Re: [LegacyUG] problem with my legacy database
Hi Cindy I can' see a reply to your question so far, so here are my thoughts: 1If you can, identify the next generation where names and relationship are correct, and work back from there. Decide which spot you want your existing confused individual to end up in. Check each parent/child relationship and change those to the wrong spot (unlink then link parents/children). 2From what you describe you probably have an individual (or perhaps a couple) either missing, or one individual with the details collected from two individuals (parent and child). It may help to create a temporary individual named something useful (eg John the father) to get the linkages right before you then add in all the names/dated/places/facts/events etc, or perhaps delete the temporary individual if not needed. I find, when faced with a confusion in my database, it helps me to revert to paper and sketch the outline of what I want to end up with, in this case particularly noting the names and IDs for the surrounding next generations (that are correct) so then I have the extent of the problem defined. I then tick them off adding IDs as I work through the correction process. Cheers, Brett B McL Robinson, Hamilton, New Zealand On 11/11/2014 4:13 a.m., hofsea...@aol.com wrote: Please help. Cindy,Navigate on the Family tab to where you have the person showing as the father and as one of the children (his own child). Right-click on him as a child. Click Unlink from parents. [LegacyUG] Master Event Role List
Does Legacy have a master list for ROLES under a EVENT or do we have to create a new role for each event? I have entered several different events and shared them and each time I have created a new role, such as Father, Mother, Pallbearer, Sister-in-Law, etc. However, when I enter different type of a new event and go to share it, I again have to add these same roles for that event too. Shouldn't Legacy have a MASTER LIST for different ROLES? If there is one, where do I find it? Re: [LegacyUG] Master Event Role List
I don't know of any program using roles, that have a master list. I.E. TMG doesn't, RootsMagic doesn't and Legacy doesn't. All of these programs require that you create new roles for each event. Roles used in a census event may not necessarily apply to another event. If you maintained a master list, the list could become unweidly very quick. RE: [LegacyUG] Master Event Role List
Ron, While I am very new to Legacy, the software seems to be consistent with others of which I am familiar (specifically Genbox and RootsMagic) where there is a list of roles per event, but not roles across all events. In Legacy, if you select View Master Lists Event Definitions and select from the list an event to edit (for example, the 1921 Canadian Census) you will see two tabs ('Event Sentences' and 'Roles for those Sharing this Event'). It is on the second tab that you can 'Add Roles' for that specific event. The roles you add will then be available for all uses of that event. Please note that when adding a role, Legacy allows you to specific sentences for that role. Re: [LegacyUG] Master Event Role List
It would be fairly straight forward. A table of roles with links to the Event Definitions table such that each role would be related to the particular event type. There could be duplicate roles in the table if a specific role was used in multiple events. Or the roles could be un-connected from the event types and allow the user to decide how and when a role is linked. A master table for roles can not possibly be any more complex than trying to have a separate role for every individual connected to a shared event. This is the same logic for having master lists of locations, sources, surnames, etc. A relational database is designed to minimize duplicate entries and standardize how information is connected. The idea that other programs haven't developed a Roles table does not mean that no one should do it. Or maybe we have to wait for others to do it first so it is acceptable. Locations handled the way they were in PAF was unweidly. A master list simplifies things. OneDrive does not have an option to pause syncing as does Dropbox and Google drive. If you don't pause the syncing while working on your database there is a high probability of corrupting your database. Ron, With all due respect, you always come up with these ideas that you insist are so easy to implement, that Legacy should be responsible for implementing your idea. I'm curious as to why you have never written your own program which would allow you to incorporate everything you deem necessary to be in a genealogy program. [LegacyUG] Date Range Issue in Shared Events
Hello everyone. This is my first posting to this user group, although I've been a Legacy User for a very long time (I date back to Legacy 3). I've only recently discovered Shared Events (I can't believe I didn't know about it before last month! I guess that's what happens when you re-read the manual), but have come across a perplexing issue. There are two types of events: single date events (such as a birth, wedding, graduation, etc), and date ranged events (education, occupation and residence, for example). Residence is the one that concerns me most because it is really a shared event when you have families living together (under the head of household - in the same way a census is set up). The issue I have is that the shared event is a fixed date for all people the event is shared with, but the occupants of a residence come and go. For example, a couple may be married, but the husband leaves and his wife remains in the same house. This happened with my parents. It doesn't make sense for me to have another residence event for her to show this separation when she didn't move. It is also challenging because of children - they come and go - as well as other people who may stay for a brief time. For example, my sister resided with my aunt and uncle for 2 years, but they had lived in the same house for over 15 years. I know I can have the residence events separate for each individual, but then that doesn't really reflect the true sharing of the households. What I'd like to see is the ability to customize the date range of an event to the person sharing it. Anyone else with thoughts on this? [LegacyUG] How to move live Legacy file from Dropbox back to hard drive?
I'm running my live Legacy files from Dropbox and want to move them back to my hard drive. Do I just drag and drop the .fdb files from Dropbox to the Legacy Family Tree file in My Documents? What about the CBH, FG, FSD, ldb, NC, NC0, NC1, SC, TC, PPL, RGD files? Thanks! Re: [LegacyUG] Password for 7.5
As I understand it, the password is just for the purpose of initializing/completing the free download. If you have purchased the deluxe version, you will get a customer ID from Legacy. I just upgraded from version 7 deluxe to version 8 deluxe last night and they emailed me with my new version 8 customer number, which is different than my version 7 customer number. Easier is to use the File Save As command in Legacy and choose the folder where you now want your database to be. Re: [LegacyUG] Password for 7.5
My computer crashed and Dell put in a new hard drive and motherboard so I had to reload everything. I was able to download version 7.5 but I needed a password to do that. Then I needed my customer number to open the Deluxe version. I also purchased the Deluxe version of 8. I could not download it from the Internet so had to load my original disk. But there have been MANY updates since it was first offered. I can not get the updates to load. And I've tried 4 times. [LegacyUG] Oklahoma!
I was entering the birth date of a distant cousin, born in Overbrook, Nowata County, Oklahoma in 1892, according to a descendant's tree on Ancestry. When inputting this into Legacy, it told me that Nowata County was not founded till 1907. So I googled Oklahoma counties and found that Nowata's parent entity was Cooweescoowee District of Cherokee Nation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherokee_Nation ; how do I list this person's birthplace? Is there an explanation on the web as to how to cite Indian lands in Oklahoma that did not become U.S. counties till the 1910s or thereabouts? This is not the first time I have come across this problem. RE: [LegacyUG] Oklahoma!
Barton, The subject of entering locations that have changed over time has been discussed many times here. A review of the archives might help you determine how best to record locations that suit you best. Specifically in regards to Oklahoma, my father was born in Oklahoma in 1907, 6 months before statehood. I recorded his birthplace as Oklahoma Territory. As I understand it, prior to statehood Oklahoma was divided into two parts, Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory. Some counties were designated by number (County No. 4) or letter (D County) until they were organized after statehood. I have some locations recorded as Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, USA. The IT GenWeb site has a lot of info on this subject that might help you: http://www.okgenweb.org/~itgenweb/. John S.
