Re: [CGUYS] electronics failures
Moving parts, OTOH, such as fans and disk drives, can be said to have x hours of life to them, and they will fail when they reach that point. Leaving a machine off overnight _will_ extend their lives. This is always an interesting question because both answers are correct. Turn-on causes failures and wear causes failures. Hence the best answer is in the middle. If you are not going to use a device for 8 to 10 hours, turn it off. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? [CGUYS] Lightning [Was: Speeding Up XP]
First of all, telephone loops aren't grounded. We were hit by lightning in 1998 and it fried all of the phones. There were burn marks coming out of the jacks, no kidding. When we recently remodeled I found a carbon block arrestor on my phone line. I replaced it with a solid state model for about $35. Somewhere I read about how far into the house the voltage spike will travel based on the clamping time of the arrestor. The electronic model limited it to just a few feet. The old arrestor let the surge travel over 100 feet -- not too useful. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Speeding Up XP [Was: Vista Memory Needs
Many years ago I witnessed a laboratory demonstration of the power of lightning. They rigged up a very high voltage spark (a shadow of a real lightning bolt) and had it jump to a block of wood. In an instant, the spark jumped and the block of wood was just gone. In that instant, all of the moisture in the wood was turned into steam, and the steam just shattered the wood into dust. Once an hour at the Franklin Institute. I wonder if they still do this? * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Could you refine that answer just a bit? When I sleep the various 'Books, for wear purposes, does sleep count as being turned off? I'm inclined to think it does, as it is my regular practice, but eagerly await your thoughts. Yes. Computers do now always wake from sleep or some parts wake while others don't. And if someone goes in and purposefully changes important settings, it can take days for someone else to find them. Heck, I'd as often recommend just reinstalling the OS (a couple hours) as I would spend hours and hours trying to figure out how they screwed it up. Even in a professional environment it is a hard call deciding to fix or format. In a consumer environment you must consider that once you charge for a fixed machine you are giving a guarantee that it is fixed. If it ain't you are on the hook to fix it even if the problem is something else. The cynic sez that all business have just one aim: Earn as much money as is possible. ...Hewlett-Packard realized that they were in the money business, and prospered. Does Hewlett-Packard still make instruments? I don't know, but I'll bet that they don't care, one way or the other. HP is an example of a company that went too far. In some ways, the hardware IS a bargain. I am willing to shell out $2k for a new TV. I have not yet done so, as I am unwilling to shell out $1.2 per year for programming, most of which I don't want, just to get the small amount that I do want. What I did not realize when I bought a new TV was that so much more programming was available on over-the-air HD than on SD. I now have more than three times more programming to chose from. Or you could just edit the registry to disable remote access as noted in the workaround section of the KB article. Takes about 2 minutes a server. Nah, better to panic. In my experience nothing will strike panic into the hearts of IT managers like the prospect of getting their big butts out of their chairs. Disable remote access you have got to be kidding. It won't be done. Anyone who relies on it getting done is asking for trouble. It is much safer to switch to a reliable DNS. Perhaps we need a way to cross check the results from multiple DNS servers? Re: [CGUYS] Toss You PC For Free Day (Sun in DC)
Very easy. Very sweet people. Yesterday's TV news reported long lines at the Carter Barron recycling site sponsored by DC. So we got to Freedom Plaza 45 minutes before the start. There was no line. We were immediately directed to pull over to the curb and they helped us unload directly to the curb and they sent us on our way. It is now just past 10:30 and I'm back here at my computer. It could not have been easier. YMMV. The woman who pullled over right after us was discarding an original Mac. A guy who was helping me unload reminisced that he had paid $2500 for his and I said I had too. P.S. I'm keeping my original Mac, but my 1st PC was gleefully discarded years ago. Re: [CGUYS] Savvy Senator? [Was: Email Security Contradictions
