[OSM-talk] KML tiles
Hello, the attached KML file links to a very rough proof-of-concept set of KML tiles of OSM road data. There's several issues remaining (more on that below). What do people think? Is this worth doing on a larger scale? Is it evil? Obviously, this shouldn't be used for mapping. The aim is to use the data -- for example, I like to measure distances of runs using Google Earth with OSM data (which requires tracks and footways, not roads). It should also be a good advertisement for OSM to the Google Earth community. Perhaps this approach would also be useful to the Marble guys for displaying vector data -- I hear Marble supports KML. The main issues at the moment are gaps at tile boundaries. This should be easy to fix using a better tile cutting method (osmosis' completeWays or the tile data server, once it's running). Furthermore, there's some network links missing between adjacent tiles which may cause problems when panning. The choice of tiling isn't useful for a 3d earth. Low zoom data should be simplified. Some ways disappear from the middle if you zoom in. It's too slow and not smooth enough. How it works: For each standard z/x/y-tile, cut out the relevant OSM- data and convert to KML using osmexport from osmlib, then massage the result to contain region information and links to the four subtiles. Hi, I have finally gotten around to uploading some of the Calgary Trails Project data... under the username 'catmp'. I made a slight mod the converter to remove attribution/RoadID on nodes within a way as this was making/will make cleaning up of traces difficult. I think there is a bug with the POLYGON stuff. At least roads larger than service -- unnamed service roads are very common. So much so that they shouldn't be in warnings at all. Do you have an example of a place with many unnamed roads? Here, in the city centre most public roads are named, some aren't and the buildings on them seem to get addresses at random from surrounding named roads... However... Each 'block' of about 1km x 0.5km typically contains a housing area, normally with a guard booth at entrances and normally with gates, even if, as is quite common in some areas, the gates are never closed... There can be as many as 8 entrances with roads running in various patterns through these areas providing access to the residences enclosed within... In many cases there are real through routes though traffic would be typically encouraged to follow the main roads around the area... Sometimes, one or two of the roads within one of these areas is named, many times none are named... I'd consider these to be residential roads within an urban gated community, I'm not sure if you consider them to be larger than service roads, but if so, this is a good example of nameless roads... d ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk
Re: [OSM-talk] empty relations
Hi, Ok, so it is basically (ab)using the only locationless entity available in OSM model to store some data, which _may_ be referenced by other relations. It is still not clear to me how could one reference it without having it retrieved in some bbox. You could retrieve it by id, by a search request through one of its tags, from a change file/planet dump, or you could not have retrieved it because you created it together with the object referencing it. Why not store the data about the company in that latter, second relation, and using this same relation to group all the roads operated by a particular company at the same time? Possible, but only for those cases where an entity exists only in one role globally, i.e. entity X only ever operates roads. If entity X was to take part in another role in another relation (e.g. it not only operates roads but it could also be the owner of a building or whatever) then your approach would duplicate information about X. Is it just a bad example or I misunderstood it somehow? Are there any other, meaningful uses? It is not a bad example and you understood it correctly. All this is highly theoretical anyway but at least there are these options and if someone comes up with some clever use for them then he has the freedom to do it. The feature is not used yet but why disable it if it doesn't hurt. We could just as well just deprecated segments, but decision was to ditch them completely. Now we find ourselves splitting ways into chunks no longer than a segment and gluing them together with relations (way has to be split whenever there is a bridge, speed limit change, bus or cycle route joins the way...). This might be a bit radical, but we could as well ditch ways and replace them with relations (of ordered nodes to compose ways). /thinking aloud We could do all sorts of things but this has nothing to do with your original question. But it doesn't make non-referenced relations with no members any more useful. Then don't use them. For instance, you can now pick up a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx, which has the newer high sensitivity receiver and can display OSM mapping (using mkgmap) for £140 including a 2GB micro SD card. That might still be twice the price of a basic non map logging setup and you may still be able to get cheaper prices outside the UK or by bidding for a non European model on ebay but it's still a big change in the market since Christmas. If you were thinking of dipping your toe in the OSM mapping game then it's probably never been better to do so. Hi, Now that the maps are complete enough in lots of places to use (as well as plenty still to do ;) ) I'm thinking of getting one of those Legends before I head up to Geordieland on Thur. So I was wondering if you could answer something for me. I only run Linux at home so it's important I can get every thing that is needed off it from there. So is everything, especially waypoints, stored in the gpx (so they can be read off the microSD card) or are some things stored locally on the device (and have to be read off using the garmin windows program)? The gpx files written to a micro SD card only contains the Active (and continuous) tracklog. A new gpx file is created for each day. Just the lat/lon, time and elevation are recorded in those. These could be just for interest, but also for direction finding, e.g. if you're out in the country and get lost, you can fire up the app on your phone and look at a (possibly annotated) photo of where you're supposed to be. Nick My 'mom' mobile app allows places and waypoints to have photos (and audio recordings) linked to them. It pastes in the centre of the screen so that you don't have to search for the thing you pasted (which might be anywhere in the area you're working in), on the basis that you're trying to create something based on something similar, and you will want it near where you're working. I wasn't envisaging it would be used to replicate a data set. Maybe there should be an option to move or copy to another layer in the same location? The more complex case, which I'm surprised hasn't been discussed at any point in this feature's development, is how I render a river with a polygon fill and a polyline riverbank (e.g. a dark blue line down each riverbank). Re: [OSM-talk-nl] Fietsnetwerk Veluwe

Ok, i'm trying this reply again as it didn't work the first time. This is exactly what I wish to believe. I'm not ranting on about how I want everyone to move to the forums to make me happy. I want a all-in-one communication solution for OpenStreetMap that satisfies the needs of everyone. But i can only see that as being a pipedream unless some programmers come along wanting to offer their services for such a solution. htmlDIV/DIV/html Date: Wed, 11 Jun 2008 20:20:09 +1000 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [talk-au] should we migrate to osm forum On Wed, Jun 11, 2008 at 7:40 PM, Luke Woolley [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:As a short-long term goal for the OpenStreetMap project, it is essental to have an efficient and welcoming means of communication. [Talk-de] highway=path in osmarender

Vielleicht. Kann man da mit dem Fahhrad fahren? Vielleicht. Kann man da laufen? Vielleicht.
