Compressing/Purging folder window

1999-12-10 Thread Oliver Sturm

Hi there,

Does anyone have a reason why that little window (appearing when I
select e.g. "Purge all folders") has to be _system_ modal? I
understand I can't continue working with The Bat! while those tasks
are performed, but I don't know why I have to be disturbed in using
other apps while that thing is visible.

If you don't know what I mean:

  1) Put some hundred mails to trash. Delete them from trash.
  2) Select Folder/Purge all folders.
  3) Open a "My Computer" window or whatever and try to continue
working. The little status window floats above all other windows
all the time, which is quite disturbing.

Thanks!

I agree with you, it shouldn't stay always-on-top.

Furthermore, the "cleaning up" (purging and compressing folders) takes
ages (sometimes 10-15 minutes). Does that have to be so slow?

The purpose of my message was not to imply otherwise.

The real purpose was based on my initial statement:

"You'll be able to configure shortcuts, not create your own."

The shortcut that you want is not yet implemented so you will not be
able to configure it as Thomas implied.

BTW: The auto-view is quick and easy - so why should I switch to
another mode? Where are the advantages?

You may browse more than one folder's messages at the same time.

You may use The Bat! across more than one desktops if you are using an
app that provides multiple desktop functionality.

The message list navigation shortcuts and toolbar buttons are provided
only in the 'View folder' window and are quite convenient.

I'm able to see more of the message listing via the main window
because message auto-view isn't occupying half the space.

Moving from the message list to the folder tree in the main window
involves tabbing once instead of twice with the message auto-view
window open. Worse if an attachment is in the message presently in
view, sometimes you have to press tab three times to get at the folder
tree.

After all that's said, it's all a matter of personal preference and
I'm glad that The Bat! offers the flexibility

Two missing functions

1999-12-10 Thread Andreas Stamm

Hi !

I'm missing two functions in The Bat!

1) I often send files via email and I would like that The Bat! will
automatically encrypt the files with PGP. Only the message text will
be encrypted, not the attaches itself

2) Sometimes I receive large mails and I don't want to download them
at the moment. But I want to know who has written the mail to me.
Before The Bat! i used PMMail from Southsoft and that programm was
able to download the first X (1-4000) lines of a message. I know The
Bat! can do that too, but after downloading the X lines the message
will be automatically deleted from the server.

Greetings and Thx - Andreas

The only solution I can think of: export all your folders to unix

either configure everything manually, or copy account.* files

You'll have to re-create that file manually... I'm not sure, but this

The Bat! - bug report

1999-12-10 Thread Paula Ford

Hello The Bat! developers,

I'm using The Bat! Version 1.38
  under Windows 95 4.0 Build 950
and would like to report a bug

  The bug description:

Closing Quick Search with "X" interferes with CTRL-Enter.

  Steps to reproduce the bug:

With focus on a message in the messages list of the main window,
press "f", which brings up the Quick Search window. Close the QS
window by clicking on the "X" in corner of window. Press
"Ctrl-Enter". A message window for replying does not open, but a
reply is generated and placed in the OutBox. This does not happen
when pressing "Escape" to close the Quick Search window.

Regards,
  Paula Ford

I ended up downloading 2 files from different sources, I think, but
anyway, one of the files was dated November 20something, the other
December 8. I installed the later one and it reports as version 1.38e. I
notice that some folks on the list have 1.38 without the 'e', so perhaps
that is the first 1.38 and should be updated.

However, unlike other *aholics Anonymous groups, we don't want to be

We don't??? Maybe some of us do.

If you don't want to be cured, what is the objective of your 12 steps?
12 steps to yet more and more e-mail?

Stay tuned.. We are working out the EM questionnaire and rating scale
(to determine the severity of your case) as well as the EM creed.

Sounds fun.

I'm missing two functions in The Bat!

 1) I often send files via email and I would like that The Bat! will
automatically encrypt the files with PGP.

This has been requested by others also.

Do you mean when using the Mail Dispatcher? If so, it doesn't delete the
messages if you uncheck the Delete option, at least not for me.

I cannot confirm this. I just tried it out. I have tried with message
auto-view and without. The behaviour is the same, wether I closed
quick-search by clicking on the top-right corner "X" or by hitting ESC
(but it makes a nice sound when I hit ESC). CRTL-Enter will open a
message reply in the deidtor window in both cases.

I don't know what they fixed between 1.38 and 1.38e, but 1.38e is the
latest version I know of.

Re[2]: Compressing/Purging folder window

1999-12-10 Thread Alexander Drunin

Hi all!

TF Furthermore, the "cleaning up" (purging and compressing folders) takes
TF ages (sometimes 10-15 minutes). Does that have to be so slow?

Even in case when some folder has just been compressed, deleting single message
and recompessing seems to be a function of a number of messages in the folder -
and I am afraid, not linear.

Well, it looks like a common scale-up problem for app' efficiency. We want to
introduce some functionality, so we implement it in a way that it works somehow,
not the best or fastest way -- but works. After customers've become outraged by
app's results in theirs particular conditions, much stronger than developer's
ones - developers start to think what to do.

It is normal for any software development process - but in the case of RIT we
have rather large quality assurance team - that list for releases and TBBETA for
betas (though releases often looks like GA).

Linux testing looks like that -- but it is a very different domain and bugs like
one described by Thomas are fixed faster, even if fix requires re-design.

Let's wait for TB! 2 - I wish TB! all the best!

I use SHIFT-F2 alot and it always sends only from the active account. I
tried it again just now with the same result. Are you using a DUN
connection and is TB dialing to make a connection before sending? Is
anything queued to be sent from other accounts?

No.
PF If so, it doesn't delete the messages if you uncheck the Delete option, at least

I mean a function where normal (short) mails are downloaded and
deleted automatically and for longer (more than X kb) mails then only
the first Y lines are downloaded and the message will keep on the
server. If I want to download it then, I have to switch that option
off.
I think it is faster than the dispatcher.