Blinded by ideology, Jeff ranted... No one is denying that Gore put through funding that, in retrospect, was well timed, but Gore saying the I took the initiative in creating the Internet is like George Westinghouse saying that he took the initiative in creating Emiril Lagasse. Al Gore and the Internet By Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf (Before Jeff demands to know who are these jerks?... Robert Kahn, invented the TCP protocol, and along with Vinton Cerf created the IP protocol. So the following is an account from people who were deeply involved with the Internet at the time these events happened.) Al Gore was the first political leader to recognize the importance of the Internet and to promote and support its development. As far back as the 1970s Congressman Gore promoted the idea of high speed telecommunications as an engine for both economic growth and the improvement of our educational system. He was the first elected official to grasp the potential of computer communications to have a broader impact than just improving the conduct of science and scholarship. Though easily forgotten now, at the time this was an unproven and controversial concept. Gore secured the passage of the High Performance Computing and Communications Act in 1991. This Gore Act supported the National Research and Education Network (NREN) initiative that became one of the major vehicles for the spread of the Internet beyond the field of computer science. As Vice President Gore promoted building the Internet both up and out, as well as releasing the Internet from the control of the government agencies that spawned it. Gore provided much-needed political support for the speedy privatization of the Internet when the time arrived for it to become a commercially-driven operation. No one in public life has been more intellectually engaged in helping to create the climate for a thriving Internet than the Vice President. Gore has been a clear champion of this effort, both in the councils of government and with the public at large. Re: [CGUYS] How do I compress MPG files
First thing to do is to frame the video to the size YouTube wants (320 x 240). If you have not already done this, it will make the file a lot smaller. Software, called a CODEC (COder-DECoder) does the compression. There are many different CODECs with different properties. The two basic types of CODEC produce eiter smaller files or better quality files. A transfer CODEC is used to make files that you use for editing (high quality). A delivery CODEC is used for making smaller files. Some CODECs are best for specific types of images (like animations). The H.264 (QuickTime Pro $29) and Sorenson (expensive) CODECs are good for making small video files. Other things you could do are reduce the frame rate or the data rate; or ask for fewer key frames; or reduce the color depth; or lower the quality setting (similar to making a smaller jpeg). Large files at YouTube are commonly posted in sets so you may want to break up the performance into several smaller units. While in Jerome,AZ I took some video of a band that I want to upload to YouTube. My MPG file is 500mb but Youtube limits you to 100 mb. How do I go about compressing the video so that it's small enough to upload? I'm on either an iMac G5 and I do have GarageBand if that worksor a MacBook Pro laptop. JPG's I could handle but I've never worked with video so haven't a clue. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Need advice on buying new desktop PC
I have a Dell E510 (a year old) that I'm very happy with. Dell's E520 seems to be a direct update of mine and I believe it has everything he wants (big HDD, lots of RAM, built-in networking card, CD/DVD-RW, [duo-core processing -- I recommended that because it's what I have] and a 19 flat panel monitor). His previous computer (before the laptop) was a Gateway so he asked me to check them -- and it seems Gateway has essentially the same machine (DX 430) as the Dell E520 -- but for $699 instead of $819. Why do you say laptop and 19 flat panel monitor? If the computer is being used as a desktop he could save $100s by getting a desktop. Dell has some great deals that include a 19 flat panel monitor. I have never heard anything good about Gateway computers. You need to strike a balance between price and durability. I would not go cheaper than the Dell. Though I seem to recall that Dell Laptops are a bit on the too cheap side too. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Read and weap (but heavens no politics!). The Best and Worst Internet Laws Date: Apr 20, 2007 By Eric Goldman. Over the past dozen years, the lure of regulating the Internet has proven irresistible to legislators. For example, in the 109th Congress, almost 1,100 introduced bills referenced the word Internet, and hundreds of Internet laws have been passed by Congress and the states. This legislative activity is now large enough to identify some winners and losers. When an authority in the field gives a first person account that contradicts one of your previous assertions and you immediately respond by attacking the credentials of that authority it is a bad sign. When the contortions required to maintain a certain belief become extreme it is time to reexamine the belief. Re: [CGUYS] Savvy Senator?
