Re: DS6800 and OS/390 2.9
You can use the DS/6xxx under OS/390 (back to 2.7), but you cannot use some of the DS/6xxx features. You also MUST use system Z hardware (i.e. z-series), you cannot use a 9672 (or anything older than a z/800). We ran fine with a customer converting on a z/800 with OS/390 2.7 who converted from a 2105 to a DS/6 with no problems, we updated the hardware first (got rid of the 2105) and then updated them to the current version of z/OS (which was then z/OS 1.10). They were on a 9672, but we moved the OS to the z/800 first. We didn't test if it would work on the 9672, the DS box wasn't going to be installed until 2 months after the z/800, so even though we were told that it wouldn't work, we never really got a chance to test it. I do believe that it probably would not have worked on the 9672 though. The entire conversion took about 3 months because of some application programming issues, the hardware part was a weekend thing to install the new Raid, copy everything to it and we were done. We did run into some problems with how slow the copy ran, and we never did find out why, but once we were on the new DS box there seemed to be no problem, and we had other things to do so we never went back to look into it. It wasn't as slow as going to tape first or anything, but it was not anywhere near as fast as we had calculated that it should be. If you want you can contact me offline and I will help you all that I can. Re: CCW Trace
Hi I found a C++/assembler program from 1995. (The assembler to READ VTOC) It has read the CCW trace , and reported the DSN names and counts from the VTOC. Bill Does this problem still exist? Your third response is from a Bill Hecox ... IBM came out with many fixes for the TN3270 server and was stablized by 2005-2006. assuring us that IBM has dealt with presumably a number of problems, one per fix in general, and one would hope that whatever problem - not very precisely defined - it was you used to experience has been covered by this maintenance. If you are a bit more precise in what your problem was and provide a few details of the results of the problem determination you performed at the time, we can all try to pitch in with either a relevant APAR code or how customisation could help - as Mark Zelden indicated might be possible. You must have performed some problem determination since you're stating that it was the session that hung rather than the TCP connection - or does your use of the word session cover both the SNA session concatenated to the TCP connection and it was never clear which of the two was the source of the problem you experienced? Incidentally, how Matan Cohen can claim to have had the same problem, given that it was so imprecisely defined, is a bit of a mystery. He may have had the same - or a similar - *symptom*. I think I didn't mention with my statement about 15 years was that back then much of the access was just TCP/IP and TN3270 was coming from a CISCO router. I still see that today at some shops (as opposed to using the z/OS telnet server). There's no way to know what the OP's configuration is / was since little information was offered. I asked a few of the employees to try TN3270 from the emulator to the IBM TCP/IP TN3270 server. It worked but we started getting session hangs on the TN3270 sessions. DFSORT JOINKEYS question: Where to put INREC and OUTREC?
I have developed a JOINKEYS application, but I need to do one more function as part of the process, if it is possible. I am joining two VB files on 2 keys in the fixed part of the VB records and using OUTFIL statements to split the result into multiple output files. In each of the output files there is a header record (key values = all X'00') and a trailer record (key values = all X'FF'). I also want to insert a true record count into each trailer record in each output file, i.e. a record count that excludes the header and trailer records in a particular output file. Frank Yaeger already helped me in a prior email to construct a way to produce this count for a single-file COPY operation using an INREC and an OUTREC, which would require a separate pass over each output file. This is that function: OPTION COPY * ADD SEQNUM BETWEEN RDW AND DATA. INREC IFTHEN=(WHEN=INIT,BUILD=(1,4,5:SEQNUM,11,ZD,16:5)), * USE SEQNUM-2 TO PUT COUNT OF DATA RECORDS IN * LAST RECORD (IDENTIFIED BY X'FF'). IFTHEN=(WHEN=(16,1,BI,EQ,X'FF'), OVERLAY=(160:5,11,ZD,SUB,+2,M11,LENGTH=11)) * REMOVE SEQNUM. OUTREC BUILD=(1,4,5:16) Below is a sanitized version of my JOINKEYS application with just two of the OUTFIL statements as an example. My question is, where do I place the INREC above to accomplish the insertion of the SEQNUM fields for each record in each OUTFIL such that each OUTFIL has the correct record count in the trailer record? If I could do that, I could adjust the BUILD parameters in the OUTFIL statements to remove the SEQNUM inserted by the INREC. I did try just adding the INREC/OUTREC following the SORT statement, but that results in a trailer count for the entire JOINed file, not individually for each OUTFIL file. Can this be done in one pass? Or do I need a separate trailer count pass for each output file? TIA for any assistance you can provide. Re: DFSORT JOINKEYS question: Where to put INREC and OUTREC?
Peter, I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to do, but I can think of two ways to get a count like that. One would be to use an IFTHEN WHEN=INIT clause in each OUTFIL before the other IFTHEN clauses to insert the sequence number (of course, you have to adjust the positions in the subsequent IFTHEN clauses). The other would be to use COUNT-2=(edit) in TRAILER1 for each OUTFIL. If you want more help with this, feel free to send me more details offline (yae...@us.ibm.com): Please show an example of the records in each input file (relevant fields only) and what you expect for output. Explain the rules for getting from input to output. Give the starting position, length and format of each relevant field. Give the RECFM and LRECL of the input files. If file1 can have duplicates within it, show that in your example. If file2 can have duplicates within it, show that in your example.
