs is
helpful but not required.

To apply, send a letter indicating the reasons for your interest, a resume, and
several examples of your recent reviews of Jewish children’s books to Susan
Kusel, Committee Chair, at susanku...@yahoo.com

Applications will be accepted through February 1, 2019.

Susan Kusel, Chair
Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee

Hi everyone,
A staff member at my synagogue is looking for historic newspaper headlines
that announce Israel's statehood. They need to be the images of the front
pages- not just the full text of the articles.

I was able to find pictures of the front pages for the New York Times and the
Washington Post for May 15, 1948, but she would also really like pictures from
European and Israeli newspapers.

If you have access to a database that can do this, and have time to send me a
PDF or JPEG, it would be greatly appreciated. Google does not have the kinds of
images she is looking for.

Many thanks,

[ha-Safran] Sydney Taylor Book Awards to be announced at 2019 ALA press conference

2018-02-01 Thread Susan Kusel
Hi everyone,
I am delighted to report that next year in January, 2019 the Sydney Taylor
Book Awards will be announced at the Youth Media Awards (YMA) press conference
during the American Library Association's Midwinter Meeting. This is the press
conference where the Newbery and Caldecott Medals are announced, along with the
other ALA children's and young adult awards.

The YMAs are an absolutely enormous event in the children's book field- this
is the equivalent of being on the Oscar broadcast. We are thrilled about the
potential increase in publicity for the Sydney Taylor Awards.

Here is a link to a press release from ALA:

January 10, 2018
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
2018 Sydney Taylor Book Award Winners Announced
Winners of the annual Sydney Taylor Book Award were announced by the
Association of Jewish Libraries today. Named in memory of Sydney Taylor, author
of the classic All-of-a-Kind Family series, the award recognizes books for
children and teens that exemplify high literary standards while authentically
portraying the Jewish experience.

2018 is the 50th Anniversary of the Sydney Taylor Awards. The first winner was
The Endless Steppe: Growing Up in Siberia by Esther Hautzig in 1968, published
by the Thomas Y. Crowell Company.

GOLD MEDALISTS
The Language of Angels: A Story About the Reinvention of Hebrew by Richard
Michelson, illustrated by Karla Gudeon, published by Charlesbridge, won the
Sydney Taylor Book Award in the Younger Readers category. This beautiful
picture book tells the story of how Hebrew became an everyday language in
Israel, after being out of use for two thousand years. The folk art
illustrations are an illuminating match.

Refugee by Alan Gratz, published by Scholastic Press, an imprint of Scholastic,
won the Sydney Taylor Book Award in the Older Readers category. The journeys of
three different young refugees from Nazi Germany, 1990s Cuba and present-day
Syria come together to form an emotional and timely narrative about the refugee
experience.

The Librarian of Auschwitz by Antonio Iturbe, translated by Lilit Thwaites,
published by Godwin Books, an imprint of Henry Holt and Company, a division of
Macmillan Children's Publishing Group, won the Sydney Taylor Book Award in the
Teen Readers category. This powerful story of Dita Kraus and her protection of
a handful of books in the Auschwitz concentration camp shows the importance of
hope in the darkest of times.

Harold Grinspoon and PJ Library won the Sydney Taylor Body of Work Award. PJ
Library, a project of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, is a family engagement
program that sends free books celebrating Jewish values and culture to families
with children 6 months through 8 years old. This program has revolutionized the
field of Jewish children’s literature by providing dramatically improved access
to Jewish books for families. It has also significantly increased the
publication of children’s books with Jewish content. The Body of Work Award has
been given twelve times in the 50-year history of the Sydney Taylor Awards. The
last recipient was author Eric Kimmel in 2004.

SILVER MEDALISTS
Eight Sydney Taylor Honor Books were also recognized.
For Younger Readers, the Honor Books are: Yaffa and Fatima: Shalom, Salaam
adapted by Fawzia Gilani-Williams, illustrated by Chiara Fedele, published by
Kar-Ben Publishing, a division of Lerner Publishing Group and Drop by Drop: A
Story of Rabbi Akiva by Jacqueline Jules, illustrated by Yevgenia Nayberg,
published by Kar-Ben Publishing, a division of Lerner Publishing Group.