Umm, no, the original point was that Congress should not be trusted with anything to do with technology, since its record over the past decade or so is a sad and sorry tale. Did you forget that part already? I started this thread so you telling me what the original point was is a bit odd. No? My point was that I saw some movement in the direction of better understanding on the part of some Senators. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Or, in the Washington Times today... You are supposed to know that the Washington Times reports on the news of a fantasy Universe parallel to our own. I guess as the years go by it gets harder to remember that the paper was established by and continues to be owned by the Rev. Moon to promote a particular point of view. Any resemblance to reality is coincidental. (Sort of like some of the posts on this list.) The paper is designed to gradually warp the reader's percention of reality until they start to believe that they live in fantasyland. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? [CGUYS] Savvy Representatives? [Was: Savvy Senator?]
There are plenty of Senators and Representatives who are computer literate, a few of whom are more than novices, or at least members of their staff are. --- The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security is holding hearings on spyware attacks on government agencies. Apparently, the State Dept. was attacked in June 2006 by Chinese hackers who stole passwords and planted backdoor programs. Ans the Commerce Dept's Bureau of Industry and Security was hacked a month later. Members will understand that the penetrations on our systems were bad so bad that we don't even know whether we or the attackers now control our own systems, the briefing materials noted. --- I'm seeing good questions getting asked and a growing impatience with leaving this to IT management who seem too willing to make apologies for the defective software their computers run. It will be interesting to see what happens when a frustrated Congress tries to light a fire under these IT idiots. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? My first reaction was to use solar cells, but that could require wires. Can the solar cells be attached directly to the LEDs in ice, and still generate the tiny bit of power for the LED? Re: [CGUYS] Off topic-political
A few nights ago PBS ran a great program on Watergate 30 Years After. They interviewed many of the primary players looking at events from the perspective that 30 years provides. One of the interesting points was that those involved in the Nixon crimes were people of high personal virtue -- they didn't smoke, didn't drink, didn't chase the opposite sex, etc. But they had no morals when it came to the public sphere. There seemed to be no limits to what they would do to win a political battle. One reporter noted how those in the administration would just lie and lie and lie with absolutely no compunction. If caught in a lie they would just lie some more. They bribed, they bullied, they falesly prosecuted, they blackmailed, they burgled, they ruined people's lives. Watching the show I sadly noted that those were the good old days. It is worse today. As you see from the snippet below, you just can't engage Jeff in any serious discussion. Evil, stupid and/or ignorant, dishonest, sleazy indeed. And so very sad. He is a smart guy, but isn't willing to work with it. No, no Rev, you've got it all wrong. Your side is brilliant, honest, forthright, righteous, of the highest ethics and above reproach. The other side is evil, stupid and/or ignorant, dishonest, sleazy and always up to something no good. This discussion is not really off topic. This is an attempt to examine a decisionmaking process that is central to any discussion of how we use technology. It is key to thinking about DMCA, net neutrality, defective software security, false market statistics, etc. If we can't honestly examine the data, we can't honestly come to valid conclusions, and we can't effectively plot a future course. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Cleaning the Dust out of a PC
Every time I vacuum my carpet the plastic hose becomes charged with static electricity. Cat and dog hair cling to it and sometimes small scraps of paper. Now it could be the friction of the cleaning wand on the carpet fiber, Precisely what is happening. This is the classical method of creating static electricity. but anyone who doubts that plain old air movement can lead to static electricity buildup must have never seen a thunderstorm. Where do you think the lightning comes from, Thor's hammer? The theories all involve stuff that happens with ice or water molecules, not air molecules. It's so easy to avoid the possibility of damaging expensive electronics by blowing the dust out instead of sucking it, why take the risk? Because blowing makes an unnecessary mess. Re: [CGUYS] Cleaning the Dust out of a PC
There is no significant difference between blowing air and sucking air. However, people are used to vacuuming by *touching* the thing being vacuumed with the hose. People generally don't touch the hose blowing air to anything. It is undoubtedly touching or getting very close that would allow any static build-up to arc. Very good. Makes sense. But if both the vacuum cleaner and the computer are grounded I expect that static discharge will not happen. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Comparing Mac and PC laptops
