Re: [ilugd] [x-posted] potentially-damaging news: Apple 'buys' CUPS

2007-07-13 Thread Vikas Rawal

I dont think cups is project driven by single
programmer. Apple hiring lead programmer presents no
threat to the project as long as lead programmer is
 dedicated to the project.

In this case the license has been modified to explicitly exclude Apple
from the need to keep derivative products open source. Unless shown
otherwise, it does look like a case of the lead programmer being
bought.

I wonder how does GPLv3 deal with such takeovers. If it is so simple
to build in an exception clause, big corporations like Microsoft can
always sweeten the deal enough to lure programmers into selling out.

True, but in this case it is possible because of *policy* and has nothing to
do with copyright. The RIAA doesn't claim copyright on someone else's music.
It's It collects royalties and (claims to) share it with the original
copyright holder (even if he/she doesn't want any royalties). Yes it's
hair-brained and crazy but it's not as worrisome as it would have been had
RIAA claimed that the Free/CC License the music is published under somehow
allows RIAA to impose such restrictions. Effectively RIAA seems to have
jammed its foot exactly in between the stage of the music getting composed
and the stage of the music getting copylefted and being released on the web.
A gray area where politicians and the powers-that-be can do anything they
want.

So how does it affect my Internet radio station with artists from, say,
Europe, server based in Germany and promoters based in India? Are we
liable? I mean, the last A in RIAA does stand for ``Assh^H^H^H^H

of course the RIAA won't, but the question is will the MPAA in india? or
another equivalent indian-version of the long harm of the law.
IANAL, but it's surprising how things can be tracked down and shut down if
somone wants to do it. remember apple's fairplay controversy?

could someone check with lawrence liang what's the take on this?
i don't know.

[ilugd] Version control strategy

2007-07-13 Thread Mithun Bhattacharya
Does any one have any pointers for maintaining a collection of independent
scripts / very small projects under version control.

To elaborate I have about 200 scripts and 40 folders where each folder could be
considered a mini project.

I dont think this would fit a standard project layout where we can tag all the
scripts for each release. It also doesnt seem to make sense to create a module
out of every script. Changes could be as frequent as multiple times a day to
maybe once in two years. Almost all the changes result in an immediate release.

Any thoughts or pointers would be highly appreciated.

thanks kishore for the link.
this is nothing to get elated about.
this is a classic 'hail mary' dodge.
you think you've just scraped through and then the real whammer hits you at
little later.

peace has not broken out.
they're just re-negotiating.

i just hope ankur lugs his internetradio along. i'll help him carry it from
the car to the venue, assist in tuning it in, so we can all listen to and
enjoy some netradio as background music for our meeting.

i happily foresee the possibility of knob-control mania:
pankaj kaushal will douse everyone with heavymetal or grunge,
surpreet sethi will step in to tune-in to abida parvin,
kishore will bully his way to listen to some blues,
raj will want everyone to appreciate his refined tastes in 70s rock,
vivek khurana will want to let-go into classical dhrupad,
sudev will move to some loud bhangra,
and that's when ankur will yank his radio away and revv back to the sanctity
of his home.

let the music begin.

my tastes for music have expanded and diversified considerably since i
discovered netradio through amarok.
did not realize how i had become rather rigid and stuck on my preconceived
notions about music. we all talk about music being a universal language and
other blah! blah! but really, everyone, ask yourselves, do you really
appreciate all types and all genres of music?

nah!

internetradio, thanks to its smarts, may help to prise open our hardening
minds

am *so* delighted with the new music-genres and fresh new music i enjoy
these days.
i also realize in retrospect, listening to the same old repetitive music on
traditional FM radio blaring at us all the time, and on tv, has a remarkable
'dulling' experience on us.

ymmv.

what are the problems in creating a separate project

Also, please provide information on how the scripts
will be deployed. It is a good practice to create
version control structure to mimic deployment.

[ilugd] 1st Asian Nation to Adopt Open Software Standards

2007-07-13 Thread Raj Mathur
This may be some help in the battle against OOXML:

1st Asian Nation to Adopt Open Software Standards

Japan has adopted a policy under which government ministries and
agencies will solicit bids from software vendors whose products support
internationally recognized open standards and thus becomes the first
country in Asia to embrace the open software Standards, The
OpenDocument Format Alliance (ODF Alliance) says in a press release
(PDF).
