Re: istD button battery cover?

2016-01-04 Thread P.J. Alling

This is going to seem bad, but the *ist-D is now over 10 years old.
Heck I bet that the last one manufactured was probably produced in 2004
and that production run was sold until they ran out in 2006.

Last time I saw a *ist-D for sale at KEH it went for less than $90.00 in
EX condition.

Parts are probably made out of unobtainium at this point, and since one
can probably sell their *ist-D for ~90 dollars that's what the battery
door is worth.

I think you have two viable options. Haunt E-bay and KEH waiting for
one to show up to steal the battery cover from, (or replace the entire
camera with the new/old *ist-D), or replace it with a newer camera.

The K-50 is still being sold new and it's just shy of being a K-5II,
with a better viewfinder than the *ist-D and at it's current new price
it's practically being given away.

You might try this guy: http://mikescamera.com/pentax-camera-repair-parts.html
I'm not sure what part number that actually is, but if you email him
(email address on that page) he would probably know.

I just checked the bottom of mine and that's a bigger cover than you
usually see. Not sure what other models might have shared that part.
Perhaps the guy can tell you that also. If there were some of the
cheap & plentiful Pentax FILM camera bodies that shared the same part,
you might have better luck purchasing a whole body to rob the battery
cover from. I'd google Pentax film camera specifications to see if any
share the same battery with the istD (hopefully there are some) and
then see which of them is cheapest on eBay.

OT - Q: how to link eBay account with Paypal?

2016-01-04 Thread Bruce Walker
I know that there are lots of savvy eBay and Paypal folks on the list,
and there must be a fix for this stupid problem.

I'm trying to buy a lens from an eBay buyer who has stipulated that he
only sells to customers with a linked eBay/Paypal. So I go into my
eBay account settings, click "Link with Paypal", follow the prompts,
and ... nothing. Nothing except another browser tab open on eBay that
is. Account remains stubbornly unlinked. Support info is useless.
Forum is useless. Have tried three different browsers.

Anyone here been faced with this and got past it? Apparently sellers
can't collect if their account isn't linked to Paypal so it's a real
issue.

Thanks!

That's the trouble though, Ann. During checkout with this one seller I

And yes the Link With Paypal button is there, but when I use it I get
logged into Paypal, it tells me that the process is almost complete
and to click another button to go back to eBay, then nothing happens.
Not linked.

OT: A great use for good Scotch

2016-01-04 Thread Bill
My father used to make a fudge like candy that was pretty much just
brown sugar, milk and some butter.
He would put a little vanilla extract into it from time to time, but
that was a rare occasion, generally because he wasn't using a dark sugar.
One of the little stocking stuffer gifts my wife gave me for Christmas
was some fudge candies from Scotland made by the distillery Edradour.
They use a small amount of their Scotch as a flavoring.
I decided I needed to try making this myself, so, remembering vaguely
what the proportions were supposed to be (3 parts brown sugar, 1 part
milk, and a blob of butter cooked to soft ball stage and then whipped
after cooling to the point it was warm but not hot) I set out on a
culinary experiment.
I didn't have any Edradour, but I did have some Aberfeldy, and some
quick math told me that 3/4 of a teaspoon was about what I wanted.

And boy was I right.

I do have a Paypal account. And there's a series of steps for linking
that. But when I follow them, I end up back on eBay on the Paypal
Account page, but no linking has occurred. It's circular.

OT Computer stuff

2016-01-04 Thread WILSON MICHAEL
I have an Acer Aspire One netbook with an 8Gig SSD. Apart from being terribly
slow, the SSD appears to have failed. Looking around for a replacement, I
discovered the option of using a CF card with a CF/ZIF adaptor. More space,
less money = happy camper.

However after installation of a Sandisc 32Gig 266x and much rude language
due to non-functionality, I discover that the CF card needs to be DMA/UDMA
enabled and that, usually, only "industrial" grade cards provide this. Said
cards are, of course, only a whisker away, pricewise, from a new SSD.

However Transcend advertises CF cards that are "UDMA mode 7". Having been
bitten by advertising descriptions in the past, I'd like to ask if anyone knows
whether this description really allows the cards to be used as fixed discs?
Or... is there any way of enabling (U)DMA on the Sandisc?

Thanks, Paul, Rick, Ann and everyone else who threw in their 2 cents.

I still don't know which I prefer. I was thinking in colour when I took it but
I have to say the B worked way better than I expected. It is (as I think
Bruce said) a bit menacing where the colour is a bit whimsical.

To me it's like they're two different photos. No preference, I think they each
have something to say.

Thanks all for your input; it has been most valuable.

Pentax marketing: Really crappy sample images of Limited lenses

2016-01-04 Thread Darren Addy
I preface this by saying that if I had to choose between a company
that had crappy marketing and superb engineering vs a company that had
superb marketing and crappy engineering I would certainly take the
former... but I continue to be amazed at how poor the Ricoh/Pentax
marketing is. Case in point:

Here is a page with 4 Limited lenses. Take a look at the Sample Images
shown for each of the 4 lenses:
http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/japan/products/lens_cmp2/page04.html
(the link goes to the 70mm f/2.4, but you can change the URL to
page03, page02, page01 (or simply click the link for the other lenses
on the page). All are uniformly BLAH.

A better way to judge what a lens can do is to go to the Pentax Photo
Gallery and click the "Cameras and Lenses" link in the upper right
hand corner. Select the lens you want to look at (ignore the cameras,
unless you want to limit your search to a particular body) and click
the GO button.

The images of the lenses themselves on the page are gorgeous. The
sample images? Not so much.

Thanks Dan.

Had to stand there for about ten minutes for one of those damned gulls to be
the right distance away, going in the right direction and more or less where I
wanted it to be (I did crop a bit to get it "just right" LOL). They weren't
very cooperative that day.

Toronto has a few grand old theatres that have been spectacularly yet
tastefully renovated. I think the Elgin Winter Garden is the most beautiful of
them the interior is gorgeous as is the outside. They still have the original
ticket booth ( no longer used) out front and old-style incandescent lights
abound (as you can see above the stage door.

Thanks for the kind words; glad you enjoyed.

Thanks Mark. I think you caught what I was going for.

I actually was initially attracted by the door and posters, only as I was
framing that shot in the viewfinder did I notice the (apparently) homeless

One of the little stocking stuffer gifts my wife gave me for Christmas was

I decided I needed to try making this myself, so, remembering vaguely what
the proportions were supposed to be (3 parts brown sugar, 1 part milk, and a
blob of butter cooked to soft ball stage and then whipped after cooling to

I didn't have any Edradour, but I did have some Aberfeldy, and some quick

And boy was I right.

Re: OT - Lowepro Nova Sport 35L AW bag on great sale ($10 or less)

2016-01-04 Thread Darren Addy
My bag showed up today and I like it a lot. It is pretty roomy and
versatile for its size. For one thing, my laptop fits in its slot
PERFECTLY. Secondly, I like it for it's "8-pack" arrangement which can
store longer lenses (optionally with a body or two attached) and
larger external flash unit(s). My shorter lenses will probably remain
in my backpack bags. In addition it has a couple of pockets for
filters, ColorChecker, etc. It is even plenty tall enough for the
Bigma, with body attached (but hood must be reversed for storage).
All-in-all a handsome bag and a pretty good value even before the
rebate (IMHO).

Thanks again for passing along that link, Igor!

istD button battery cover?

2016-01-04 Thread Rick Womer
Good afternoon,

My daughter's istD has lost the screw-in cover for the button battery.

Does anyone have (1) the item, (2) a source for the item, or (3) an
idea for a substitute?

Cheers,

Rick