Best to see what the professors are using. Ask what software they find the most valuable and make sure she can run that. My son, with a BFA and MFA in theater and a number of stage productions to his credit, is a Mac user and is convinced that all the best software for the stage runs on Macs. I also know someone with a daughter majoring in stage management (I think at UVA) and her school told her to buy a Mac. Cost wise, an Apple laptop and a good PC laptop will cost about the same. The iBook will be more durable because Apple designed it for the K-12 school market. The polycarbonate case is impact resistant. Laptops tend to break more quickly than desktops because of the way they are used. So get a service contract for the useful life of the computer (3 or 4 years, including the standard warrenty period). Having a contract will also get you better service at the Apple Store so check if there is one near school. This service can make a big difference in getting the most out of a computer. Daughter in college, studying stage management, decides she wants a laptop. Neither she nor dad owns one, and neither have owned a Mac. Both own desktop PCs with lots of software. Dad sends daughter his minimum recommended specifications for PC laptop, using Dell as an example. Daughter's friends tell her that Dell and Toshiba laptops are crap, the only thing to have is a Mac because it will do multi-tasking, runs so much faster than a PC, and it is so much more reliable than PC. Based on these comments, she thinks that she should get a Mac.
SSD is going to be expensive for a while. HHD is more interesting in the short term. With memory prices dropping the hard drive cache is increased to as much as 1 GB. This shouldn't add much to cost. Of course the data loss will be much worse when computers crash. First, you may want to wait to get that new laptop until later this year or early in 2008. There are a number of interesting new hardware features coming. One is called a solid-state drive, or SSD, which replaces the traditional hard disk with a faster drive made of memory chips like those used in digital cameras. Another is a hybrid hard drive, or HHD, which combines memory chips with a standard hard disk, for faster start-ups. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] How to Install Free Anti-Virus Offline
You're worrying too much. Just go download AVG or such and quit being so paranoid. As a Windows user you are going to have to adjust your anxiety levels. Just as if you had moved into a bad neighborhood, it would be impractical to lock yourself in and never venture out. Risk is the price of admission into the world of Windows. You need to learn the first names of the drug dealers and ladies of the night on the street corner and try to develop a friendly relationship. (I'm not going to ask why you did such a bone-headed thing in the first place.) First question is if you really need anti-virus software. If you do your web browsing with OS X and use the Mac version of Office you will eliminate most of the risk right there. The need to run Windows should be for a very narrow purpose, e.g. some custom-written software. You need to consider if this software offers any real virus exposure. If you use it in a confined way you may have no real problem. The biggest thing you need to worry about is not viruses, but invasions. Bad guys can reach through the Internet to take over a Windows computer. To protect against this you need to run the firewall that comes with Windows and you need a hardware firewall between your computer and the outside. Your Internet router may already be doing this (via NAT).
First of all I bought Vista for my MacBook because there is a specific bookkeeping program for my business that is only made for Windows that I'd like to use, because Netflix has a new on-line movie viewing option only available for Windows and because I anticipate similar situations occurring occasionally in the future. If you just stick to using the bookkeeping program you have very little exposure. You will probably find the Netflix on-line movie viewing option to be so pathetic that it will not be an exposure for long. So the threat vanishes. I don't have a router -- or rather I don't have a hardware router. My iMac's internal AirPort card functions as a software router, using Apple's Internet Sharing and Web Sharing. In other words I can get on line with my laptop by wirelessly sharing the Internet connection from my desktop, which is wired to the modem, sans extra hardware. Am I correct in assuming Apple's internal firewall won't function when the machine is running Windows? The laptop won't have Apple's firewall because you are not running OS X on it. The desktop will have Apple's firewall, but I don't think that firewall applies to a shared connection. If your desktop is providing NAT, then that if giving you basic firewall protection. This would suffice in most cases. Nevertheless, I would spend the $35 on a router or for a few dollars more get a WiFi router and simplify your network topology. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] What should one charge?