For Older Readers, the Honor Books are: Viva, Rose! by Susan Krawitz, published
by Holiday House, which was also the recipient of the 2015 Sydney Taylor
Manuscript Award; This Is Just a Test by Madelyn Rosenberg and Wendy Wan-Long
Shang, published by Scholastic Press, an imprint of Scholastic; and The Six-Day
Hero by Tammar Stein, published by Kar-Ben Publishing, a division of Lerner
Publishing Group.

For Teen Readers, the Honor Books are: To Look a Nazi in the Eye: A Teen’s
Account of a War Criminal Trial by Kathy Kacer with Jordana Lebowitz, published
by Second Story Press; Almost Autumn by Marianne Kaurin, translated by Rosie
Hedger, published by Arthur A. Levine Books, an imprint of Scholastic; and The
Girl with the Red Balloon by Katherine Locke, published by Albert Whitman &
Company.

In addition to the medal winners, the Award Committee designated twelve Notable
Books of Jewish Content for 2018. More information about the Sydney Taylor Book
Award and a complete listing of the award winners and notables can be found at
http://www.sydneytaylorbookawards.org

Winning authors and illustrators will receive their awards at the Annual
Conference of the Association of Jewish Libraries, to be held in Boston, MA
from June 18-20, 2018. Gold and silver medalists will also participate in a
blog tour February 4-8, 2018. For more information about the blog tour please
visit www.jewishlibraries.org/blog<http://www.jewishlibraries.org/blog>.

The Language of Angels and Refugee were also named winners of the 67th Annual
National Jewish Book Awards, which were announced today as well. A full list of

2017-11-14 Thread Susan Kusel
Hi Rachel,

There are two different sets of Steinsaltz’s English Talmud.

One is published by Random House.

The other is published by Koren- and new volumes are continuing to be added to
it every month.

See if you can find out the publisher... that makes a big difference in how
many volumes there are.

It is probably the Random House one... the Koren one is much newer, and it is
unlikely that someone is ready to part with it.

Subject: [ha-Safran] Steinsaltz English Talmud set

Dear Hasafranim,

The president of our congregation recently received a letter from the son of a
now deceased congregant who would like to donate a set of Steinsaltz English
Talmud. I don't know anything more about the set and we can only contact him by
snail mail.

In the meantime, I'm trying to determine if perhaps this donated set could plug
holes in the Library's set, which only contains up to volume 16. From internet
searches, I understand there are at least 22 volumes, I think completing
Sanhedrin, but I'd like to confirm this. Are there more volumes? I'm having
trouble finding definitive information. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Subject: [ha-Safran] Open positions on the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee

Dear Colleagues,

Positions on the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee will be available beginning
in January 2017.

Applicants should be members of AJL, familiar with the scope of Judaic
children's literature, experienced in writing critical reviews, willing and
able to read and review over 120 books during the course of a year, and able to
meet deadlines.

Committee members are expected to attend the annual conference and to
participate in committee-sponsored events, including speaking at the
Committee's annual presentation. The term of membership on the Committee is
four years. Each committee member typically receives more than $1,500 in books
for review, which may be kept for personal use or added to the member's library.

To apply, send a letter indicating the reasons for your interest, a resume, and
several examples of your recent reviews of Jewish children's books to Susan
Kusel, Committee Chair, at susanku...@yahoo.com<mailto:susanku...@yahoo.com>

Applications will be accepted through December 1, 2017.

[ha-Safran] All-Of-A-Kind Family Walking Tour

2017-10-08 Thread Susan Kusel
Hello everyone,
I wanted to let you know about the next Museum at Eldridge Street's
All-Of-A-Kind Family Walking Tour, particularly for those who live in or near
Manhattan. They do these tours periodically, so if you are interested, but
can't make this one, you can ask the museum about when their next one will be.

ALL-OF-A-KIND FAMILY WALKING TOUR
October 22 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
Museum at Eldridge Street, 12 Eldridge Street
New York, NY 10002

What was it like to be a kid growing up on the Lower East Side in the early
20th century? Find out as we follow in the footsteps of Ella, Henny, Sarah,
Charlotte, and Gertie, the beloved sisters depicted in Sydney Taylor's
children's classic All-of- a-Kind Family. Stroll through the story and onto
the streets as we visit the spots where the children played, prayed, and
purchased their pickles and candy. Tickets can be purchased on the museum
website<https://www.eldridgestreet.org/event/all-of-a-kind-family-walking-tour-2/>.