The thing that threw me about my client, though, was that she really didn't realize that there was an on switch. The computer was just always turned on. Fantastic confirmation of just how well the Macs do run. In contrast it would be a rare Windows user who did not know about BSOD, the three finger salute, anti-virus, anti-spyware, and patch Tuesday. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Scanner stats
Depends on the scanner. A $49 scanner is not durable. A $ scanner will probably last until it is technically obsolete. If you spend $ to buy 200 $49 scanners and discard one every month, they will outlast the one $ scanner. Has anyone done a study on the average life of a scanner? I know I tried finding similar stats on digital cameras awhile ago, but not much luck. I need to tell my supervisors when we can expect to get another scanner to replace the one that's out for repairs. I'm guessing maybe 5-7 years. This scanner is used every day in a normal 40-hour week, doing anywhere from 10-50 scans per day. At least 1/3 of the scans are hi-res (8x10 @ 600dpi, 30x40 @ 300dpi, etc.), if that makes a difference. tia. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? I could manage without Windows, but why not have it there, just in case? I used to do that, especially with books, but now books are obsolete and I'm gradually tossing them. When I toss an obsolete tech book that I never read that is a waste. Unlike books which are mostly not dangerous to have around (unless Homeland Security takes an interest in your reading habits), having Windows around can be potentially harmful. Would you keep a loaded shotgun at your front door, just in case? Some people would. The argument for not having Windows and not having that loaded gun is about the same. It could potentially hurt others. Both the gun and Windows owner will insist: I know what I'm doing. Yet the plague of shootings and the plague of malware would not exist if they were not around. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? It doesn't matter why he wants Windows on the Mac (he did tell us later on). It never occured to me to ask WHY he wanted to do it, I simply assumed that he had a need that the Mac was not able to meet on its own. The strident reactions remind me of a time when I was frequently telling people on a bus, airplane, waiting room, etc.: This is not a smoking area. Many were indignant that I was violating their rights. I am happy that times have changed. The point is that by using Windows you are harming me and I wish you would stop. The malware, spam, and security measures are becoming too much to bear. I should not be forced to build walls and hire guards just because you insist on running a crackhouse. Re: [CGUYS] Power Buttons
On many computers nowadays, push the button for less than 3-8 seconds (it varies by manufacturer) and it does one thing. Hold it in for longer and it will power off the computer. That longer press is to force the computer off. This puts open files and cached data at risk. Better to turn it off via software. That starts an orderly shutdown process. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] quickest way to learn CSS
I have always coded my webpages using a text editor, but now find I just can't keep up with everything, especially CSS. I will probably purchase Contribute which I think should be adequate for my needs - Contribute does CSS doesn't it? but I would also like to understand CSS better. Contribute does not do CSS in the way you mean. Contribute will let you apply an existing CSS to text, but it has no support for creating or editing a CSS. CSS syntax is so easy that I just use a text editor. I have programs, like Dreamweaver, that have a CSS editing function, but I find it to be more trouble than it is worth. Re: [CGUYS] how to get sound from tape into the computer
It sounds to me (no pun intended) that the line in on the card is somehow disabled, probably in software. Getting the sound working on a PC can be a long frustrating task. One thing is connected to another thing and then to another and any one thing set wrong in the chain can stop the sound. I would uncheck anything and everything that said mute and turn all the volume controls to high. (Take notes so you can put things back.) [CGUYS] Getting Answers [Was: Macintosh Question]
I find it very hard to find tech articles at apple.com, but when using Sherlock, it is VERY easy to find exactly what you need quickly. Strangely, I don't find that anybody's in-house search does as good a job as Google. But Google is not as effective as it used to be because so many hits now land on someone trying to sell you something. For a specific site the site:www.domain.com tag does a good job of filtering out extraneous matter. Does anybody here have their own effective methods? I wonder if Google's new Universal Search will make it harder to get the information we seek? * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? However, I could not find Power Macintosh 7800/180. Are sure it is not a Power Macintosh 7300/180? Here is the link to all older systems Correct. There is no such thing as a 7800/180. If the computer you are asking about is a desktop model it could be a 7200, 7300, 7500, or 7600. The 180 speed narrows it down to 7300. Use Apple Sysyem Profiler to confirm this. Re: [CGUYS] Comparing Mac and PC laptops
I copied each response and emailed them to her as well as the recent Consumer Reports article. Consumer Reports writers love to bad mouth the Mac. You have to dig into their charts to see that it is consistently top rated in virtually every category. The stats say one thing, the editorial copy says another. An untrustworthy source. Finally yesterday she made her decision: to get a MacBook Pro, and she says she loves it. She told me that the Mac seemed to be for people who didn't know anything about computers such as herself. (I have no opinion since I've never owned any laptop.) Also for people who know a lot about computers and know that computers don't have to be born defective. At this point, I don't know whether she got an extended warranty, how much SDRAM she got, nor what software came with the laptop. She bought it at a Mac store in Boston, MA. In case she bought 1 GB of memory, how beneficial would increasing to 2 GB be? The MacBook comes with a reasonable amount of RAM. Apple is not cutting corners. You should not have to add anything to a current model MacBook Pro. She says that she intends to use the laptop for everything pertaining to her study (stage management with a minor in television journalism), and to use her desktop PC for her hobbies, which include video editing but not gaming. The PC was built locally to my specifications. The MacBook comes with iMovie which is a great way to get started with video editing. As her needs grow she can buy FinalCut Express or maybe the professional (expensive) FinalCut lineup. Using a PC for video editing is a bad move. iMovie is surprising powerful. GarageBand is a great audio editor. iDVD is impressive too. All the iLife stuff comes with the Mac. Also, does the MacBook Pro come with an emulation program for Windows? If not, what is recommended (we have CDs with Windows ME, XP Home, 2000, and XP Pro available to install if needed). Stay away from this. Windows emulation is for hackers and those into pain. And you say she already has a PC so why bother? * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? None of the search tools could find exactly what I wanted quickly without having to muddle through a big list of irrelevant results. None of the tools could search the system without first using Safari [Location = file:///usr... etc.] to open some of the invisible folders and add to the sidebar, or using OnyX. Why would you be searching in invisible folders. The invisible folders are well structured so if you know what you are doing you should know exactly where the file you need resides. If you don't know that, then you probably don't know enough to be mucking with those files. I don't get what Safari (a web browser) has to do with any of this. Yes, EasyFind finds file names, but it's much slower than the others. It's so slow that it's like browsing on dialup. Not always. If a file is indexed then programs with pre-built indices will of course be faster. If you have no index or an indexing problem then EasyFind is much faster. Many who dislike the user interface of Spotlight or Google, do like EasyFind. Re: [CGUYS] PDF files in a Macintosh environment
I will not install the Adobe Acrobat reader on my OS X Mac because of issues with bloat and unnecessary ancillary files. If you are running OS X you have already lost the war against bloat. Adding a useful, though bloated, application is not going to make any significant difference. I have not seen any cases where adding Acrobat Reader has caused a problem. Re: [CGUYS] The Consequences of EULA Violation
Tom, I couldn't let this pass without comment: Please demonstrate. Buy some software, retail package or download, your choice. Start the installation. Decline the EULA. Return the product and try to get your money back. Let us know how that goes. This is a hot topic in the Linux community. Here is a recent article (Jan 2007) http://community.linux.com/community/07/01/03/227237.shtml?tid=12 Most of what is written on the topic is about getting a refund on the Windows part of a computer purchase when you can't decline getting Windows on the hard drive. This situation is a bit more difficult as some vendors insist you return the computer too and get a full refund. Getting a refund on the retail version of Windows should be easier, hence nobody is writing about it. In years past my office manager got a refund direct from Microsoft on an Office upgrade. We had already installed it. She hated it becasue it was so much slower than what she had been using. I told her it was futile to even try. She proudly told me it was easy. MS sent us a check. As I recall we didn't even have to return the software. They accepted her promise to discard it. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] PDF files in a Macintosh environment
Sometimes you have to open the file from withing the program instead of clicking on it to open. I've seen the problem a few times. The worst offender is when I receive a PDF in an email and it displays as an attached text file. I have to wait for the entire thing to load, then detach it to view in Preview. That is nor a problem with the PDF or Acrobat. That is a problem with your mail reader not interfacing correctly with display software. This is usually programmed as a plug-in. You may be missing a plug-in or have a out of date plug-in, or your mail reader may not handle plug-ins correctly.