[ha-Safran] Title suggestions needed

2016-02-11 Thread Susan Kusel
I have a reference question I could use help with. Someone in our community
has reached out to us who would like to buy books for a Jew who is in prison,
and would like suggestions of titles to purchase. The prisoner in question is a
Jamaican Jew who has requested Jewish adult ed materials. The request has been
quite broad (the original request was just for Jewish books). It has been
difficult to narrow it down- since we are not directly involved in the
conversation... the requestor and the prisoner are writing letters back and
forth and it takes about a month to get any clarification.

We sent a list of several possible Jewish topics, and received this itemized
list in response: "#1 Jewish History, #2 Philosophy, #3 theology, and #4
Traditional Jewish Living. But I really like "Philosophy."

All these categories are still rather broad, and suggestions for your favorites
in these topics would be appreciated. Probably not the classics, it sounds like
he's already read those... more current titles would probably be better.

I'm a librarian at a reform synagogue, and if anyone can help with "traditional
Jewish living" that would also be very appreciated.

**Also- the particular prison that he is at does not allow for hardcover books,
so any titles would have to be available in paperback.

Thank you so much for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

[ha-Safran] Audio Books

2015-02-24 Thread Susan Kusel
Hi all,
A patron recently gave our synagogue library a donation to start a small
audio book collection. Can you recommend any fiction or non-fiction audio book
favorites? My plan is to purchase them on CDs, and not as downloads or e-audio
at this point in accordance with the donation. If you have a good
recommendation for where to purchase, that would also be appreciated.
Thank you for your help!
-Susan

[ha-Safran] Hebrew magazines

2014-09-14 Thread Susan Kusel
Hello,
I have a patron with a query, and I knew this list would be able to help.
Here's the question:

Can you recommend a Hebrew language (ideally Israeli) magazine or newsletter
for teens and preteens who have a beginner level of Hebrew?

Thanks for any thoughts!

[ha-Safran] Israeli poetry

2014-07-14 Thread Susan Kusel
Hello all,
Our emeritus rabbi has a specific request and I knew that this group would
be able to come up with just the book he is looking for.

He would like an anthology of Israeli poetry- specifically written by Israeli
poets- available in both English and Hebrew. He is looking for a comprehensive
collection of major poetic works... multiple volumes are fine. He is looking
for poets from Bialik to the present.

Thank you for any leads on this request.

[ha-Safran] OPALS users attending the conference

2014-06-18 Thread Susan Kusel
Hello all,
This is a request for any OPALS users on the listserv that are attending the
conference this week.

I just purchased OPALS (yesterday!) and would love to talk to an experienced
user who could walk me through the basic process of using the system.
We currently have a card catalog, so this is a big change for us.

I have the manuals, am attending the OPALS user meeting, and speaking with
Harry Chan as well, but would love to hear the experiences of someone who uses
it every day.

I'm thinking about a half hour... nothing too lengthy. Please reply off list if
you have time available.

And thanks to everyone for their advice on barcode scanners! It was extremely
helpful.

[ha-Safran] One Book program

2014-04-01 Thread Susan Kusel
Hello all,
My synagogue is planning on doing a One Book- One Community program, and
we're having difficulty picking the right book.

Ideally, we'd like to conclude the program with a visit from the author- so
we're trying to make sure the author of the book we select would be able to
come to our shul in the Washington D.C. area.

We would like to find a book that appeals to both men and women, preferably a
novel, and not a Holocaust title.

Any feedback about recommended books or successful programs would be greatly
appreciated.
Thank you so much!

[ha-Safran] Holiday spine labels

2012-12-18 Thread Susan Kusel
Hi everyone,
I'm searching for subject labels to put on the spines of holiday books in
our children's collection. I was able to find Hanukkah labels and a generic
Jewish holiday label through Brodart and Demco. I was wondering if anyone has
a source for additional holidays such as Passover and Purim. Thanks for any
help.