I suspect that the header on the text PDF is nonstandard, rather than having a defective mail program, otherwise all PDFs would behave the same. Next time I have PDF that displays as text, I'll save it and see if I can compare the header with one that behaves better. Yes, incorrect MIME can be a big problem. Then the problem is with the sender's email program or computer. There is plenty of blame to spread around. If it is a MIME problem your only recourse is to save the file to disk and open it from there with a reader program. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? If we want to do something about unfair practices in the computer industry, we have to do something about the monopolistic corporations. It matters how you vote, and what kind of leadership we have in Washington. Yes. People who don't vote because it doesn't matter. People who vote for wingnuts because their mullah tells them how to vote. Legislators who abdicate their oversight responsibilities to an out of control executive. Media that don't do investigative reporting and only parrot press releases (like WMD). Media management that won't stand behind their investigative reporters (what happened to Dan Rather?). I requested a Preview-compatible version because Preview can save fill-in forms with contents, as opposed to Adobe Reader that prints but doesn't save the forms, and doesn't print to Preview either. Actually Acrobat Reader can do more. The creator of the form can set the PDF to email the responses back (just the responses, not the whole form). On return Acrobat will merge the responses back into the form. Easy. Very slick. Re: [CGUYS] The Consequences of EULA Violation
FYI, the IEEE requires me to assign anything that I publish in their journals (for me, a lot) to them or I don't get published in their journals. And it makes sense that IEEE does. IEEE's goal is to distribute what you write via a variety of means (using known and as yet unknown technologies) and I presume your motivation for writing is to have your work as widely distributed as possible. At the time they came up with this policy there was considerable discussion of what was the appropriate thing to do. IEEE typically loses money on its publications. IEEE's publishing goal is the dissemination of knowledge, not making a profit. Most of their publications have no advertising. With other publishers it is not so clear. For example there was a long writer's strike when the Washington Post tried something similar and the writers were justified in their objection. The Post wanted additional rights and did not want to pay an additional fee. (I don't recall how that dispute concluded.) * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? That is the reason to ONLY run windows software in Parallels. You make a clean install once set it up the way you want. Save that file as master. Copy the file master file. Now run the copy until it gets wonky and toss it. Copy the master file again and start over. No prolonged reinstall. You are not thinking about the new environment. What you describe would work in the old-style mode of operation where the software was autonomous. But Windows is no longer autonomous. Re: [CGUYS] Acrobat and Silverlight (was PDF files in a Macinto
I don't expect Silverlight to work any better than most of its other lackluster products, but I do expect to see them put extraordinary pressure on Adobe to replace good PDFs and animation with the usual M$ shoddy afterthought products. MS did get Adobe to give up its crown jewels, PostScript type, and adopt the problematical MS-developed Open Type format.
